RE: Anyone with Dual Exhaust on Durmax

I don't see any benefit to duals on the Dmax, you can't run true duals anyway since it's a single turbo. That means you'd do a Y-pipe and run dual pipes off that, which would sound pretty much the same but have more piping, be more expensive, and more complex.
I'd stick with a quality single 4" setup myself.

RE: Route from Caborca to Puerto Penasco (El Golfo)

If it makes any difference, El Golfo is about a 250 mile drive from Puero Penasco with no well-traveled, direct route between them as far as I know. PP is about 110 miles from Caborca. El Golfo and PP are not the same place. Not sure if implying that was intentional or not, but that's how I read it. :)
We hope to make it down to El Golfo sometime this year!

RE: Easy ways to improve insulation during winter camping?

I may enclose the underbelly some more at some point, but after spending a little more than 2 weeks and 3,000 miles in and with our new TT, I was really worrying for no reason.
Rain, snow, cold nights in CA, OR and WA...we were comfy and warm as could be. In fact, we didn't even use up one 30# LP bottle. The only problems we had with freezing were the faucet and hose at one park. No problems with lines or tanks freezing and the furnace was really only used to do the initial warm-up once we parked.
The space heaters worked great, kept the temp inside the trailer right around 65-68 degrees all night and I didn't even bother with the vent covers. The floor wasn't even freezing in the morning.
The TT continues to impress me, especially for being a "low-end" brand.
Happy new year, everyone! :)

RE: photo printers/ all in one

EDIT: Oops, guess I came in just a little late. Oh well, maybe this info will be useful to someone else searching. Enjoy the HP!
I have a Canon PIXMA MP610 that has 5 separate ink cartridges, they run about $15 each. I love this printer, ended up paying $129 for it a year or so ago.
They have the PIXMA MP640 and MP560 now, both of which have wireless connectivity. The MP640 seems to have the same print resolution as my MP610, which is great. Photos come out looking like they were done by a professional.
Prior to this Canon I had an HP PhotoSmart printer. The ink cost killed me, the price of the Canon and ink cartridges at $15/ea plus the excellent print quality and general functionality have me sold, I'd buy another Canon in a heartbeat.
do you find that you have to replace one color cartridge a lot more often than others? if not does your $75 worth of cartridges really end up cheaper than using the $30 multiple color ones?
bumpy
I have to replace the large black one more often than the rest, I guess that's why it's the large one. :) There are two different black tanks, the large pigment black tank and a smaller black tank, plus 3 color tanks. Your mileage will vary depending on how much and what you print, but it has worked out well. I do have one color run out before the rest so I don't have to replace $45 worth of color tanks at the same time, which would end up more expensive than the $30 multi-color cart as you mention.
I haven't run into any issue with the tank clogging or drying out before it was used up, either. Everything's worked like a charm.

RE: Knights of the road my a@%

The way I see it, the bigger vehicle should be doing their best to merge properly BUT the smaller vehicles should yield if circumstances dictate there's no other choice.
If I'm getting on the freeway, whether I'm towing or not, I do my best to merge without disrupting the flow on the freeway. If I'm towing and am unable to get up to speed, I would hope people in smaller vehicles would have the decency to make some room for me. Likewise, if it's between me and a semi, whether I'm towing or not, I'll make sure they have the room they need.
Ultimately, my biggest complaint has to do with all the oblivious drivers in their cars/trucks/SUVs merging onto the freeway without even looking at the lane they're merging into until it's too late, then they get a big surprise when they look over.
Just the other day someone was "merging" onto the freeway in their SUV, they were fully ahead of me and when the driver looked over and saw me, not even gaining on them, what did they do? Hit their brakes and SLOWED DOWN, causing me to hit my brakes while they freaked out and decided to drive on the shoulder and merge behind me. Common sense is really lacking, had they just pressed a little harder on the go pedal and actually got up to speed it would've fine. I don't drive more than 55-60mph, people in cars can easily get up to speed before the end of the on-ramp but it seems they'd rather merge at 35-40mph and then get up to speed once actually on the freeway. Sigh.
Always be on the lookout for the other guy! :)

RE: tandem axle leveling

So which is it? Either your tires are immune from exspansion and contraction OR your Rotochocks are.
AND if there is a need to check the chocks then that means that they could fail to keep the TT from rolling. I do not recommend a system that could fail.
Waking up in the middle of the night from my TT rolling off of leveling blocks is NOT my idea of a good time.
You don't get it, but that's ok. You seem to think it's black and white, that even a fraction of a percentage of contraction will cause chocks to become loose.
If the x-chocks are applying 100psi against the tires and the tires contract, do you think it just goes from 100psi down to 0psi and there's no in between? Of course not. With more than enough pressure applied there will STILL be enough pressure applied to keep the tires locked even after contraction. The wedge-type blocks require more travel to apply the same amount of pressure, so contraction has a much more pronounced effect with them.
We can debate this all night long, but there's no point. I know how they work and how they perform. You can choose to not believe me if you wish, that's fine. It doesn't make my experience any less real.
Happy holidays! :)

RE: Vortec 8.1 Oil pressure????

I don't use Fram filters for a number of reasons, mostly due to poor construction (Glued cardboard end-caps that can separate and leaky anti-drainback valves), but I'll add this to the list. Thanks for the info!
Hard to go wrong with Napa/WIX.
Don't disagree with the Napa filters, but the issue of cardboard endcaps on Fram filters is a red herring . After all, the cardboard is glued to the paper filter media. The glue join between cardboard and paper is likely stronger than paper to metal.
I wouldn't be so sure, with the Fram cardboard endcaps it's gluing the flat surface of the cardboard onto the end of the media. The metal endcaps are cupped so the entire end of the media is submerged in the adhesive, then when installed into the filter there are springs that keep everything pressed together, so even if something where to fail with the adhesive I don't see how it would have much, if any, effect.
The other issue with the cardboard is that it can become oil-soaked and cause the glue to separate from the cardboard, there's no "cup" to it so with enough pressure it would be fairly easy for the oil to go between the media and cardboard and not be filtered. Can't soak metal with oil.
I don't think anyone considers the cardboard endcaps to be an advantage, if it were then you'd be seeing it on the more expensive filters instead of just on the very cheap Fram.
The anti-drain back valves are only an issue if your filter isn't mounted vertically and if you're using the cheapest Fram filter. Their higher priced filters have better anti-drain back valves.
I've had issues with the filter draining down overnight with a filter that was horizontal. Granted, it's not going to drain down all the way being horizontal but I've found it to be an issue with any filter mounted horizontally at the minimum, anything more vertical and it just drains more oil.
Less common, but has happened, is the can leaking or completely coming off at the rolled seam on the base. This can happen with just about any filter, but in the cases I've seen it's been Fram that's had this problem.
Oil filters are cheap, even for the "expensive" ones. An extra $5 max per oil change is cheap insurance, IMO. Not worth the risk of using a Fram. :)

RE: tandem axle leveling

I never disputed that a tire expands or contracts, did I? ;) If you put the chock in tight enough (I'm not saying wrench on it, but tighten it a reasonable amount) then it will still be tight after the air in the tire cools. The X-chock is able to put quite a bit more force against the tire then the simple home-made wedges, so actually loosening does have to do with the type of chocks.
In any case, the moral of the story is check your chocks regardless of type.
NO, but you do seem to infer that the Rotochocks are somehow immune to the effects of exspansion and contraction.
I used to use another brand, and the instructions said NOT to use them as wheel chocks, only for stabilization.... For this very reason,
And yes, checking is nice. But if you find them loose, it may already be too late:E
I use a 1/2" drive rachet, and I DO wrench on it. Still, if the tire is hot enough, and the nightime tempertures cold enough, it WILL LOOSEN! I seriously doubt that the rotochocks put more pressure on the tires than I do with my setup. It is as tight as I would want to go as it almost seems TOO tight.
Moderator edit to remove multiple quotes.
Never said immune either, but unless you've used one I guess you won't understand how it works differently than the home-made wedges or similar. With those you're fighting tire friction to push the wedges down between the tires, the x-chock and similar spread out just like a scissor jack. You CAN put them on too tight and do damage, in order for one of these to become loose due to tire/air cooling the tire size or pressure would have to be reduced by quite a bit.
They aren't simply for stabilization either.
I've checked the tightness multiple times, each time they're just as tight as when I put them in. I appreciate your opinion and reminding people of the need to check their chocks, but I'll take real-world first-hand experience over theory and opinion when it comes to how these work. ;) So far my experience and those of everyone I've seen that has them has been the same. They're great!

RE: tandem axle leveling

I also use the homemade type chocks. They DO loosen! It's simple physics. A hot tire expands and a cold tire contracts. It has nothing to do with the type of chock.
Usually I have a hole dug for at least one tire, so the only harm is a little wiggle in the TT. It can't fall out of the hole.:B
Checking the chocks MIGHT work. Or you MIGHT find out when it falls off the leveling boards/blocks:E. Hopefully you catch it before it happens.;)

RE: tandem axle leveling

Then you'll find the bigger problem of how chock the tires on top of a slippery plastic block.
I have a pair of these. :)
BAL X-Chock
I also carry 3 sets of 10 blocks. Usually end up using 8-10 to level under 2 tires, the I usually use some for the stabilizers if needed. At least one under each to keep the feet from sinking into soft ground.
I find the between the tire chocks loosen as the tires cool. A real chore to retighten if they are under the slide out. Perhaps the Bal-X chocks do not have this problem, but I would want to be very sure. I learned about chocks loosening the hard way. Luckily the tongue jack digging into very soft ground stopped us.
I haven't had any issues with the BAL X-Chock loosening, every time I've removed them they've been nice and tight, but thanks for the heads-up. I'll remember to check them after having been parked for a while just to make sure. Better safe than sorry! :)

RE: 2010 Ram HD w/6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel

Just found a dealer with some pics of a '10 Ram 3500 Laramie 6.7L LB.......$76,850CAN:E
Nice looking BEAST!!
That's an awesome looking truck. I wonder what that would cost in USD?
That would be 71,835.00 US, hell of a deal.. That can't be right, if it is correct Dodge is a joke.
"Blame Canada." Buying vehicles in the US has always been cheaper, the pricing in Canada hasn't changed to reflect how much the exchange rate has changed.
I had a couple come down from Canada to southern CA to buy a vehicle from me a couple of years ago because it was that much cheaper, including travel, than buying the same vehicle locally.

RE: Brand new Raptor, FIreplace problems...

I have the same model Raptor your do and mine did not come with a fireplace remote control. When I questioned the dealer, he called the factory and was told it did not come with a remote. Not really a big issue but just one of those little things that add up. At least my heater works.
Ray
Ray, You SHOULD NOT SETTLE for anything less! If you look at the brocure, and the Raptor website, you will clearly see a remote control in a hand pointed right at the fireplace and some text claiming the fireplace remot control.
FWIW, the 2010 Raptor brochure doesn't show this or mention a remote for the fireplace. The picture is from the 2009 Raptor brochure. :( The 2010 Raptor brochure says there's a fireplace and shows a picture of it but there's no mention of a remote.
I stand to be corrected, the Website definitely says the Fireplace has a remote control, not the brocure. IMHO, Websites these days are just as good as a product brocure. The brocure does state "Compromise Nothing" and I didn't. FWIW, the Website was enough to sway the manufacturer's decision and dealers decision to replace my fireplace with one that has a remote control. Why would a 2010 brocure show a 2009 fireplace?
http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/42411/2282691150011772363S600x600Q85.jpg
I'm glad to hear you got it all sorted out after some frustrating hassles.
That picture is not the brochure (Nor is the gallery section of the website), unfortunately that's an old image from MY2009 in their "gallery". There's a "Brochures" button along the top nav bar where you can download the 2009 and 2010 brochures in PDF format. Reviewing both, the image you're showing is from the 2009 brochure. The fireplace pic in the 2010 brochure is a completely different picture.
I ran into some similar issues recently trying to find 2010 model info for our TT, some of it has been updated on the website while some hasn't. The interior color selections are for 2009 but the floorplans are 2010. The colors and patterns are both different in name and color for 2010.
Here's the image from the 2010 brochure.

RE: Odd gear ratios??

According to Ford specs the 3.31 gears have the same tow rating as 3.55 gears and both are only available on SRW trucks. DRW have 3.73 at a minimum and have higher tow ratings and GCVWRs. With the TorqShift 5-speed trans the mfrs can get away with higher gearing for better freeway mpg and make up for it with lower gearing in the trans at the lower gears.
I don't believe CAFE requirements apply to 3/4-ton and up trucks, notice the lack of EPA fuel mileage ratings on the window sticker.

RE: Stop e-mail large file downloads

In my version of Outlook (2008), the message size limit can be changed by going to...
Tools > Options > Mail Setup tab > Send/Receive... button
Then select which group you want to edit if there's more than one. For me, it's "All Accounts". Then click "Edit..."
In the next window you can mark the checkbox for "Download only headers for items larger than" and then enter a size limit.
Hope this helps, I'm pretty sure the older versions of Outlook work similarly.

Wow, the nerve of someone doing something you don't agree with on property that doesn't belong to you in a way that doesn't have any impact on you.
What's next, complaining about a stranger eating a Big Mac because it doesn't fit into YOUR diet? ;) I'm sure the manager of the Wal-Mart would have taken care of it if he or she had an issue with it.
