Ode To A Debate - Can We Discuss Their Value?

"Here is how I see it... Someone comes on these forums and says they bought trailer X and are going to pull it with truck Y. Or worse yet they ask if they can pull trailer X with truck Y. At that point 14 weight police jump in and state that if you load trailer X to its capacity and fill truck Y up with wives, kids, fuel, etc. that the weights exceed whatever is posted in the door jamb and one of the following is going to happen: a) you will be "caught" in some jurisdiction and fined b) you will cause an accident and be sued for all your worth c) your truck will fail and you will be sorry. The problem is that when one asks the weight police for examples of a,b or c they can't produce them. At that point they roboticly revert to doing calculations involving the door sticker and repeat consequences a,b and c. Even though we don't have any examples of a,b and c. If one asks said weight police what they drive/pull, one will inevitably find they drive truck Y+1 or Y+2 and that when they previously owned truck Y it was totally inadequate. The argument gets worse when one starts to analyze what the differences are between truck Y and Y+1. A new type of person emerges which I will call the door sticker police. Sticker police maintain that no matter what is done to a truck it is rated by its sticker. The sticker is God. It doesn't answer to common sense, it doesn't understand physics, it just is. It is to be worshiped, obeyed and revered. The sticker is all knowing. It applies to all loads, to all situations and to every truck. Thus if one compares truck Y with truck Y+1 at the parts level, upgrading the parts in truck Y does not make it as capable as truck Y+1. Why ? Because ! Somebody put a sticker on truck Y and that is what it is, period. To them you can't make truck Y into truck Y+1. You have to buy a Y+1 truck to have a Y+1 truck. Because they said so. Period. End of story. And according to the sticker police, if you upgrade truck Y to truck Y+1 you will not only suffer consequences a,b and c, but you are a fool. And again when we ask the sticker police for example of this they can't produce any. And when we try to reason with them they revert back to worshiping the sticker. Thus there are those of us that believe in science and there are those of us that believe in the sticker. Peace to all." I think that the thread that ended on this note is awesome! I love these. It causes folks to do research and get answers and it brings outs great and opposing opinions. I just wanted to say THANKS TO ALL and didn't have a chance. Believe it or not, these help folks. It's like the market, nobody knows if it is going to go up or down for sure, but it helps build a great base knowledge for better decision-making. Oh, and they're funny to boot! Please feel free to move or close. I've gotten to say thanks in the forum where it began.

RE: Have any of you burned out on RVing?

I don't understand. You mentioned that you liked it for 2 years. I feel like there's something else going on with you two. Maybe you need to reconnect and bring some romance back in your lives. Afterward, talk to each other about what types of escapes/vacations you like to do together. An RV can be a means to an end. Do the things you have always enjoyed at first and most of the time. If an RV fits in that arena, the go for it. I feel that if things are ok between the two of you, then those few days of compromise, to the things the other likes to do, are much more tolerable. Also, the upkeep of your mode of enjoyment (RV, Car, Truck, etc.) is also easily tolerable. Now, with driving, backing, swimming, heights, and other phobias, practice and time should cure, but if not, downsize, beef up, safetyize, or just whatever would make you feel better about it. My thoughts are that the RV, truck, MH, etc. aren't the majority of the enjoyment, it's the lifestyle or places you can enjoy with them--a means to an end. It doesn't have to be an RV, it could be anything or any version of that that brings you happiness together. So, my question is: Are you two in a good place? Explore the circumstances more and be honest with each other.

RE: Undersized tow vehicles

Just remember this, the only thing you can tow according to some weight police is a Pop up by a Kenworth. :B

RE: Air bag question on F150

Equal-i-zer is a brand name. The proper technical term is "WDH" or "WD hitch" or "weight distributing hitch." Using the proper technical term will help avoid confusion. If you can't get the truck level with the WD bars, you've got WAY more than 775lbs on the tongue. I own a very accurate tongue scale so I am right on the money on that 775. I guess if I had spelled it Equal-i-zer I could see how someone could been confused as to what brand I had. My very first Draw Tite (that's a brand name) hitch was listed as a "equalizer hitch". Not a fancy term like your WD or Weight distribution hitch. Since it seems so very important to some of you HOW I spell and harping on a newbie on my spelling I'll just move on. This I don't need. I was asking for specific answers and for some of you, it's more important to be a wordsmith. To those of you who were helpful, thank you. Don't let none of these blokes run you off. Their opinions aren't any greater than anyone else's! I'm glad to see another Arkansan. Where from?

RE: 3500 SRW or 3500 DRW

Hey wp6529, just curious...how many years have you been driving a dually? :B Since May 1997. :R So it really isn't 13 years yet..........LMAO I don't want to brag, but I've been driving "duallies" since 1973!!! Awesome guys. I love it. What a great conclusion and I appreciate the Mods allowing it to hit the bottom. See, lessons learned, opinions stated, and I had a good laugh.

RE: 3500 SRW or 3500 DRW

Funny. Who is everyone arguing with? I think the point has been made that the DRW is better for the trailer he's looking at. There appears to be some really angry folks out there. Personally, I don't have a problem with differing folks having differing opinions. It's what makes this thing called life so great. But, I find it humorous when folks are convicted to know better. And, if I may for those folks who make an abrupt comment to OPs about a question being asked over and over, let it go and just let someone else answer. Do you really enjoy the thought of someone else thinking you're a jerk? Off my soapbox for the "angry ones".

RE: 3500 SRW or 3500 DRW

OK, wp6529. My points are all wrong and yours are 100% right. The OP says he is going to be "used for around town and towing with more around town than towing", so running solo is going to be the majority of his use, like it is for me (and most of us). I've had SRW and DRW trucks. I will let him decide if my points are worth considering. I, and several others have decided a dually is expensive and not always needed. I won't resort to personal attacks. I will just state the facts and let the OP decide for himself. The newer SRW trucks are a lot more stable than they were even 5 years ago, due mostly to increased tire capacities. You should try a SRW truck sometime. You might like it. I have made my decision after owning both. I will let the OP make his own decision. Believe it or not, people can disagree with me (or you) and it's not a big deal. Checking pressures on either tire on a DRW is more difficult, since the valve stems both face the space between the wheels. If you think it only affects the inner tire, you don't have much DRW experience. By the way, I have had a chauffers license, until they became a CDL several years ago, for over 36 years. I have driven Class 7 & 8 trucks all my adult life, so I do have a little experience with duals, maybe even more than you.... I tend to agree with you and support the SRW, but shorter wheel base. It is definitely easier and more pleasurable to drive over a DRW (for me). And, I've had both. But I believe the OP is well beyond the capacity of a SRW. ...at least stock.

RE: CW Unwilling to Honor Advertised Price

Interesting, but the ad is not a Camping World ad. It is an ad by the manufacturer, Ultra-Fab Products, Elkhart, IN. IMHO, CW has been falsely accused. Really????? :h

RE: Fishing license

Is there any one site "connecting" to all states with rates/prices, etc? I don't mind paying a nominal fee to enjoy that state's assets. If it's too expensive, I'll move on.

RE: Here's a thought!

In summarizing all the post on this subject I have learned: If you are approached in your MH by a intruder and are planning on using wasp spray to defend your self: 1. ask him to put his cigarette out, 2. ask him to open the windows of the Mh for ventilation, and 3. get him to sign a disclaimer so you won't be held responsible :h Excellent post.

RE: U S Forest Service cancelling Golden Age discounts

When you go to the polls and vote, if the name has "incumbent" beside it, vote for someone else. The situation will be straightened out in 4 yrs. peaches&cream sadly this will be of little help. The issue has to do with past actions and are not issues that can be corrected with future government actions... Peaches & Cream is 100% correct. We as a nation made the mess and we need to take action to correct. And, we will. It's cyclical. Have faith and patience and vote to balance the madness. It's not about this pres or the previous one nor is it about one party over another. It's about you and me putting responsible folks forward to lead us when we stray AND WE HAVE. Of course we can correct all of it! We have always pushed through our issues. When we are "prosperous" again, the bennies will return and I can get back my ATB Access 50% back! Let me get you started: Vote 1 if you agree with this message... Vote 2 if you don't... LOL.

The Best Ones Get Away

Why are the best threads closed? Ok, rhetorical. But, they are often the most interesting to me. I get many good laughs from them. I just finished a thread that closed and I could have enjoyed it playing out a bit longer. People say the darnedest things and often sadly, they are uncompromising in their beliefs. I found myself in a couple angles, but I've decided to not be a victim to them any longer. So, for the "regulars", thanks and could you PM the moderators to keep the threads open just a bit longer. It's when they get their best. Oh, don't get me wrong, the RVing stuff is great, but searches and directions to search are killing some of the back-and-forth. So, I say, let the opinions continue! There's room for both.

RE: Definition of "Full Timing"

It seems like there is a good bit of interest in trying to define Full Timing, so I thought I'd get the ball rolling. To those of us not yet FT'ers, I admit that our perception of FT'ing would tend to be that of an "endless vacation", because vacations are all we've ever known! Now, I will temper that by saying that I know that I can't *spend* like I'm on a short vacation. For many, "vacation" often equals "splurge". So I know that I have to spend within my budget, and watch it carefully. But doesn't FT'ing include other vacation-like attributes, like looking forward to attractions; everything from museums to Disneyland? And the fun of being on the highway heading to new and unexplored places? And meeting new folks around a campfire? I guess I know that FT'ing will eventually settle down into a routine, a pattern, as life always does, even with its monotonous aspects. But, I would kind of like to think of our 5-year FT'ing plans as, yes, a 5-year vacation! So, in what ways is FT'ing *not* like a vacation? Go ahead...I dare you...ground me in reality! :) dave I can understand where you're coming from. Most fulltimers think of of themselves as simply living in the RV as a home. And, of course, there are as many differing opinions as S&B. I had the same perception of the term "fulltimer" at first too. Ask "Part-timers" about how they RV and you'll likely get similar answers to what you're thinking. They USUALLY get in the RV for some recreational purpose and return to a S&B. The exception may be some version of snowbirders although I'd argue that snowbirding, for S&B owners, is also a form of vacation (relief). Even the acronym "RV" def has modified to include basically a place of residence, and IMO, it's a shame as the term has "recreation" in it. Personally, I call what you describe as RV traveling, RV vacationing, or part-timing. What I wish, at times, is that there were terms that further defined sub-groups of RVers so that it would be easier to find like-minded folks. Just remember, as alluded to earlier in this thread, it's whatever you define it. And, you can define it as you wish. No one owns the term. It's just opinion. Put it on paper, put it on a t-shirt, stamp it on the RV in bold letters. You have that right. To me, if you live in your RV for any extended time, you are full-timing whether you have a S&B or an exit plan. 5 years? Heck yeah, you are fulltiming! Oh, you shouldn't dare many of these folks. Some are quite opinionated! Enjoy and thanks for keeping the reading interesting.

Quality Replacement Parts

Hi TC folks. Chose this forum vs TV on purpose. You guys lift the weight and work with the weight. I've got a lifted truck I want to put back to stock height. I bought it lifted. I have the opportunity to add some upgraded parts in the process and would love your opinions on quality, strength, and performance. If you want to comment please do. Am considering shocks, springs, airbags, sway bars, pitman arm, nylon bushings, etc. About the only thing I've come close to firming are Bilstein shocks and Hellwig sway bars. Am ignorant of the better quality products really and understand there will be differing opinions. Opinions of those who've actually used the products is greatly appreciated. When complete, my intention is to have a stronger, smoother, and safer ride. I have an 08 F250SD diesel. Thanks!

RE: Non-resident Fishing License

"They don't owe us anything!" Sorry to disagree with you .... but yes we all do. (I'm a four year service Air Force vet who didn't even enter a combat zone, so "they" indeed don't owe me anything.) In your case, you are owed plenty by the rest of us who lounged around in luxury here in the continental US while you, I'm guessing, were doing something else when you were serving. One of the many things you are owed is the puny little goody of free or near-free fishing thoughout the US during at least your retirement years. "They" can increase my taxes if required to provide you with this perk. He was correct. You can't decide what everyone owes us vets. I respect your feelings towards the matter and even appreciate it, but for the most part, the government takes care of us. If you want to donate, please do, but these are state matters.

RE: Whats up with the Heartland RV company????

...Bottom line is they only care about the money... Every business is about the money. It's always about the money. You and I are about the money. Only the approach differs--quality, cheap, quantity, etc. It's totally ok to be about the mnoney as money is a tool. It is the medium of life. But, don't be a douche in how you get it either. If you take from me, you're a douche and I'm coming after you because you are STEALING.
