RE: Big Truck to haul TH?

OK, so what do you have to do. I was thinking just buy it, register it, insure it, drive it. No biggy. What is the problem in registering it. I was just worried about if the hitch would work. I guess there is a whole new set of challenges. What are they? check out... http://www.jackdanmayer.com/

RE: Trading 5'th wheel

Remember when you trade, you are basically "GIVING" it to them.

RE: Big Truck to haul TH?

Question. I see a lot of used big rigs for sale cheap. Can say a Freightliner FLD 120 or any other 3 axel tow my gearbox. Someone told me needs to be a 2 axel due to the rear axel could hit the bottom/generator part of the trailer. Any experience?? What trucks to look for? They probably have over a million miles on them.

RE: keystone cougar fifth wheels

Same here. My last 5ver was a Cougar 309EFS. I upgraded the wheels & tires on it to 16". Search my posts. I had some problems with it, but the problems were really more with the dealer than the Cougar! At any rate I traded it on a Raptor. I wanted a TH to carry my motorcycle with me on trips. But I hate I got rid of the Cougar at this point. I wish I kept it. The dealer I traded it to had it sold the day I traded it.

RE: Time for a New TV

Let me put a spin on this one. If I had it to do all over again, I would have kept my 2000 F250 7.3!!! If you could find a 1999 or 2000/2001 F350 dually with one of the last 7.3 diesels, w/low miles, well taken care of and in excellent shape, my friend you will have a winner!!! Just think, less insurance, less money and truck that will do everything and more than your newer ford did, without all the problems. just my .02 worth...

RE: Made it official and changed profile

For a minute there I thought he was referring to running rear car tires on motorcycles. The dark side is what we refer to when running a car tire on a Goldwing... I thought I was on the wrong board...LOL

RE: Why do goosenecks use safety chains but fifth wheels don't?

That makes sense... You see a lot of Horse trailers and the sort with goosenecks.

RE: Why do goosenecks use safety chains but fifth wheels don't?

I've always wondered what the advantages of a gooseneck where over a fifth wheel other than the space required for the hitch. Are there any other advantages?

RE: Geico or Progressive insurance

Nationwide came in cheaper w/comparable coverages as Geico and Progressive. In fact, a whole lot cheaper. Interestingly enough my autos are insured by the Gecko. but not the 5ver. It really varies from State to state.

RE: Something for your RV that far exceeded your expectations?

2 1/2" memory foam mattress topper. I've been thinking about getting one of those. Does it really help? DW loves a firm mattress, but would like it to be softer.

How about a Fully automatic satellite dish. We picked up a Wingaurd carry-out last season and absolutely love it!

RE: 3 new toyhaulers from raptor " bumper pulls "

Yep, the smaller of the three would be for a 1/2ton tow vehicle. The other two would definitely need a 3/4, 1 ton respectively. But, knowing how these things will be marketed, I'm sure there will be a salesman out there who will assure a prospective buyer that he will have no problems whatso ever towing the 30ft model with his brand new F150.

RE: 3 new toyhaulers from raptor " bumper pulls "

30ft is too much for a bumper pull. I know a lot of people think they have freed up truck bed space with the bumper pull but a 30ft is going to have so much tongue weight you wont want to put much in the back of your bed by the time you are loaded up. Your much better off with a 5th wheel at those kind of lengths It really has a lot to do with where they put the axles and if they are tripple or double. I bet on the 30' model, they put the axles pretty much close to the center with that slide-out.

RE: Toy Hauler - Help the Wife (That Would Be Me)

Exciting position to be in. If you're keeping your current F-250 TV, then I would really focus on looking at Heartland Cyclones, or the Keystone Fuzion's. 3010 Cyclone and 302 or 322 Fuzion. Those trailers are all 35 ft in length, close to the max comfortable length/weight you'd want to tow with that truck, and are very, very nice interiors. The Cyclone is a bit more conservative IMO. The KZ's and Forrest Rivers are nice, but those are heavy pigs, and I wouldn't want to tow very often with those longer/heavier trailers with your TV. Now, as stated by 93mastercraft, our next setup will most likely be a 36' diesel pusher with an enclosed trailer. My current TV is a 3/4 ton chevy that I can tow as a toad without any add'l mods. Not sure if you can disconnect the driveline in the Fords (from factory) like I can my Chevy/GM, but if you can, consider just keeping that, and look at a DP with at least a Cummins ISC, or Cat C7, with Allison 3000. If you really wanna tempt yourself, go check out a Tiffin Phaeton or Allegro Bus. You could pick up one a couple years old used, for probably right around 100k and you'll never have "upgrade-itis" like 93mastercraft and many of us have :) As said, I love our setup, but once you drive a DP, you'll always be scheming to get into one as soon as possible! Manke, Nicely said! We'll have something to look forward to. I'll never see myself without an RV of any kind, and I'll never see myself without "camping" and enjoying going "RVing". If we keep this up, our little secret is going to get out!!!

RE: Newbie Needs Advice from Old Wise Ones

Thanks for all of the advice to date. After researching the 5th wheel models, it appears that they are out of my price range. We don't want to go into debt. I want to find something to meet my needs in the $15k range. Used is okay with me. If I can't go 5th wheel due to cost, is there anything that anyone can recommend? I have seen some nice Work and Play 28 models. They seem really sturdy, easy to load, and spacious. What do you guys think? Does anyone have experience with these trailers? Pros/Cons. Towing characteristics. DB versus BR model. etc. I will continue on with my search. BTW, what is the best place to look on-line for a used rv? There are tons of sites, but some really bite. Buying a toyhauler is like buying a nice house in a nice subdivision with a really nice garage and a bonus room above it. The only difference is the toy hauler will significantly depreciate to a certain level. However, that level is still higher than what you would pay for an RV without a "Garage". JM, here's a little history about how I ended up with the Raptor... I started out in a 24 ft TT for about $12,000 about 8 years ago. I kept it for 3 years. Sold it and went to a 35 ft, Fifth wheel that costed $30,000. I sold that one and got the Raptor I have now for 50K. Moral of the story, get what you want the first time and be done with it. Us "senior" RV'ers can testify to that. You Might get to the point where you will eventually down size. But I've made the mistake of continually up-sizing too many times...LOL.

RE: Newbie Needs Advice from Old Wise Ones

Well, Pictures are worth a thousand words... Here's my Raptor 361LEV. With your requirements, you will most likely need a BIGGER Truck. But you could allways scale back your requirements to keep the truck... http://inlinethumb61.webshots.com/42684/2995575790011772363S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/45577/2090701160011772363S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb48.webshots.com/45871/2659231490011772363S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb04.webshots.com/44931/2675608990011772363S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/46179/2726417080011772363S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb45.webshots.com/46444/2490003940011772363S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb58.webshots.com/46713/2046248870011772363S600x600Q85.jpg

RE: Your Rig

Brand new 5er. Only traveled from dealer to home so far. Trailer is winterized, waiting for Spring thaw to take her out. Waiting for the spring thaw! I Learned that the hard way. http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/rick83864/P1010001.jpg width=640 Interesting photo. One of two things worth noting here. The axles were dragging the ground on the ditch side or the front of the fiver is sitting on the right bed rail of the dodge. if not it was all very close. Tight spots like that are what us seasoned Fiver owners try to avoid. But I know sometimes it is hard to do! The hubs curb side where buried in mud, so yes the axles were almost dragging. Lucky for me the RV didn't rest on the rail. And that is the road leading to our new home so I can't get away from that tight spot!! LOL... Rick, I didn't know how you would respond, but you were "lucky" I can remember one time I had to pull of the road. It didn't look pretty and I didn't take a picture....:)
