RE: Where to get best price on aluminum wheels?????

I bought my 16's and LT tires at www.trailertiresandwheels.com. Talk with Scott. He is very knowledgeable. Got a fair price and very quick delivery.

RE: P3

I asked the tech support guys at Tekonsha what the current drain was when the unit was in sleep mode. I do not remember the number but it was a few mAs and my quick calc showed it would take several months, assuming that the TV battery was not charged, before it would make an impact on the TV battery.

RE: Ga.to Mystic Conn. Places not to miss

We visited Mistic a few times and enjoyed: In Groton at the Avery Point Campus of UConn you can take a cruise out the the haunted New London Lighthouse. http://www.oceanology.org/lighthouse.html and Abbott's Lobster in the Rough for a fun casual meal by the sea. You can also visit the Submarine Force Museum at the New London sub base. Of course you going to drive right by DC, Baltimore and NYC. Each with lots to do. Have fun.

RE: Texas Blue Bonnets

We live just outside of Austin and all of the reports are the the flowers should be great this year. Another good campground is Pedernales Falls State Park. Driving the back roads from Johnson City north then over to Enchanted Rock State Park has a number of areas that are stunning when the blooms are out.

RE: keeping a chewing dog off TT

If you are trying to keep the dog away from the TT with parked in the yard how about a low garden fence, or even chicken wire staked aroung the TT to close up the space from the bottom of the TT to the ground? It would look like heck but easy to pull up when ready to leave. Kind of like the post directly above.:S

RE: Do I really need an oven?

We camp in National Parks without hook ups and having the gas oven is nice. Between the oven and the Weber Q I can do a mean Thanksgiving dinner. We would not go without one. But your cooking needs may be different.

RE: Wheel Well Protection?

What about a few thick coats of Rinoliner material painted inside the wheel wells? It is mighty tough stuff on truck beds. The top of the wheel well, which is really the TT floor, is that waterproof membrane. Not sure if Rhinoliner would stick to that also I would think that the material might sag with the extra weight thus reducing the clearance. Thanks to all for a number of good suggestions. I will either be adding a mid weight sheet metal plate to each side or lay something up in fiberglass with aluminum mounting blocks embedded. Would still like to see any photos of what others have done.

RE: Wheel Well Protection?

Falcoman, I had not thought about a TPMS. I'll look into that. I do use the green/red valve caps and check them at every stop and I keep a compressor and good tire gage in the trailer. Also with good commerical Firestone LT tires I am not too concrened about a blow out but your point is well taken. The distance from the tire to the wheel well, with one tire fully supporting that side, is right at 1 inch in a static state. With both wheels on the ground I am at 3.5 inches. Which is in line with what I understand is normal. I have been in contact with JBarca regarding his mods to increase this distance. I really like how he increased the length of the center hanger. But I have not pulled the trigger on this. I am not fully convinced that I need to do so and also I do not know of a good welding shop nearby that I can work with on this. This is what lead to the question about preventing damage of an unwanted tire rub at full deflection. I don't think I'll be sitting all the way down on the tire but as the trailer bounces, with one flat, I don't want to tear up the wheel well while I get it off of the road.

RE: Wheel Well Protection?

Lantley, I hope the weather is treating you better. Good input. I did not know of TT that have metal in this area. If I do have a blowout it's also going to take out my low point drains right between the wheels on the right side. But then again some protection may be better than none. Stripit, Do you have a photo of yours? How did you attach your plates? I may have to stay with flat plates, at least on the left side as the slide jack is at the rear of this area and I'm not sure that I can clear it easily if I try to form a metal liner that wraps down on the ends. But I will go back and look at this. You are correct having a shop put a couple of bends in is cheap and the cost for a heavier gage metal is miminal.

RE: WDH will make the breaker for me

Given that you can replace the factory hitch for around $200 I would not make that a deal breaker. Find the best truck and if the hitch is questionable then change it out. The job is not hard to do.

RE: Wheel Well Protection?

Or how about a brand new set of 4 Michelin 6 ply truck tires, and a good insurance policy. Lots of good options. I need to think about the best way to do this. Would like to keep it cheap. I did make the change to LT tires last year so at least the probability of a failure is much lower.

RE: Wheel Well Protection?

Good points so far. Anything other than a simple flat plate may be more expense than I would like, given that the benefit may be less than desired. I may still do the flat plate more as protection from road debris.

Wheel Well Protection?

I was looking at the TT the other day, while doing the EZ Flex install, and was noticing how little clearance I have between the top of the tire and the wheel well (TT floor). I have measured several times and lifted the TT one tire at a time, until the other on that side is off of the ground, and I don't think that I will rub even if I get a flat. However the distance is really close. Looking at the top of the wheel well the TT floor above is protected by a waterproof plastic/woven material. This material looks like it would be easily damaged if a tire throws a tread. I have read a number of posts where members say that they have had a lot of damage when a tire on the TT blows. So here is the issue. I am thinking of installing a thin sheet of galvanized steel sheet metal over the top of the tires to protect this plastic. The pieces would be about 5'6" long and 9 to 11 inches wide. I should be able to use short screws and attach them to the floor above. Has anyone done this? Is there any issue with driving screws through this material, assuming that I apply caulk to the pilot holes? I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks.

RE: Where to place jack on Keystone Passport 29bh

I use a stack of 2x8" nailed together with the next one up a bit shorter and the top one about 18" long. Then just back up, or pull forward, the good tire on to the blocks to lift the bad tire off of the ground. No jack needed and it does not sink into soft ground. I keep it in my front pass through.

RE: looking for a hybrid

You may be able to find a used Starcraft/Travelstar 23SBS. No longer made but a nice floorplan.

RE: Chevy 2500 6.0l with Cougar 310SRX

I used to have a 2001 Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0 and 4.10 rear. My normal towing weight is 9500 lbs with a gross of 10K. In the flat land this is fine and even in moderate hills it is OK. However you will have to get used to the sound of the engine running at fairly high revs. Gas mileage for us was normally at 8.5 mpg. While our truck was OK with towing that load I was always a bit stressed with having to rev the motor so high anytime we hit even the smallest hill. I was able to fine a good used Dodge 2500 with the Cummins 6.7 and towing is no longer stressful and our mileage is now 11 to 12 mpg. Bottom line is that the Chevy will handle it but you would be better off with a diesel at that weight where you live. Good luck.

RE: Help a noob break a what to purchase tie please!!

I own a Keystone and have had no problems with it at all. However looking at the two floorplans I like the Coachman better. Bigger slide on the Coachman and I really do not like the sink next to the sofa on the Bullet. Also the Coachman gives you room for the kids to bring a friend. Another Keystone option that is closer to the Coachman floorplan would be the Keystone Passport 2910BH.

RE: Must have tools, keeping weight in mind......

Don't forget to take a ramp, blocks of wood in increasing lenghts nailed together, to use for changing a tire. Run the good tire up on the ramp to lift the bad one off of the ground. Much easier than using a bottle jack, safer too.

RE: Big Water Tanks & Generators

Northwood Mfg, which makes Nash and Artic Fox, makes TTs with reasonably large tanks and several models with a generator option.
