RE: Three tent Hybrid

If I was looking to do it again, and had the cash, we would have a three bunk unit.

Verona in Spring

Was hoping I would see a get together for Turning Stone in May. Had a good time in less than perfect weather last year.

RE: Cabin fever

And the snow is still melting on top of our HTT. When it's all gone, I'll remove the cover, dewinterize the HTT and get it ready for our first camping trip............CAN'T WAIT !!!!!
That makes it sound like you think snow is done in Maine? Bet we get 1 or 2 more good snows this season, but was 50 today so soon just not soon enough.

RE: Cabin fever

Cabin fever drives me to ground reconnaissance of likely campgrounds. A day on the road plus tramping thru some of the fields is good for me. Less cost than a ticket to a basketball game!
-- Chuck
I do that in the spring and late fall too. I use a powerwheelchair for mobility so have to wait until snow is gone, but have a few places I have never camped I want to check out. This is extra important for me because I need to see the grade and drainage of a possiable campsite first. A 250# wheelchair will make a real mess in the mud. I keep a book and have added photos along with site numbers, how far to showers, obsticals for the chair, good with kids or without, ect. Love to spend the day adding parks to this book.

Cabin fever

I found a way to ease my cabin fever a bit today. We booked several camping trips today. Some with our children and a couple short trips without. All here in New York but now I feel much more ready to get out and camp. Hurry up Spring.

RE: Wrapping Meat to freeze?

I am a Foodsaver user so +1 on that. Camping with coolers I also liked that thawing meat didn't leak into everything else in the cooler.

RE: How many nights have you camped?

See my signature .. you can't say I don't play with my toys. 6 of those were in "camp driveway" and my g/f's yard between trips with her. We now have a house together and 6 kids between us, so guess next year will be less. Lots to do with an old house.
On the plus side we have a big yard with corn fields on 3 sides and a fire pit, so yard camping is pretty nice here.

RE: Steps on Coachmen Freelander

It might be an option to make a step. I made one for my TT that is wider and more solid. It rides inside the door when in travel. I have mobility problems and having even rise and deeper tread makes it much easier.

RE: When Do You Deep Fry Your Turkey?

Will add my comments too. I love the taste of a water smoked bird with light pecan smoke over deep fried and no oil. This year I did 2 birds one butterflied (spackcocked) and one smoked. Both were brined for 10 hrs before.

RE: Pickled Eggs

We make 4-6 dozen every year at our hunting camp, never kept them anyplace but on the counter. We do add beet juice and sliced hot peppers that pick up the pickled taste if you like it hotter. The beet juice lets you know how pickled they are the dye will make them pink, when it get all the way to the yolk they are as good as they will get.
We keep them out for up to two weeks, btw. Think I need to make some more of these.

RE: Tucked away for the season

Ground reconnaissance, hum.....we just call it "driving around looking", but this sounds much more effective.
I love that term..so much better than he's off wandering the campground. From now on "Dear I have to go do some ground reconnaissance for our next camping trip.

RE: Tucked away for the season

I will winterize next month but our HTT is always on stand by for a spontanious weekend outing. Some of our best and most memorable camping weekends have been during the winter. But then we do not live where you do. Hang in there. It is a great time to plan next years outings.
Does it get cold enough there that you need anti-freeze in everything? I have thought about using mine (just not using the water) later in the season. One problem is that all the area campgrounds are closed for the season.

RE: Could I use a mini school bus as a tow vehicle?

I pull my 21 foot HTT and a lot of gear and 2 power wheelchairs and my short bus drives great. I don't go much over 65mph just don't see the need pulling the camper.
If my TT was bigger I would use WD hitch but don't see the need with my set up now.

RE: First smoke advice

One tip no one added is use good wood or briquets and don't use any starter fluids on them...yuck..a chimmny type starter would be my choice.. also if using it for camping I recommend the mod of mounting the legs on the outside and raising the fire pan up to tend the fire by lifting the whole smoker up.

RE: Older Ford tranny question

Look in your manual. My 4 speed with OD tows fine in OD. My manual specifically says I can tow in OD.
Err thanks but no such thing as a manual for a 13 year old school bus, sorry.
