China tire prices going up

Sounds like a tarrif is going to be put on China made tires, maybe people will start using something else for their trailers now. Just read the article on Fox web site about it. Tarrif on China tires. if anyone is interested in reading the article.

RE: Dodge 3500 reliability, or issues.

I cannot speak for the newer Dodge's. however on my 2003 2500 with 55k miles on it here is the list of work that has been done on it.
Replaced ball joints at 55k
Need to replace U-joints on front drive axle's and the tie rods
Had all the injectors/fuel rail replaced at 48k (under warranty)
Had the Yoke, driveshaft and carrier bearing replaced (under warranty) you can read about this on one of the dodge deisel forum, so some had a problem with the carrier bearing failing and taking out the yoke like it did on mine.
My vacuum pump is starting to fail.
The front seal is starting to leak.
Even with all of this I will still keep my truck, I dont off road with it and I dont abuse the truck. I did have 35" tires on it for about 5k miles at the most, so that may be what took out my ball joints and tie rods.
Not complaining about the truck just letting you know what all I have done to mine in 6 years and 55K miles.

Mice and furnace dont mix

I will spare you the details but mice in the blower section and all over the heat exchanger dont make for a good mix. :S
My mothers neighbor have a one year old trailer and I guess they went camping the weekend before last and it got a little cold so she fired up the furnace and ran everyone out of the trailer :E . They pulled the furnace and was going to take it to a trailer repair shop around here to see if it could be cleaned up and was told some god awful price to clean it up and the price of a new unit.
I had them bring it to me and I tore it apart and cleaned it all out for them and sterilized it all then put it all back together for them. Labor=about 3 hours (took my time and wanted to get it cleaned really good for them), Charge=free they are pretty good neighbors to my mom and look out for her.
It mangled up the sail switch pretty good so I had to straighten it out for them and it was testing good but told them if it didn't lite to bypass the sail switch and see if it lites, if it does then it would need to be replaced and to let me know and I would replace it for them.

RE: Water under the shower

I got my drain at Lowes, its the backing nut that you will have to keep off of the old one. The drain I bought is one you can just use your foot to open and close.

RE: Water under the shower

Mine was leaking like this also, It turned out to be where the metal drain and the fiberglass shower came together. I tried to remove the nut on the bottom side of the drain so I could put in some new plumbers putty but the nut (plastic) did not want to come off and I had to cut it off in place to remove it. I had to get a new nut for the drain which isnt easy to find at the hardware stores because the new shower come threaded so they dont need the nut. After getting the new nut I cleaned it all up and put in new plumbers putty around the seal area and it has worked fine.

RE: Curt 5er hitch

I have the Q5 also, and have been happy with it. There is one thing to watch out for on them, It rarely happens but when the jaws come around to lock around the pin it is possible for one jaw to ride over the other, I have had this happen a couple of times on mine, I always inspect the jaws when hooking up so I would spot it if it happens.
I purchased my Curt Q5 hitch, rails, lube plate and no drill kit from www.etrailer.com they have free shipping on anything over $150, their shipping is very fast also so you may want to look at them also.

RE: Leaking Hot Water Tank

If your tank is steel and not aluminum and the valve was brass then I would guess that it only messed up the valve and you could just replace that. If this is the case and after you take out the valve chase the threads with something to clean out any brass left behind.

RE: Another AC compressor question ... need advice please

How hard will it be for him to get to the line? If its down in there where he cannot see the hole then he will probably have to cut that section of line out and braze in a new section, put in a service port, vacuum it down and charge the system. How old is the unit?

After all, it's well known that a/c problems are 70 - 80 % mechanical and electrical.

RE: Another AC compressor question ... need advice please

You can test like stated above but it will only tell you that its not open and that it is taking a charge (not slamming you Ductape). If you want to test using a cap tester (voltmeter at Sears with cap test is around $30 and will tell you the mfd of the cap) this will tell you if the cap is working within mfd range and not breaking down and here is a Link to cap testing that will help you, remember to kill the power and like stated above to short across the terminal before testing.
Link for Sears multimeter it also can check your temps across coil which is handy to have.

RE: DIY Bedsaver

10" and 12" is all that I know of, hard to tell from a picture which one is being used. Those pin boxs must be REALLY wide, 14" to 15" wide from the looks of the marks if you are already using a 12" lube plate. I just use a 10" lube plate on mine and it actually covers all the way (side to side) and stick out about a quarter of an inch on each side. It was a thought.

Would going to a larger lube plate stop it from scratching it up?

RE: Chevy Wheel Stud Replacement how to?

danda if it was the old style then I would say go for it, but these new sealed front bearings are a pain. My Dodge has them as well and trying to get them off is a major effort especially if you are trying to save them, Most garages will use a sliding hammer to remove them knowing that it will destroy them in the process and they will just add that to the bill. Oh ya they are NOT cheap, yours from a fast search is around $150, maybe they can be found other places cheaper.
If you have the tools and the know how and time you can do it yourself and save some money, but its not an easy project. As you can see in the pictures there is a ridge that the weight of the truck sits on on the bearing but this is the part that is VERY hard to get to come loose without damaging the bearing and there are tricks to do it.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm165/Lostone_photo/Travrotortoasted.jpg
He also shows his with the rotor still attached and you would want to remove that before removing the bearing from the truck it makes it easier to get them apart.

RE: A/C Cutting out

What is the VOLTAGE inside the RV when the A/C quits? Often the problem is low voltage for two reasons; first more folks running A/C, second it draws more current when hot out.
This would be my guess also without more information, everyone is running their A/C putting a heavy load on and the voltage is dropping causing the amperage to rise tripping the breakers.

RE: Rear View Camera For a 5th Wheel

I have been wanting to get a rear view camera setup as well, but wasn't sure I wanted to mount a screen in the cab of the truck. I have been looking at getting one of the stereo's for the truck that has a screen that slides out when you want it, this way I dont have to mount something on my dash. Some of the stereo's have a 7" screen and are designed to be used as a backup camera system.
On edit:
Thomasgunnar posted exactly what I was wanting to do. Thanks for the photo's.

RE: towing mirrors

Check your local ad's and craigs list. I had the mirrors that strap-on and like you said they vibrated so bad I'm not sure they really did me any good. I ended up checking the local ad's and found a set of OEM power, heated, tow mirrors for my truck for $100. But for the money you are saying you can spend on them shouldn't you be able to get factory tow mirrors for that?
