RE: What is a Big Rig

The only time I pat attention to big rig is if they use it to classify RV sites that can handle 35' or longer motor homes and trailers with slides.

RE: Gulfshores,AL, are dogs allowed on beach?

No sir, not allowed at all, not even in the public parking lots for beach access.

RE: Washington DC ?

And if you plan on getting a parking place at a Metro station on a week day, you should also plan on arriving very early. Most all Metro parking lots are packed with commuters by 8am. College park and some other select parking lots do fill rather quickly. If you find CP full, you can always go to Greenbelt, which from Cherry Hill RV Park is not that far and might be easier to get to by going just going down the beltway/95S to the dedicated exit.

RE: Insurance

I recommend you quote around. I did the same and found that the pricing was all over the place. I ended up with progressive, and my renewal came in at a slight decrease over last year. So I stuck with them for now, that could change with the next renewal.

RE: Nissan Titan

Before I sold my Titan to fund my DP, I pulled a 8500# loaded enclosed race trailer without any issues for about 20k of its 40k miles. I would recommend a sway control if your over 24' of trailer. I was getting around 11 towing through the hills of PA heading to Watkins Glen, 12 or so in the DC area towing to WV, and about the same heading south to VIR near Danville, VA.

RE: Sirius dropout

Correct. XM uses 2 stationary orbit satalites to cover the US. Sirius uses 3 satalites using an eliptical orbit through north and central america. Because of that, I have found times where depending on your attenna location if you do not have a 360degree view of the sky there are times when the signal just can not get through. Since it is a multicast satalite (no 2 way communications) it is similar to your GPS where it looks for at least 1 if not more satalite signals to latch onto.

RE: pet friendly

Gulf Shores is the most pet unfriendly location I have yet to visit, even at the RV parks. Though I find many of the comments here from the pet unfriendly RV.net members just as disturbing. Too bad everyone is out to rush judgement about pet waste but overlooks all the wildlife waste that their kids, grandkids, nephew twice removed are still playing in.

RE: XM subscription problem warning

wow if they are giving out deals like that I might have to resubscribe. I was with sirius since it came out, then when they merged they messed up two if my favorite channels. A friend of mine still have the service and they seem to have improved. BTW from day one sirius was auto renew if you used a credit card, so I am not surprised. But when I cancelled this past year it was when my CC on file had expired and I chose not to renew.

RE: Air impact tool torque

I just replaced my steer tires. I picked up the phone and called my shop, told them to call their truck tire guy for 2 tires. Cost me the same amount of labor and a 40 dollar on site dispatch fee to have someone with the correct tools remove and install the tire and lug nuts.

RE: Pet Friendly Florida Beaches

It's kind of pricey - but the Beverly Beach RV Park N of Daytona is ON the beach, and dogs are allowed to be walked on leash along the ocean. Bring your scooper - the local ordinance regarding picking up after your dogs imposes a stiff fine on slackers (Yay!) We've stayed there a few times and always enjoy it! Beverly Beach Camptown, Flagler Beach, FL. I thought their prices where pretty good for what you got. The spaces are roomy, the Ocean is right there (you have to get ocean front or ocean access otherwise you have to cross A1A to get to the beach. My pups loved it and you can walk the beach for quite a distance without running into issues.

RE: New Carpet Yea!!!!

I was lucky, the previous owner ditched the front carpeting in my 2001 Monaco for pergo through to the bath area. Carpeting still exists in the bedroom area.....its perfect for me as I spend a lot of time in sandy or dirt areas and the light color carpet would never last.

RE: sc campground

South of the Border for northern SC (you just need an overnight spot its a nice wide open field.) Point South KOA off exit 33 is nice for lower SC if you make good time....but if you come in after 10, its not as easy to navigate to a spot.

RE: Dirty oil 02' sig

I get the same reaction from diesel truck owners that do not understand big deisel motors. 15-25k or 12 month intervals are normal when your running from 7-10gallons of oil (24-40quarts.) Heck my oil filter alone takes a gallon of oil to fill it. But much like you, I got a bus with questional service records for the past 2 years when I bought it in april 2009 (I think it actually sat.) So I did a service when I bought it, and then again this past december before my florida vacation. From now on, I will do the service before my big trip down to FL in 2010.

RE: Diesel Ideling

Anti idling laws always exclude cold starts and warm ups. Thus why the new nanny idlers on diesels only work when at operating temperature (idle or full temp.)

RE: Summerizing

First use is generally at the end of March for me. And in the DC area that usually means no more hard freezes. But if it stays particularly on the cold side this march, I will at the least open my low points and keep the faucet valves open in case we do get cold enough for a hard freeze before the end of April when I will use it again.

RE: Straight pipe exhaust for diesel pusher

I will mirror what a few others have mentioned on here. I race and build turbo Porsches. I know that a turbo gas engine is a different animal than a turbocharged diesel. You mirrored it in much more detail the I gave the time for but it was a great summery. I am pretty certain I would never run a straight exhaust, I was driving to work recently behind one of those 5 dollars to NYC busses that had to be straight piped as the exhaust notes where so loud that I could not bear to think of my pusher being that loud. But with my club racing background I am sure if I ever need a new exhaust I will head to one of my shops and see who can mandrel the replacements and find a suitable aftermarket muffler considering the replacement OEM muffler could fund my little ITB cars engine refresh.

RE: First time traveling I-95 to Fla.

66 - 17 - 95 has the least amount of hill climbs. 81-77 has some climbs but nothing I felt was excessive. 81-64-95 is probably the most scenic interstate route I can think of but from i-81 to i95 you have to climb and decent of reasonable grade, I want to say 6%.

RE: Straight pipe exhaust for diesel pusher

Though I may be young, I am a motor head of sorts. I have gone over many gas and motor specs and never once seen a maximum spec on headers and exhaust, only minimum specifications. What I can back up is without specific details, it is very hard to say what would and would not help increase your power and fuel mileage. The great things about diesels and turbos is that unless you mess with the maximum boost to fuel ratio a change in exhaust can not harm you. But even with all that said, I am not sure I want my bus to sound like a tractor trailer when idling at a campground as I prepare to pull out. She is already loud enough in my opinion.

RE: Replacing tires on Toad

I really like the Yokohama Geoalander tires on a LT. Not as aggressive a tread (quieter on the road) but great handling in the snow.

RE: First time traveling I-95 to Fla.

If your taking 81, do not bother with 66 to 17. Just take it down to I77 south and meet up with I95 in South Carolina and continue down. It should work out to be no more/less then a 50 mile difference in route.
