RE: Mice

I keep a box on decon in the basement of the fiver for a preventive measure. That way if Mickey gets in, he doesn’t last long enough to invite Minnie, Pluto, etc.

RE: Tire condition Examples

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f269/Cox89XJ/DSCF0103.jpg This failed ST tire still had 65 psi in it. This was the fifth tire that failed. One was a blow out. The others were caught in time and looked similair to this. After changing to 16 inch wheels and LT225/75R/16E rated tires, I've had no more tire problems.

RE: Louisiana campground showers

We always use our own RV shower and bathroom. If we had to use the campground facilities we would stay in a motel.

RE: Have any of you burned out on RVing?

We started out tent camping and enjoyed it through the years. WE bought a fifth wheel in August of 03 and have enjoyed it. Traded for a rear living room fifth and enjoy it more, but to say that we’ll never burn out. Well I learned a long time ago to never say never.

RE: new vs used

I bought one new one and kept it for three years, then I traded for one that was a year old. If you are careful buying used I think that’s the least expensive way to go.

RE: Tire changing Question

I now carry a hydraulic 12 ton bottle jack, but my Chevy truck screw type bottle jack has worked in the past. I also carry a four way lug wrench.

RE: Why is everyone leaving so early?

We just got back from a 5 day cruise that left out of Tampa. On the way down from TN we meet sevaral snow bird rigs headed north, but on the way back to TN we meet several, what looked liked snow birds rigs headed south. We will be in the snow bird class in 2 years. I agree with one of the above post about people wanting to get back home to family and loved ones, also a bigger house. When we do snow bird in a couple of years, it will be hard to be away from grandkids for 3 months. Maybe we'll try one month at a time??

RE: Anyone ever try to claim on GM warranty in Mexico

I have a 03 and my oil pressure gauge quit working. The truck had 52 thousand miles on it at the time. They replaced the whole thing speedometer, gauges and all. It cost me $409 US dollars. About 4 month later I received a check in the mail from GM saying they had a defective part and there was a recall. I know this is not your same situation, but I would get it documented. Maybe just maybe it’s covered on a recall. More than likely the parts come from Mexico anyway. Here in TN they sent the old speedometer and gauges to Nashville and a certified shop had to reset all the correct mileage. Maybe in Mexico you won't have to do all that. Just think, new truck. :)

RE: World Clock

Why is the earth turning the wrong direction? If it was turning that way the sun would rise in the west and set in the East. That's a view from the space shuttle :)

RE: Atwood Furance Problem

The only problem I've had with the DC panel was a loose fitting fuse. Sometimes you can wiggle the fuse while your furnace is on to see it any of the lights get brighter. I was able to fix a loose fitting fuse by removing the fuse and very carefully squeezing the fuse terminal with needle nose pliers to make the fuse fit tighter. Deewayne gave some good advise also.

RE: I need a good, loud horn.

I wish someone would post a link to a really good loud electric horn. My wife delivers mail and some things require a signature. This is a rural area and some of the people have big dogs. Long story short, she needs a loud horn. Louder the better.

RE: Bunk Houses; Yay or Nay?

We bought a BH back in August of 03 by listening to our grandchildren and SIL. The grandkids would seldom go with us and when they did they would not sleep in the bunks, they would sleep on the dinette table that made a bed. When watching TV the couch was to close and you had to keep your head turned at an angle in order to see it. I’ve seen some bunk house layouts that I liked since then. Anyway we traded for a rear living room in 07. Wish we had bought the rear living room in 03.

RE: Any Long trips WITHOUT tire blowouts

7,000 miles with Chinese tires and 5 failures, one of those was a blowout. Changed from a 15 inch to a 16 inch B F Goodrich Commercial TA's and towed approx. 9,000 miles, with no problems. I'm guilty of running between 65 up to 70 while towing though. Still drive the same way with no issues now. My son works at a feed mill and I keep my rig weighed, so I know it's not over weight and I've always kept a close watch on the tire pressures. Checking the tires visually every time we stop is the reason for only one blowout, because I caught the tires bulging before they blew. You said your rig weighs around 7500 loaded so you will probably be okay with the Demans. BTW I only live about 20 miles or so north east on you in Huntland.

RE: Broken Rear Spring Hanger

Replace the hanger. The old one will have to be cut off and the new one welded in it’s place. I would not try to repair the broke one.

RE: Silverado 2500 6.0L

I have a 03 Chevy with the 6.0 and tow a Cougar that weighs 10,500. It does okay. Sometimes I wish I had a diesel, but when not pulling I’m glad it’s a gas. I get anywhere between 8.0 and 9.0 while towing. The new 6.0’s have more power and a six speed transmission and suppose to do a better job towing than what I have.

RE: broke wheel lug studs

How many of us through the years went to remove a lug nut that was put on at a shop and the lug nut would pop when it loosened because of being so tight? The shops in this part of the country have only been using torque wrenches in the last 25 years or so. They used to tighten them with an impact wrench and never recheck the torque. One of the things I used to do when getting home after having new tires put on was to loosen the lugs and re-tighten them so I didn’t get any surprises out on the side of the road. I don’t carry my torque wrench with me all the time when on the road. What I use when on the road is a four way lug wrench.

RE: broke wheel lug studs

dryfly: Keep a check on the lugs that were replaced. When checking torque after the first trip, I was able to tighten the lug that was replaced. So I guess it was not seated completely when I installed it? I don't apply anti-seize on my truck because the lugs are made or coated with a material that doesn't rust, but my RV studs were rusted. You will probably be able to go several years without applying anti-seize again. Especially with a closed capped lug. I think you made a wise decision. As the old song goes, some people "Can't see the forest for the trees". Like one of the posters posted above, this is not rocket science. I wonder how we all got by before all of us got torque wrenches??

RE: ....are you content............?

Content? I have every reason to be content and should be. I think my darling wife and I are healthy and we are blessed with two healthy children that now have children of their own. I catch myself looking forward to retirement in about 2 years and 7 months down the road. I’ve always been the type to try to smell the roses a little as we go. I remember when I was about 35 years old an older gentleman that I worked with was having a retirement party. He was so tight with his money he would not take vacation time being afraid he would miss some overtime. He said he always wanted to go out west on vacation, but now being financially able, he didn’t feel like it. He said if he had it to do over he would smell the roses a little more as he went. I’ve tried to learn from his mistake. There are so many things that I think needs to be done, so I just can’t classify myself as content. I wish I could.

RE: Rain leaking in camper

Always make sure your slides or either all the way out, or all the way in. I saw a camper one time that had a floor rotted due to a hydraulic slide leaking or drifting open. The seals around the edge will not seal if not fully open or fully closed. Also, if you open a slide go all the way open with it. Same way with closing. You don’t want the rubber seals to get folded in the wrong position and not seal. We have a camper with two slides in the rear and when we have it stored in our building it is tempting to open a slide just a little to make it easier to get to the rear cabinets. This will not work for a camper stored outside.
