RE: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

Well, with all being said, nothing remains the same, does it? We have been in our house for over 30 years, and we will just have to wait and see what, if anything gets built near us.
We had big plans a few years ago about retiring, selling out and moving up along the White River near Mountian View, AR. We love it up there and could see ourselves sitting on the back porch watching the river go by. Life has a way of slapping you around a bit and health concerns have kept us close to Doctors, kids and grandkids. We are not complaining, just rolling with the punches.
I really do not care what is built across from us, I believe a man should be able to make a dollar any way he wants to, as long as it is legal, just sure do miss that old Magnolia tree though, it was just starting to bloom........

RE: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

Jim, sad to say we DO have a Zoning Commission, but they are appointed by the Mayor and City Council. The "Mayor" is the Developer that owns the parcel. I am assuming there will be at the least several duplexs and at the most a large two story apartment building. Re-zoning applications get approved all the time around here, so I am not getting my hopes up.
We do have a small 2 year college here in town, it has been here for over 70 years. It is still considered a "commuter college" and most students do not reside here during school terms.

RE: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

I guess if I had wanted to invest a large portion of our retirement fund in purchasing the land, I could have bought it. Never knew it was for sale though. Just sad to see the Magnolia tree come down as there are not many left around here, especially the size as that one. I do not think it would have posed much of a problem with construction where it was located.
Yes, progress is inevitable, even here in little ole Beebe, Arkansas. As we speak they are installing our FOURTH traffic control device out on the highway where the brand new WAL-MART Super Center is being built. There are even rumors of a "Cracker Barrel" coming later on.............

"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

We knew it was going to happen sooner or later. We live on a lot in town, and the lot across the street has been vacant for several years. The older home that was there burned several years ago but the owner kept it mowed and clean. It had several large trees on the oversized lot, pecans an oak or two and a large Magnolia here in the front. A couple of days ago a backhoe pulled up and started digging and knocking down all of the trees. We were hoping they would leave the Magnolia, but this afternoon they started cutting on it also. The new owner of the property is a local developer and I guess we will soon have as many apartments crammed on there as they will be allowed to build. Not many of those old Magnolias left around here anymore.....

Attacked in my sleep!!!!

I was sound asleep this morning about 2:00 AM. Suddenly, I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my stomach. My wife had a handfull of fat and was digging her claws deep in my belly. I squealed like a stuck pig and grabbed her hand to disengage the claws from my innards. I don't think she ever woke up.
This morning she asked if I had any scratches on me. I replied, no scratches, just some six inch puncture wounds in my belly. Her excuse was she was having a weird dream. A "little Mexican man" was trying to steal her purse, so she grabbed hold and held on. I don't believe her story. First, she never carried any money in her purse, second, she quit carrying a purse about ten years ago.
It all sounds a little fishy to me...........

RE: It Is So Worth It To Have A Great Steak

Steaks like nice, I have had quite a few cooked in the skillet, but also prefer the grill!!
Now the Jack Daniels' brisket is not among our favorite quick meals. We find the sauce is a little overpowering for our taste. We like the the Sadlers Smoked Brisket from Wal-Mart. We buy the large package and take home and divide it into about four servings for the two of us. It cooks in the microwave in minutes from frozen, add just a little Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce and it is a qreat fast meal. Makes a good "sam-itch" also........

RE: Ever get jealous of your own child?

Don't get jealous, do like I did, pick up and go yourself!!!! We made sure our two kids could experience different things in life, now they are married and off on their own. About ten years ago I was offered the chance to go on a mission trip with a church. We traveled to the mountains of Honduras and I have not stopped since. I have been all over Central America, seen the volcanos in Nicaragua, mountains and rain forest in Honduras, Mayan ruins in Belize but most of all, met some incrediable people along the way. This year will be my fourth trip to Belize and I can't wait... It may not be a Church, but find some cause you can work with and usually travel is a little cheaper, not a lot of time for play, but well worth the price to me....

RE: Queso Dip?

While shopping in the store the other day, I was picking up a box of Velveeta cheese for our weekly nacho night. I looked at the various types of velveeta and found they have:
Regular
2% type
Mexican
Chedder Cheese
That stuff is soon going to look like the Spam section, about 10 different styles........

RE: How about cars you did buy, but wished you hadn't?

Came home from the Army late November, 1970. Needed a vehicle in a hurry and started looking at used cars. Found a 1967 Chevelle, step up from a Nova. 2 door hardtop, 3 on the tree, 307 c.i. motor. Basic car, no a/c and what a dog!!! Kept it a year and traded up to a 1969 Olds Cutlass Supreme, what a car!!! Drove that car for eight years and wish I still had it....

RE: KFC Menu

I eat gizzards!!!! :B Can't get them at the local KFC anymore but there are several convenience stores in the area that make Chester Fried Chicken and they do excellent gizzards. I usually get just a half order, that and a small bag of chips make a great lunch. Livers, they are good for fish bait, don't know how anyone can eat them.......

RE: KFC Menu

Fizz, maybe for a college grad in Canada, but when I graduated from High School in 1968, my first fulltime job at a factory was $1.60 an hour and I thought I was rich. Drafted onto the Army in May 1969, my first full month pay was $98.00 for the whole month, then they got taxes, and we had to send home an allotment of at least $10.00. We didn't need much the first few months, we never left the base to spend it.....

RE: Best inovation in automobiles since in your lifetime

I guess the "best" is four wheel disc brakes on vehicles, also a tie is installing seat belts.
Worse, for me, is the all inclusive touch screen for all the funtions of the vehicle. :h We all know that texting and driving are bad, but yet they want you to fiddle with a screen on the dash to operate the car. Taking your eyes off the road for five seconds at 60 mph is bad, if you are looking at a PED or screen on the dash, to me it is all the same........ :?

RE: Random overnight stops

When my wife and I were traveling quite a bit, we purchased the Trailer Life Camp Directory and carried it in the cab of the truck with us. While on the road, we would decide how much longer we wanted to travel, open the Directory up and find campgrounds we might want to stop at and give them a call on the cell phone to check if they had any sites we could use. Like you, we did not want to unhook from the truck, just connect elec. and water for the nights use. We rarely had trouble finding a spot to use for the night, and we slept well in the summer with the A/C.

Duct tape fixes everythng.......

My wife was in our computer room, and our 3 1/2 year old grandson was laying in the floor coloring in his new coloring book with his new colors. I was in another room gazing at the TV.
Grandson comes to me with one of his new colors in his hand.
"Bimp, can you tape this color together, I broke it in the middle." I told him I did not think tape would hold it very long, but he insisted I tape it anyway. The paper around it was not broken, so I put a wrapping of Scotch Tape around it and took it to him. He looked at it and said, "this is not Duct tape." I said, no I don't think Duct tape would help much either. He looks at me and says, "yes it will, Duct tape fixes anything."
I just hang my head and turn around and leave the room.....

RE: I'm trying to quit smoking.....................

Nope, nothing funny about quitting smoking!!!! Only one other thing harder than a person quitting is their spouse quitting at the same time! We both quit in October, 1986 and started on the gum, we used the gum about 2 months and then quit the gum. At times it was like having a couple of three year olds in the house, ( don't look at me, don't touch me, I had that first,,,,, and so on) We lived through it and have been clean now for 26 years!!!!!!

RE: Ever Google yourself?

"and they couldn't put it on the internet if its not true...", as the commercial goes.
When I was in the hiring business, I relied on good old information I gleaned myself from references and previous employers, took any googling I found with a grain of salt.

RE: Can I deduct my camper and seasonal rent?

Since you RENT your primary domicle, your home of record to say, I do not think you can deduct interest on the RV. I thik the RENT on a seasonal site will not be deductable either way, but I am NOT a Tax Guy, never have been, just from experiece of filing for almost 45 years and doing my own taxes, good luck though......

RE: Black-eyed Pea Time!

NO, NO NO........ YOU MUST USE SMOKED HOG JOWL in the blackeyed peas or everything is for naught. Any REAL Southern guy or gal should know this. You just buy a chunk at the store and throw the whole thing in the pot, after the peas cook, cut up the jowl in either strips or chunks so that everyone gets a piece. If you can't find the smoke jowl, a piece of salted will work, just don't add any salt to the peas after cooking.
