RE: Tire changing Question

Here's a way to do it w/o a jack. Make yourself a leveling block in the form of a V wedge. It should be about 24-30inches long and graduate from zero inches to six inches. Now, assuming you have a tandem axle trailer, run the non flat wheel up the leveling block until the flat tire and axle are off the ground. Set the towing vehicles brakes, block the opposite side tires of the trailer and then just remove the tire. If the flat is on the front end, you will need to back the trailer up the leveling block rather than pulling it on. I find backing a trailer up a leveling block is really dependent on the surface your are on. Most of the time the trucks real wheels spin trying to push the trailer back up the block. When the back trailer wheels hit the block it creates a lifting force on the truck rear wheels and promote spinning not moving.

RE: Tire changing Question

I have changed many a Marthon trailer tires along side the road. I use a bottle jack, a lug wrench and a jack stand that I put close to the wheel on the axle just in case the bottle jack fails. Four years ago I put on Michelin XPS Ribbed tires and have not changed a tire along side the road since. With the Michelins I have hit road hazards and a curb or two that would have doomed my Marathons, but the Michelin's were not phased by the blow. Nowm when I take a tire off it is to pack the wheel bearings and inspect the brakes. A few years ago I added a 18V cordless drill to spin off and on the loose lug nuts. I have also used one of those cheapy impact DC wrenches. It worked, but it was very slow in doing its thing. And, it is now broken. Don't think I'll replace it or buy another.

RE: shuntless ammeter

That is a neat ammeter. Id like to find an AC meter that would be simple like that to tell me the amps I was drawing thru my AC power cord.

RE: Termites in Fifth Wheel?

There are termites in Texas too. Termites are everywhere not just in Florida. I have never had a problem with them in our house or in our fiver. It is just one of those things that I don't worry about in our RV.

RE: Water leak source?

If the location you show is above or near the spot where you wet floor is I would consider that this was the spot. You can try backing out the screws one at a time and filling the screw hole with silicon caulk and then reset the screw. Do this on all the screws. Then wait and see what happens. Or you could cover the area with eternabond tape. It is difficult to spot the exact area as water follows the past of least resistance down hill. I have had wet floors because of a window that the weep holes on the outside frame had clogged up. The water was then filling the little valley in the frame and then seeping in under the window. This was window that slid up to open. Making the weep holes bigger solved the problem for a while, but when it happened the second time I decided we never really open that window so I silicon caulked it shut. Never had a leak problem with that window since.

RE: thanks for advice about running lights But

I don't buy that explanation emblethen. If you have two wires coming off a light bulb than either of those wires could be positive or negative. The electrons will still go where there suspposed to go regardless of which wire you hook up to the positive wire of your RV. Now if your talking about turn signal and brake light hook up that is a different story. But, this post concerned common old running lights.

RE: thanks for advice about running lights But

How can it have bad effects on other systems? It matters not if the electrons run through the bulbs left to right or right to left. The electrons will find their way around the wiring system regardless.

RE: How much time is needed?

My wife and I are an independent sort. We find that our trips are much more pleasurable when we only have to worry about our schedule. We decide on where we are going, but we don't set any schedule to get there or get back. Once we tried going in the company of another RV. After about two weeks we all agreed to go our own ways as our styles were so much different. For this reason we never pay for those commercial caravan trips.

RE: replaceing bad AM/FM CD player

Practically any car unit will work. You just have to find a unit that will go in the place that your old one came out of. Or, find one that with just a little trimming on your part will look like it is part of your RV. Most car audio stores carry trim rings of all sorts to adapt the Units they sell to most any car. You might find one of these trim rings will fit your needs.

RE: thanks for advice about running lights But

Are you asking how to hook up your running lights? If so then not to worry. It is just a two wire system and no matter how you hook the two wires on the lights to the two trailer wires it will work.

RE: Finding Diesel - Big Spring, TX to Carlsbad, NM

You can stop in any town, even small towns, and find a station that carries diesel. Diesel is found everywhere!

RE: Calling all tire experts

An old but informative article Separation Anxiety From personal experiece I totally disagree with that article that states you should run only ST tires on your fifth wheel. I had gobs of trouble with ST tires, but when I switched to Michelin LT (xps ribbed) tires all my troubles went away. I used to have at least one ST tire fail every year. In fact, in a period of six years I had eight ST tires fail. I switched to the LT tires in 2004 and have put 29,000 miles on them with not one problem. With the ST tires I had a failure on the average of every 2,500 miles. And, I find that my fiver is more stable with the LT tires.

RE: Does Your State Have A Move Over Law???

I totally agree with that law, but I still many an idiot who does not move over or slow down for a parked law or emergency vehicle. How do you legislate against idiots.

RE: Calling all tire experts

As long as the tires will fit I see no problems at all. In fact, going from Marathon's to Michelin's, in my opinion, is a GREAT improvment in safety and peace of mind. I had horrendous problems with Marathon's on our fifth wheels, but when I put Michelins on my fiver several years ago I have not had a single problem. In fact, all my vehicles, two autos, a truck and our fifth wheel trailer, are now running on Michelin tires.

RE: Where have all the trees gone??

My two cents worth. I don't know why those who are talking about going back to nature even stop at a commercial park. Staying in a commercial park is like parking in cow stalls with everyone lined up right next to each other with showers and pools and and. Now, I don't consider that being in nature. So why complain about those who watch TV.

What California is experiencing now will soon be felt by the whole country of Washington doesn't get some fiscal responsibility. We only need to look to California to see our fate.

RE: Finding Fuel on the Back Roads.

I have driven all over United States, Canada and to Alaska. I used to carry a six gal can of diesel, but found I never used it as there are diesel pumps everywhere. Most towns, even small towns, have a diesel pump at a fuel station. If you are in doubt just ask at a locat business. Sometimes the diesel pump is a out in back of the station. I was glad to get rid of the messy diesel can in my truck bed.

RE: HD TV without HD

I agree try the local stations with your roof antenna. There are a lot more local stations now as they can get more channels on the air with digital. We have directv HD at home, but we get our local channels with our home roof antenna and we watch them as much anymore as Directv. I find the over the air HD programs are more crisp looking than the HD I get with my directv HD dish.

RE: Carriage doesn't compete with Newmar, Excel

We have had two fifth wheels, both were Carriage products. Our first was a 1993 Carri Lite and our second was a Cameo. I can't comment on other products as I have only owned these fiver made my Carriage, but we put lots of miles on the CarriLite and even more on the our Cameo. Our Cameo now has almost 70,000 miles and it is still structurally sound with a solid interior. I followed the link above to the Carriage warranty statement and the only thing that I had to quibble with it is that they say Carriage products are a solid investment. No RV is an investment. All RV's depreciate rapidly. You have to think it as an investment in recreation I guess. And, if you don't enjoy it by all means don't buy one.

RE: TAMPA area campground costs

About the only way to keep down your campground cost is to stay in the county ans state parkds and move very two weeks. Hillsborough county (the county where Bullfrog is located) has many reasonable and nice parks, but you can only stay two weeks and then have to move.
