RE: Improving Insulation

More bang for the buck by working on the ceiling insulation.
My thought has been to do this, but HOW?

RE: Sandpiper owners

Hey Bass I looked up the model that you have and wow it really is basically the same. One nicer feature in the pilgrim is the u shaped booth. Would you by chance know how wide the lower double bunks are? The problem I am having is no-one within 6hrs of me carries this unit so we haven't been able to actually see one. When you say out of business do you mean Pilgrim ?
Yup, Pilgrim is out of business, but you might be able to find one for sale still. I'd sell you mine but you probably get a better deal on a new one of any brand.
The bottom bunks on mine are full-size beds so they are wider than the twin beds on top. So if you really wanted to, you could get six kids in the back.........
Oh and on edit, what Jetboat said about the usage and age of the kids, we will get MANY years out of ours because my kids are 5 and 3 and we have another on the way, so as long as it will roll, it will go behind my truck wherever we vacation.

RE: Sandpiper owners

Not bad for weekend or extended length camping. Not full timing material in my opinion but is nice nonetheless. Is this the model with the 4 bunks in the back? If so, you will love the floor plan.
We looked at it several years ago when the plan first came out and were close to going with it but went with the Pilgrim Legends of the same floorplan instead (even though sadly they are now out of business) and love the floorplan. Good luck on your purchase.

RE: freshwater problem

If you don't have a water filter, now might be the time to go ahead and get one, it might prevent this from happening in the future. Especially if you do have bad co-op or well water at the lease. There is so much sediment and gunk that can clog up a water line, it is really quite disgusting.

You got to it before I did, but yes, you realized that it is worth it. I did it a while back before going to a 5er and loved it. For what it is worth to other readers!

RE: B&W Companion with 3850 Cyclone Toy Hauler

I use the Companion with the 5th Airborne pin box. But, I think it is the whole system of the Airborne, Equaflex suspension and shocks that make everything ride smooth. I hardly notice my 5er behind me and hitting bumps doesn't hurt.
I like the 5th Airborne because it is easy to use. It is quite amusing to see how much of the chucking and bumping is being taken up by the pin box while I am driving. I glimpse back and see the hitch moving A LOT on what I thought was smooth road! My wife was amazed that she left items on the kitchen counter and everything was still in place!

RE: male to female 5th wheel conversion?

There are also a couple of true fifth wheel hitches that use the mounting of the goosneck in the truch bed to attach to the truck:
see turnover hitch fifth wheel.
The drawing on that site is not a Companion Hitch, and whatever it is, it's also not a turnover ball system. But the pictures are a B&W Companion Hitch. Odd...
Those pictures aren't of the Companion hitch that I have. Surely they haven't changed it?

RE: freshwater problem

If you were on well water at your deer lease, or even marginal co-op water I third the motion that you may have a blockage at the faucets. If you have the water on and hooked up and don't have any water running out from somewhere or hear it going out somewhere, there is a blockage.

RE: Towing 5th wheel Big Horn

Get a dually, no questions asked. I much prefer to err on the safe side rather than the maybe it isn't so safe side. My trailer weighs 14,900 pounds fully loaded. My real world pin weight was over 2800 pounds. I had a 2500HD, until I bought the 5er. I then promptly traded up to a 3500 DRW. The 2500HD is a stout truck, but not stout enough to safely tow with THAT much weight in the bed of it.
You get used to driving a dually and nothing else seems right.

RE: water filter

I installed Lowes household water filters with progressively smaller micron filtration underneath the basement area. I custom routed the lines so it would filter both the city water and the water tank. Under the sink I mounted another filter for the cold water side only for the drinking water. We have never had any issues with pressure. I change the filters out every 3 months or so. Just as an example. We had camped at a friend's ranch and used the well water hookup. The "before filters" trip almost stained the toilet and sink due to sediment plus it tasted horrible. The "after filters" trip a few weeks later was unbelieveable. The water was crystal clear and tasted like it was clean city water.

RE: About to give up

New tires yes, a number of things will help your truck out (gears, 351 engine swap, power adders, springs, etc) but like others have said, you'd probably be better off finding a good used truck that is capable from the get go rather than spending a lot of money to help your truck out.

RE: Montana Lug Nuts AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Getting back to foggly remembering your original problem, I cannot recall if anyone suuggested that the "tech" :h maybe did not get the studs seated all the way in the hub and you are merely pulling the stud down in where it should have been to start with.
that would be easy enough to check, besides if that thing is continuing to turn something is wrong that needs to be checked anyway.
My money is on the stud installation and not on all the high tech problems.
I agree with this, I had to replace some studs on a wheel hub a while back and just hammered them in, in doing so they didn't get fully seated. After it seemed like forever turning the wrench to tighten, they finally torqued down and have not been an issue since.

RE: Fall Camping experience

Or deer feeder legs (no comments now). Those thing that may deflect an arrow become out of focus or you just don't "see" them when you are concentrating on your shot placement. Believe me, been there done that and it isn't fun.
Heck even with a rifle things like that can go unnoticed. My BIL shot at a HUGE buck and MISSED because of a T-post that was in between him and the deer. The bullet deflected off of the post that completely went unnoticed due to his concentration on the shot!

RE: ??? About Dodge Mega Cab 3500 DRW

On that note, what kind of mileage do you guys see with a DRW Megacab 4x4? Solo and towing? Anything has got to be better than my Duramax. I love my truck but the mileage isn't very good.

RE: ??? About Dodge Mega Cab 3500 DRW

Yeah, I know it doesn't make sense, but it clearly states that any use of a pinbox that utilizes a wedge or something of that nature to change the rotating point of the hitch would void the warranty. I just hate to try the Companion and cut a large hole in the bed to do so only to find that it is just too close of a call. I still need a gooseneck though so I may be limited anyway.

RE: ??? About Dodge Mega Cab 3500 DRW

HaulinBass.......
The Dodge has the tightest turning radius of all three 3500 trucks...by far! I have a 102" wide toyhauler and I can almost do a full 90 degrees. I'm about 1/2" from doing it in perfect conditions. And about 4"s from 100 percent safety. I would keep the hitch you have, but add a sidewinder pin to your 5th Airborne. Check it out, they are cool.
Mav
Unfortunately I can't use a sidewinder pinbox with the B&W Companion. It is prohibited by warranty because of the loads it places on the hitch due to the rotation point being at the trailer rather than the hitch. It has to do with the square post they use to mount the 5er hitch in the bed, it doesn't have enough strength for the rotational forces. BUT, if you, with a wider 5er are able to make those kind of turns, I think I would be safe with a narrower trailer. BTW, do you know how far back from the front of the bed your hitch is mounted as far as the actual pivot point?
Can anyone using a B&W Companion towing with a Mega Cab pipe in? (If there are any?)

RE: ??? About Dodge Mega Cab 3500 DRW

Ok, good to know about the Aisin, the way the dealer made it sound was that it was THE automatic that was mated to the 6.7L.
Well, I guess that the weight issue is really a non issue. My other concern then would be the need for a slider hitch. Is the bed the same length as a short bed/quad cab? My trailer is 98" wide and has a 5th Airborne extended pin box. Do I need to worry about a slider or am I good to continue on with my B&W Companion? I've never had to worry about that since I've only towed with a long bed truck.
Oh and how is the turn radius of that truck. I can tell you that my Chevy STINKS and that a Ford F350 dually 4x4 I test drove turned the tightest turn radius I've seen in a truck that size! And as a lot of yoy may know, if your truck doesn't back and turn very well, then neither does your 5er!

RE: ??? About Dodge Mega Cab 3500 DRW

My plan was definitely an 2009 or early 2010 (before they change the body mid-year).
Due to the short bed I am assuming I will need to get a slider. How many of you use a non-slider hitch and are okay with it? I use the B&W turnover and have a Companion hitch. They work great and I hate to get rid of it but will if I have to. I am getting a G/N horse trailer and like the ease of use of the B&W. I don't think I really want to add the extra length of an 8' custom bed on it to get the length.
I just think it is very odd the numbers they put out for the Mega-cab. To be honest I was just going to hitch up and not worry about, I have seen plenty towing with what would be considered (by the numbers) "over pay-loaded" Mega-cab trucks. I just couldn't see it being any sort of an issue since there is only a 200-300 difference in weight on the same chassis.
What is the take on the Aisin 6spd automatic? I have yet to drive one (I've tested the 6spd manual). Is it going to hold up better than the old Dodge 4spd autos? I got to have something that is reliable. The Cummins is no worry but everyone knows the Dodge autos are notorious for giving out.
