RE: Dodge CTD - Life of Batteries

I just replaced the batteries in my 05 CTD this winter (50,000 miles on vehicle) when they would not turn the engine over this past winter. I did screw up one time and completely discharged the batteries on it when I left my trailer hooked up to the truck for 3 days while using the trailer with no shore power. May have contributed to them not lasting quite as long as some are reporting.

RE: wheel bearings

I have an 08 Jayco with probably a couple of thousand miles more on it than you and I am going to clean, inspect and repack its wheel bearings before heading out this summer to the midwest and west. They have not been inspected and repacked since the 5er was purchased. Since it probably has chinese bearings and feel it would be wish to service them.

RE: Cheyenne to Hill City, SD

A couple of years ago, we took US 16 west from Custer SD to Newcastle WY, then US 18/85 south to Lusk WY, then west on US 18/20 to Orin WY, then south on IH25 to Cheyenne. We pulled a 34 ft 5er without any problems. The highway to Newcastle was very scenic most of the way while US 18/85 had little traffic with not much along the way. Best I can remember, there was one rest stop with restrooms on US 18/85. Both roads were good with little traffic. Hope this helps.

RE: Dry Cough , Crud , Stuffiness, and Nose Blowing

We have experienced the same problem and been primarily at home during this time. DW has it now and it is going on 10 days. Coughs all night even after taking prescribed cough suppresant. Mucinex and an antibiotic helped me, but Mucinex hasn't helped her. I agree with you, it seems that a lot of people have had a similar ailment.

RE: Upset with costs in Texas. What to do.

Auto insurance rates, property taxes, etc. vary significantly in Texas depending on what county you are using as your residence. Believe it or not even health insurance rates can even vary by where your residency is. Don't know what area of the state you chose, but that look into various insurance rates, etc. by county. Rural counties always seem to be lower. Good luck.

RE: How Many Still RV after Heart Attacks and disability?

I have experienced quite a bit of what you are going thru after I nearly died from a heart attack at age 49. PM me and we can talk about it further. I will say that being extremely stressed out about your situation is normal as I was very stressed also. It is very important that you overcome it or it will ruin your life and may even kill you!

RE: southeast Texas CG'S

You might try Sam Houston Jones State Park outside Lake Charles. I understand that Lousiana State Parks honor the federal senior adult pass, so you would probably save some money too. Marina Bay RV Park near Kemah is also nice.

One Family Per Camp Site Only

Planning for an extended trip to Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Zion and Grand Canyon. Called today about reservations at a private campground outside Glacier. I explained that my two married children and their spouses (no kids) would be meeting us and staying with us in our 34 ft 5er. I certainly expected to be charged extra for them staying with us, but I was quite surprised when the lady I talked with at the campground informed me that only one family was allowed per RV site and that my two married kids were considered separate families. I've never heard of this before. Is this common practice in RV campgrounds?

RE: Red Oak Ranch RV Park

Have passed by a number of times, but we have never stayed there. It is in a wide open field as Google Earth indicated. Best I can remember, the roads and pads are not paved. Apparently, they do have a nice facilities for get-togethers as sometimes there are a number of RVs there occasionally-I suppose for RV rallies.

RE: Jayco axle/suspension adjustment

You didn't mention what axles you have, but if you have the Dexter axles you might want to consider retro them with the Dexter EZ Flex kit since you will have done about 1/2 the work necessary to install the EZ Flex kit when you are raising the trailer using the existing components. Check out EZ Flex here on the forum-a lot of folks have upgraded to it and really like the improved ride of the trailer. In fact, I have the kit here which I am going to install in the next month or so on my 08 31.5 FBH Jayco.

RE: Beaumont, TX Area Boondocking

Personally, I wouldn't bother to boondock in the Beaumont area. The Wal-Mart I think that you are referring to is away from IH-10 which I assume you would be traveling on and in a busy area of town. There is a Sam's Club on the access road of IH-10 in Beaumont, but don't know if they allow overnighters there. There's a very nice RV park on the outskirts of Beaumont when coming into town on I-10 from the west. They are a Passport America park and serve a nice free breakfast for guests. Easy on and off the freeway. Have stayed there before and planning to stay there again in a couple of weeks. Good luck.

RE: Water Pump Hose Replacement Mod Help-LEAKS

Solved the problem possibly a little differently than several others have, so I thought that I would mention it for others who might have a similar problem. First, PEX 1/2 inch hard plastic tubing was installed on the trailer from the factory. It is too hard and transmits a lot of vibration from the water pump and contributes significantly to the noise produced by the pump. So as others have done, a section of the PEX tubing near the water pump needs to be replaced with a more flexible tubing such as the reinforced vinyl tubing. It will definitely reduce the noise. Anyway, I had orginally purchased the 1/2" ID reinforced vinyl tubing but discovered that the fittings which the PEX pipe connnected to were too small for the 1/2" vinyl tubing, and it could not be clamped tight enough to stop leaks from between the tubing and fittings. (The PEX inside diameter was not 1/2" ID but 15/32" ID which I later discovered when I measured it.) I then purchased some 3/8" vinyl reinforced tubing and tried it. It was very tight on the fittings, and I actually had to put the end of the tubing into very hot water to soften the vinyl and get them on the fittings. I now have no leaks and a much less noisy water pump. Thanks for all of the suggestions. Now to consider an accumulator tank?

Water Pump Hose Replacement Mod Help-LEAKS

I am trying to reduce the noise on my water pump by replacing the white rigid plastic pipe with reinforced flexible vinyl hose on the output side of the pump. I purchased 1/2 inch ID clear vinyl hose from Lowe's (Working Pressure - 225#). Unfortunately, the plastic rv pipe fittings are about 1/32 inch smaller and I cannot tighten the hose clamps sufficiently to stop leaks between the fitting and vinyl hose when the pump is running. I even bought a new fitting and it leaks also. Any suggestions on trying a different hose material or type? I thought that I might try one of the vinyl sink hoses and just cut the existing fittings off to see if it might be tighter on the fitting and not leak. Thanks.

RE: dexter ez flex revisited

I purchased an EZ Flex from Dexter-haven't installed it yet. I was told by Dexter that it will lower my trailer height at the axles by 1 inch. So if that is the case, then I would wait until I put the new rims and tires on just in case you need to adjust the trailer height for the increased trailer ground clearance created by increasing tire and rim size. In any case, I would just call Dexter and pose the question to them. Just my 2 cents.

RE: Sam Houston Jones State Park & Spring Creek Park

While we've not camped at Spring Creek Park (we live about 8 miles away) I have passed by the park and camping area a number of times. It is away from main roads and for free looks nice to me. There are always some RVs there.

RE: Galveston to Hot Springs via Texas Rt 59?

As several others have said 5l9 is a good 4 lane highway-most of it is divided but there are some sections which aren't. You will also have to go through 5 or 6 small towns between Texarkana and Houston where there are stop lights, but they are not bad. 59 is definitely the way to go. Forget going through Dallas- I would guess that is about 75-100 miles out of the way with a lot more traffic!

We went this summer on a 14 day cruise tour with Holland America thru Alaska and the Yukon. Since Holland America and Princess are owned by the same company, I believe that they are now teaming up on their Alaska Cruise tours. You may want to check Holland America-we had a great time!!!

I second those already mentioned and recommend Custer State Park, Badlands National Park(a full day trip from Hill City), possibly Wall Drug just outside Badlands National Park, Homestead Gold Mine in Lead S.D. just outside Deadwood and Spearfish Canyon.
