RE: fifth wheel hitches

We use a garage ceiling mounted winch to lift ours out. The beam was specifically reinforced when we built the garage. We pull the truck away and then lower the hitch onto a 4 wheeled dolly and push it into a corner. We need the truck bed for too many other things to leave it in for any long length of time.

Where to Jack?

We need to jack our rig to grease the axles. Our manual says to jack at the shackles in front or rear of the tires. However because they are in the lowest position, this is not a secure place to jack because the spring eyelet extends below the shackle.
(I can not get the included photo to display as this site wants a url instead of just inserting the photo. HELP!!!)

RE: Where to Put Your Laptops when Moving?

Hi Everyone
Thank you for all the insightful replies.
We use our laptops a lot. We regularly exceeded the 5 gig limit on our Verizon air card. (Fortunately we have the old unlimited plan, but we often get throttled). We do trip planning, reservations, email, WEATHER (we seem to be tornado magnets) and trip photo updates on a daily basis. All our music is also computerized. We have even bought a dedicated wireless printer for the rig.
The 2 of us discussed things after reading all your solutions, and stopped to consider exactly what we want. It came down to the following items:
1. Safety/security (protection) - In other words damage prevention from shock and falling. Possibly theft as well.
2. Ease of use
a. removal to take with us away from the rig
b. installation when setting things up or taking them down. (getting to the AC plugs under the table is a major pain with the wife's back and my knees.
3. How does it look? - the wife thinks our (my) currently solutions look like an electrician's nightmare. Change is in the air.
4. Performance - the air card works best when it is not shielded by the the metal frame of our rig (a fifth wheel).
Last years solutions resulted in a near disaster. While returning from Alaska we had to jam on the brakes when hitting a frost heave sending the rear dinet seat cushion and my laptop on to the floor. Fortunately it was more of a slide than a crash. But the lesson was learned. No more rear seat storage.

Where to Put Your Laptops when Moving?

The wife and I have tried several ways to handle our "tech toys" when we "move on". We have yet to find a satisfactory answer as to where to put 2 laptops, a Cradlepoint Router, and an air card. All have dc power cords as well as cables for data. It all can get to be quite a tangle and assembling and disassembling it all every time we move can get to be a drag. Insulating them from the bumps and shocks of moving is also an issue. We normally use the kitchen table as a "desk" but we dare not leave them setting there when we move.
Thoughts and Suggestions?

RE: 101 N. From San Francisco

Let me clear up some confusion here....First, Roseville is nowhere near 101, I think DaveG39 may have meant Santa Rosa?
Second, the freeway goes AROUND Ukiah and not through it.....I think BillandCarole may have meant Willits instead of Ukiah.
Main Street is 101 in Willits and there are 5 stop lights....If you do the posted speed limit, not over not under, you should hit most of them green....I usually do.
The rest of your trip should be smooth sailing...Have fun!
BTW....I grew up in Willits and they have been talking about a bypass for over 35 years....Hasn't happened yet!
You are absolutely right on the incorrect identification of the town name. Sorry About that.
We wish we had you luck with the lights. We always seem to arrive in Willits right about "rush" hour and have to grind it out. We leave home, take 12 (Jamison Canyon RD toward Sonoma and then the Sonoma Highway to Santa Rosa or go to Petaluma on Stage Gulch Rd. From Vacaville this takes about 3 hours which means we arrive about lunch time. Both can get complicated if you do not have a GOOD GPS.

RE: 101 N. From San Francisco

Being from the area (Vacaville) I would urge you to get on 101 at or north of Santa Rosa/Petaluma. The traffic below this area is a huge nightmare for larger RV's and often for the commuter. And with the bridge tolls going to the moon in the near future ($5 an axle currently proposed) it can get dammed expensive quickly as well. At the peak commute times (5am to 9, and 3 to 7pm), it is normally bumper to bumper stop and go, below Santa Rosa on south. When its not they drive like kamikaze's, rain, fog, or shine. Getting on from 12 or 29 north is a much more relaxed approach.
North of Santa Rosa is open, scenic, and 2 or 4 lanes until Ukiah. The highway runs right through the middle of town and we normally hit every light and there are a good half dozen. They have been talking of a bypass for years, but as of yet it has not been constructed as far as we know.
Hope this helps

RE: Quartzsite in the rain?

Hay, it's the desert, how much rain can it get? . lol
If you park in the wrong place or if the storm door opens real wide, a lot more than most of us want or can deal with....

Quartzite Weather

The wife and I have had to postpone our trip to Quartzite due to us both have some rather nasty colds (flu?). Were finally on the mend and are wondering how things are going on down there, with all the storms moving through Cal. We've had 5 inches of rain in the last few days and with the fronts being so widely spread, are wondering how the southern deserts are doing.
Thanks

RE: Missing Microsoft Word history

Hi
Do a full hard drive search of your C drive. In the search box type in
*.doc
This will search all of the files and folders for word documents, assuming that you are not using the newest version of word. In this case you would type in
*.docx
This should give you all the word documents on the hard drive.
Good Hunting

RE: Greasing Lippert Axles

Dexter specs for grease...
Thicker Type - Lithium Complex
Dropping point - 419 deg F minimum
Consistency - NLGI No. 2
Additives - EP, Corrosion and Oxidation Inhibitors ( water repellent, oxidation & rust inhibited, extreme pressure )
Viscosity Index - 80 Minimum
The manual says :
pump grease into the zerk. The old displaced grease will begin to flow back out the cap around the grease gun nozzle... when the new clean grease is observed, remove the grease gun... rotate hub or drum when adding grease.
Is it really necessary to spin the wheels when doing this?
Thanks

Click here and see what Lippert says:

Downloaded, read, and saved. Now to put the "theory" into practice.
Thanks for you time and effort.

It is time to grease our Lippert axles. I have the grease gun but am not sure which grease to use or how much grease to pump in. Can someone give me some pointers.

RE: Residency plans

Look for a lot of politically, morally correct heat here. We have already retired and are awaiting the next avalanche of new Taxifornia surcharges fees and taxes. RV and other vehicle fees just doubled. Sales taxes are now nearing 10% and I can't count the number of fees that have increased. And they are still 20 plus billion in the hole, and counting. Got to keep all those who sponge off the state well fed, housed, and happy, not to mention all the special "interests" well cushioned pensions flowing. Many are getting 110% of their salaraies in the last year before retirement. They make more retired than working!!!
Moving is become an only too necessary requirement. The budget is a bottomless black hole. We are off to the lawyers after the turn of the year as we do not want to give up our permanent home of 30 plus years. But we are out of state more than 6 months a year as it is. The legal implications of renting our home need to be explored.

RE: Where are you guys putting your gennys when in use?

Any good ideas on how to secure the genset to the truck bed? I am struggling with how to do it on our Honda 2000. "Stealth" installations are appealing and we have seen some very innovative ones. However space is limited as we tow a 5th whl with a 6.5 ft bed.

RE: Where are you guys putting your gennys when in use?

We have ran our generator on both the back of the truck and in back of our 5th wheel. The back of the truck is most secure, quieter, and less prone (emphasis on less) to getting fumes into the rig during the summer when the windows are open. However they are harder to refuel and start. You also have to make sure that the exhaust remains clear of anything that can be damaged by the heat.
We had our side panel stolen off ours last summer and well understand the security issues. Generators were a "hot item" last summer in southern Oregon. We lost only our side panel. 3 Others lost the whole gen set, and they were all chained/cabled down. One was a Honda 3000 and you know how heavy they are. And it was taken in broad daylight.
