RE: canning while camping

When we start out again, I plan to have my small pressure canner with us so if I find something I want to put up I will be able to. We are thinking of spending next winter elsewhere so it will definitely be with me. I'm a can-a-holic. Like another poster said, if you can handle the weight, do it.

RE: Darn Its Cold in Florida

We're going to call my brother-in-law who lives Terra Verde and tease him about how he must be freezing to death. We were in single digits last night and in a couple of nights we'll be below 0. Not rving. Just snuggled down comfortably in front of the woodburner.

RE: Home is RV - what changes to make if spouse dies?

Galvorien52, you might want to think outside Arlington National Cemetary. I do believe its been closed to burials except those killed in action or high ranking individuals. I have a son from a previous marriage buried there so I can be buried in the same plot, but unless my DH would be buried in the same plot with the two of us, he would not be able to be buried there. There are other National Cemetaries and many State Cemetaries that have free plots for veterans. We have considered the military one in Madison, IN that is considered National, but is state owned. Plots are free and the headstone following the style in that particular military cemetary are also free. Also, the government will provide a casket if you don't mind the cloth covered economy model. Doesn't bother my husband as he plans to be creamated and I figure it doesn't bother me because it won't make any difference and I'd hate to think someone paid a lot of money for a casket that cost a lot just to stick a dead body in. The next time you get to a VA, try to get one of the booklets that spell out all the benefits for veterans, then also check to see what your "home" state has to offer. You could probably get all of the same information online at the Department of Veterans Affairs' website. Oh yes, its quite a bit less expensive this way, too. Free plot and free headstone, that saves a lot right there. Also, if a veteran is buried in a National cemetary and their non-veteran spouse passes, the can also be buried in the same cemetary. Hope this helps out a lot of veterans. So many know so little of what they are entitled to.

RE: Home is RV - what changes to make if spouse dies?

DH and I have discussed this issue several times. He said if anything happened to me, he would sell the S&B (if we hadn't already sold it) and continue RVing. I would do the same, possibly trading in the 5er for a motorhome. As for advanced arrangements, well we are both veterans. We will be buried at a National Cemetary and let the VA take care of it. As for the small amount they wouldn't cover, we have it in reserve for that purpose. Veterans should keep that option in mind. I do believe the spouse of a veteran, even if she is not one herself, can be buried in the same cemetary as her husband.

RE: Annoyed at finding a bible in an RV at a dealer's lot

After we bought our used 5er, we decided to change out to a flat screen HD tv. When we removed the old tv, we discovered a set of the Bible on tapes. It was left by the previous owner, or forgotten. Regardless, I wasn't offended in the least. I wouldn't have been offended if it had been left by the dealer, either. In this beautiful country of freedoms, a bible reader would have received a new copy and a non-reader could politely return it to the dealer or pass it on. No big issue.

RE: Sodastream

I read a lot about the SodaStreams over several months and finally bought one in September at Camping World for my husband's Christmas gift. He loves sparkling water and the price of what he was drinking was .89 per bottle. They raised the price from .59 a bottle about a month after we started buying it. Anyway, I like the idea that we can make it, or sodas, fresh whenever we want it, it will take up a lot less room in the RV and at home and it will be less expensive. We are both diabetic so we will appreciate using the sweetners we prefer. Beacher, thanks for the tip about grape flavored Kool-Aid syrup producing a Nehi grapelike drink. How do you make your syrup? Has anyone tried an orange Kool-Aid syrup?

RE: Holiday Candy

Last year I melted white chocolate, mixed in some crushed peppermint candy canes then poured on a waxed paper lined pan and refrigerated. It was about 1/4" thick. When it was set and totally cool, I broke into pieces and stored in a tin. White Chocolate Peppermint Bark. You could also use a milk chocolate or dark chocolate with the crushed peppermint candy canes. Its addictive.

RE: Why Would I Want a Bread Machine?

I love mine. I do bread in the machine for the first rising and kneading, then take it out and put it in regular pans or shape it into rounds or baquettes for baking in the oven. I have a really fantastic cinnamon roll recipe that I do on the dough cycle, then do the rolling out, filling, shaping and baking in the oven. Have also made Panettone in it for Christmas gifts. If we ever go on a long enough trip, it will go with us.

RE: Cornbread disaster

Kathy, I use Kruteaz Honey Cornbread when I make up bean soup. I started using it many years ago because it suited my husband's fat free diet. We both really like it. My DH is just like your's, crumble the leftover cornbread in a glass then drown it in milk.

RV Manufacturer Getting Ready To Start Hiring

Just heard an announcement on our late news that Heartland RV in Elkhart, IN is going to start hiring. Things are looking up. "Heartland RV plans hiring 400 in northern Indiana (AP) – 11 hours ago ELKHART, Ind. — A recreational vehicle company based in northern Indiana plans to hire more than 400 workers as it increases production. Heartland Recreational Vehicles of Elkhart announced Tuesday it would immediately begin hiring about 200 production workers. The company said it expected 200 more jobs would be added by the end of March, bringing its work force to 1,200 employees. Heartland says orders for its towable recreational vehicles have increased since Oct. 1. Heartland President Brian Brady says it's expecting a big production year in 2010. Other RV companies in the Elkhart area have also recently announced hiring plans. Thousands of layoffs in the RV industry since early last year in Elkhart County pushed its unemployment rate to 18.8 percent in March."

RE: After 39 years in a RV, now IT Is My Turn.

I'd love to have a cat in the fiver to make sure I never have a mouse problem, but I'm afraid my German Shepherd, Sig, would think they were a snack he had to work for. Honestly, don't know how he'd react, but know DH doesn't care for cats. After our one incident with a mouse, DH found the entry points and sealed them.

RE: Freezer Cookie recipes

If you pick up the Better Homes and Gardens' special Christmas Cookies edition magazine that is in stores now, you not only will get a wide range of recipes, they also give freezing instructions at the end of each recipe. If you don't want to spend the $5.99 (high, isn't it?) for it, let me know what kind of recipes you want and I'll will send some to you. I put out the price because I'm doing cookies and cookie trays for resale.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I usually print out the comments on the back of the recipe page, too, Denise. You can avoid the "too much...." plus they may add some suggestioned variations that we might like.
