RE: Carriage RV

Just purchased a 2010 Carri-Lite CL 36XTRM5, so I still have the brochure in front of me. As to tire size, LT235/85R16 "G" range Goodyears come on it. All they say about their axles is that they are Dexters with a 2-1/2" brake system. I purchased the optional Mor/ryde independent suspension and disc brakes on which there is no mention of weights.

RE: HDT/5er vs Class A MH

Just a recent observation. Spent two nights in a repair facility waiting for my new awnings to arrive. I was the only fiver in there, counted ten to twelve Class A types being repaired. Asked the owner if this was typical, he said "no" usually there are NO fivers in there to be repaired. Sure glad I made the switch!

RE: Turck set up for 5ver

2008 F-450, sprayed in bedliner, Trailersaver hitch, MorRyde pin box, 60 gal. aux. tank/toolbox combo pulling Carriage Carri Lite. It is a very, very smooth pull each time, very happy with the hitch and pin box combo. Extra fuel means driving all day, drop off the fiver and go fuel where ever I choose, no truckstop problems ever. Fuel mileage varies of course depending on terrain, highs in the low 10s, lowest yet in the Black Hills of South Dakota in the low 8s. Compared with the mileage I got with my Class A DP, I couldn't be happier. First Ford, first fiver, very pleased with both.

RE: 19.5" wheels

Capt. Skup and I have the same rig, mine came with Continentals (which I have never had any experience with) and I concur with the Capt. No dramatics, just smooth sailing. Hit a bit of sidewind in Kansas last month, not a problem with truck or fiver.

RE: air ride 5th wheel hitch

I have a MorRyde pinbox, a trailersaver hitch. I have had NO experience with anything else, but I can tell you I have never experienced chucking, (as I understand it) and the ride up front is smooth to the point that sometimes when I look in the mirrors I'm surprised to see my fiver back there. I do know the DW has never had "stuff" bouncing out of cabinets after a pull, and that used to happen even in our 45' DP. I am very pleased.

I don't think there is much reason to lose sleep over this one, unless you just happen to own a very abreviated TV!

RE: Which would U pick: Signature vs. KingAire vs. Nimbus?

Now is definately the time to look for a two or three year old Prevost. None of the three you mentioned come close to Prevost quality gor the buck spent.

RE: Newbies

You can't afford to do it. Don't mean to be a killjoy, but I have gone through this cycle twice. Sold my first home and moved into a A class motorhome. Got tired of fixing it, sold it and moved back into a house. Got the bug again and purchased a fiver, sold the house, and finally happy with full timing. But....each time I did this the cost of getting back into fulltiming went up. This is not a cheap thing to get into if you want to enjoy it. If you spend all your time and money repairing something, you will hate it, and once the house is gone, you're kinda in a bad place to go back to one. And don't forget, you still have a truck to buy, and that ten year old 1/2 ton you have had your eye on will not pull much of anything, especially a fiver of any size. Both times I did this it took everything I made from the sale of the house to purchase the rv. The first time I pretty much broke even, but the second time (no doubt due to our economy) I took a bath. There are benefits to the lifestyle, but they will grow mighty thin if you can't afford anything but your fiver and truck.

RE: Cameo owners - help with interior lights

Nobody has mentioned that if you pull the whole unit out of the ceiling by accident (or on purpose) to get the lens cover off, beware the two springs that hold it in the ceiling. Those little suckers bite your fingers when they pop out of the ceiling!

RE: Aux Tank with external Pump???

Sloman, there is a wealth of information on this topic in several threads, but why would you want to mess with pumping from one tank to another? Most folks seem to prefer a gravity feed system from the aux. tank to your truck's tank. Pretty foolproof and I doubt it would affect your warranty.

RE: Re:gas stations

Go to Northern Tools or most truck outfitters and purchase an aux. fuel tank. Mine has a shallow tool box on top making the whole thing appear to be a standard tool box. It holds sixty gallons and with the thirty five the truck holds I'm good for all day. When you arrive at your campground of choice, diconnect and go find fuel anywhere you want to without worrying about where you will fit. There are a lot of threads on the subject.

RE: New Cameo on Order: Disc Brake Upgrade?

My rig is a 2009 Carri-lite/2008 Ford 450 and I had heard that the Ford integrated brake control system would not work with the Disc brakes on the Carri-lite. My disc system is a Carlisle system installed by Carriage, and Carlisle says no problem, the Ford system will work just fine. Update: Just returned from a two week trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Brakes worked just fine, no jerking, totally smooth operation, Carlisle was correct. My advice to all Ford owners with the new integrated brake controller, check with the company that makes the disc brakes you are using. You may be pleasantly surprised to find out that the Ford system will work.

RE: What Would You See In The Northwest?

The national parks and tourist areas will quiet down AFTER Labor Day, but not much before. Having lived in three of the states you want to visit, I plan my trips into them during September. Plan your time wisely, as you can get snow in the Dakotas anytime in October, and plan on rain in the Great Northwest at about the same time. You have a beautiful trip ahead of you. Have fun!

RE: Best Insurance?

We got a good quote on our 2004 Chinook Summit from Good Sam/Gmac. Better than anything quoted to me from USAA, Progressive, and Geico.

RE: Insurance reccomendations for F450 + 5th Wheel.

Now I'm confused about GMAC. I purchased my F-450 exactly a year ago and at that time I insured just the truck, as I had not completed the deal on my fiver. Then the Obama thing hit, so had to put off purchasing the fiver till I knew that I still had $$ to do it. GMAC insured the truck on the basis that they were going to insure the fiver as well, so they DID NOT charge a commercial rate on it. Ok, now it is time to renew, I have the fiver now, so went back to GMAC and they tell me they won't insure the truck and fiver as we are going full time. However, (this is the confusing part) they will still insure me through Progressive. Hello? What does GMAC have to do with Progressive? Bottom line, I am now insured with Progressive, they know we are full timing, but I am being charge a commercial rate on my truck. Whats up with that?

RE: Lyme Disease....getting bad!

Found out something of value for your animals the other day. Our vet gave our dogs a shot (don't have a clue what he called it) that would help in preventing Lyme in dogs. Check it out, especially if you live around a lot of deer.

RE: portable water softener from Campingworld

We stay in the Hill Country here in Texas where the hardness index of the water is 32-33. For those of you unfamiliar with hardness index numbers, 32 grains of hardness is really, really hard water. We use the On The Go softner to protect water heater, faucets, etc. and it works very well. The DW does a load of washing every day, so we can't go much more than five or six days between charges. I'm thinking of adding a second unit to the first so I don't have to add salt as often. And yes, we connect directly to the campground water supply, we don't fill up with soft water before we travel.
