RE: How do I rate a campground on the Good Sam website

In the latest Good Sam park review book, they explain that the parks are now reviewed by folks that actually have a checklist of things to look for and the definitions for the grades. Its in the back of the book.
As previously mentioned, RV Park Reviews allows campers that stayed there to review the parks. But if you look at several of them, you'll find that the low marks and the high marks are often based on things out of the CG owner's control, nor are there any definitions of what's a 10 and what's a 1. I've seen CGs get a 1 from somebody because they allow golfcarts and others that give the same CG a 10 because they allow those same golfcarts.

RE: Sightseeing in a C w/no toad

I'm with Tatest on this, except I always pull a toad because I'm always headed to some attraction. The historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown all have pull thru parking for RVs at the attractions, but not in the towns.
Yellowstone/Tetons can be driven (mostly) but the bigger the vehicle, the rarer the parking place to pull over.
A lot of the Peter Norbeck Trail in the Black Hills can't be driven in a MH. The drive up to Mt. Rushmore and Needles highway have narrow tunnels, pigtail bridges, and tight 180 degree curves.
BUT - because of that, many of the RV parks in those areas have connections with rental car places like Enterprise.

RE: State CG or parks?

Maybe its because you post questions about RV Parks in the Class A forum (which you have) and the Class C forum (which you don't), instead of the RV Parks forum, since you're looking for an RV Park.

RE: Taking advantage of the stupid!

As a young man, I got myself deep in debt because credit was easy to get. I was a prompt payer, and they loved me. Then I sat down and figured out how much I was actually paying for that new car. I drove that car until I paid it off(early). Now I pay cash or I don't buy. I've actually had a car salesman try to talk me into financing a car after I told him I was paying cash. They get a kickback.

RE: Golf???

Speaking of the LPGA, I can only dream about being as flexible as the ladies. Their swing from the address position easily travels through 720 degrees. I'm lucky to swing through 360 degrees as I age, and the best I ever did was probably 450 degrees as a young man. If I even tried, I'd be in traction.

RE: Progressive RV Insurance Scam

I retired from a P & C Insurance Company. Every state regulates insurance rates and coverages in one of three ways. Some states stay out of it all together. Not many. Some states control what can be sold and set the rates that can be charged for that coverage for every policy sold in the state. "Defined Coverage" states. And some, like California, are "File and Use". Companies file their policy coverages and rates with the state, but the state doesn't dictate the coverages or what they charge. That information is in the body of the policy. We know you didn't read it, but relied on your agent, who also apparently didn't read it.
Replacement cost coverage is generally available as an upgrade, but the premium is also higher. Sounds like your agent let you down by not telling you about your coverages. I'd be looking for a different agent.

RE: Need suggestions for parks FL to NewOrleans I-10

Two things to keep in mind.
Mardi Gras in New Orleans is March 4th,2014 and the parades begin on February 15th. A great party, but if your wife doesn't suffer wall to wall drunken fools gladly, she may not be impressed.
Pensacola gets "nippy" in January and February. Certainly warmer than central Virginia, but not beach weather. I was stationed there for two years. Weatherbase
At least the beach won't be crowded. :)

RE: Ohio, Kentucky, or West Virginia??

I second South Bass Island. Take the ferry from Port Clinton to Put-In-Bay. There's a state park campground on the island, and everything is within easy walking distance. Very laid back EXCEPT Fourth of July. Big party time for the bigger boys and girls. I don't think you want your kids to grow up that fast.
They used to fly folks out on one of the last three Ford Tri-Motor planes, but I think they finally ran out of parts.

RE: Jacking up 5th wheel

I carry a Good Sam Roadside Assistance card. I've had to use it twice and the service was prompt. And its a lot lighter than carrying a 5 ton bottle jack around. :)

RE: Health

Since I travel by myself, I do several things to take care of my back.
1. I plan 300 mile days - about 6 hours of driving.
2. I stop at rest areas, use the bathroom, then walk around my rig to make sure everything is where it belongs while stretching my legs.
3. When my back starts hurting, I have a bath towel that I doubled, rolled up tight and tied off with string. I slide it between my back and the seat to change the position of my spine for awhile.

RE: Washing clothes at a campground.

If the RV park I'm in has a laundry room, I use their machines, otherwise I hit a laundromat. Anyplace that I can use multiple washers and dryers. One for colors, one for whites. Pocket T-shirts and jeans for the color load, underwear for the white load. I don't go anyplace that requires me to be more dressed up than that. Anything that requires ironing isn't part of my wardrobe, either at home or on the road.
I had a buddy in college that dumped all his freshly laundered clothes from home in one corner of his room and piled the dirty clothes in an opposite corner. When all the clothes were in the "dirty pile", it magically became the "clean pile" and he started another "dirty pile". Nobody wanted to be his roommate. :)

RE: Homemade Liquors

Back in my college days, I was a groomsman in a friend's wedding into an Italian family. I had a bad cold, but still had to be there. At the reception, every member of the bride's large family made me drink a shot of their personal homemade liquor that was gonna "fix me right up". Well, it didn't have much effect on my cold, but in about an hour, I just didn't care - about anything.

RE: Oakplantation vs Mt. Pleasant KOA in Charleston, SC

One other thing. Many of the locals make and sell hand woven baskets made from the local dried sea grass. Beautiful work, reasonable prices and they make good gifts for friends when you get home.

RE: Mosquitos!

A bunch of us used to do a golf week in Myrtle Beach every spring. They're big enough to carry away a small dog down there. We used to go through three or four cans of Deep Woods OFF every day. We sprayed all exposed skin, our socks and golf shirts.
Lots of places sell electric mosquito swatters. They look like a badminton racket and the handle holds a couple of "D" batteries. The mosquitos never see it coming until there's a spark and a zap! Very satisfying feedback.

RE: I'm Sleeping on the Ceiling Tonight

Not all snakes are poisonous, but to me, they're all deadly. Scared to death. When I was a kid, I was pulling a barn door open that was on an overhead track. A black snake fell out of the track and landed across my arm.
Since then, I've entered into an agreement with all the snakes in the world. If they stay away from me, I'll leave them alone. That means staying away from tall grass and wood piles, and they have to stay away from my house and RV. So far, we've both lived up to the agreement.
I've always believed that if I stepped on a bear's paw, I pretty much deserve to be mauled, but I could step on a snake entirely by accident with no malice in my heart.

I've stayed at the Mt. Pleasant KOA a couple of times. Nice folks running it and a beautiful setting. Its back off the road enough that you don't hear the traffic on 17.

RE: Pets are NOT to be left unattended... what??

Apparently nobody has loud, drunken parties and/or loud barking dogs, so you have to wonder why CG operators have to mention it in their rules.
I've never faced the problem myself, but the campground is where I park my rig to see things in the area, so I'm not there during the day, and most dog owners are home in the evening which makes the dogs happy and quiet. If animals or humans were out of bounds noise-wise, I'd talk to the park manager/owner, since I'm paying the same fee as others in the park and expect them to follow the same rules that I do.

Seems very reasonable, which is unusual in these situations. Maybe because Custer is a popular destination for RVers. Certainly one of my favorites.

RE: RV Parking Rights Manual?

Meeting was on the 13th. Today's the 17th. What was the outcome? I hope they didn't follow the typical 4 point government plan for decision making.
1. Panic
2. Assume the worst.
3. Make a hard and fast rule.
4. Put somebody in charge.
