RE: Thinking of Nitto Terra Grapplers for Tow Vehicle

Been running on them on the F250 for about 40K miles and there's a lot of thread of left.

RE: '99 7.3L - what to look for?

The PSD badge location is not always a for sure way to tell if it's an early or late PSD. I always thought this until I posted the same post as robwen and was corrected on TDS. In most cases it's true but not always.
I have three of them. Two are late 99's and the other is a 00 but basicly the three are the exact same as far as motors and tranys.
Common problems are what's already been posted as well as glow plug relay, glow plugs, o-rings at the fuel filter seperator and o-rings at the hpop (high pressure oil pump). All of which can be done by most owners capable of doing an oil change.
Currently the mileage on the three are,
F250-276K
F350-176K
Excursion-212K
Only the F250 has had to do tranny work to it. At 83K the original tranny failed and at 125K a torque convertor failed (my fault). The $2K Ford rebuilt lasted 169K miles. The truck has had a life tougher than most F350 DRW's. Pulls the heavy dump trailers and plows.
Take the advise of others and have a good diesel mechanic look it over. Most charge $100 for the service but some may be more or less. I wished I'd had a mechanic look over the 120K mile F350 when I bought it because it needed a bunch of stuff right away. The truck was priced $5K lower than most with the miles though.

RE: Tundra or 1 Ton Dually? Tundra??!!

I don't know if it's just me or not but when it's time to pull one of the heavily loaded dump trailers I ONLY want to use the F350 dually.
The Excursion and F250 pull the trailers just fine don't get me wrong but when the trailer is fully loaded to 15K+ pounds the feeling in my body is a lot better in the seat of the dually.
Used to only use the F250 and talk about a lot of white knuckle drives!!! The DRW gets bad fuel mileage compared to the other two so I try to use that mainly for towing.

RE: 2011 Ford Excursion

The funny thing is IF Ford did start making the Excursion again you wouldn't know unless some one told you. Ford seemed afraid to advertise the Excursion when they made them.
Your friend must have only an extra $100,000 laying around?
Sounds like the home owner today I met. Paid $800K for a house to tear it down and build a $1,000,000 house in it's place. Funny this is they drove very modest vehicles. The lot is on the most coveted lake in the state!

RE: Not so fixed it seems

I think a lot of the issues that caused wrecks were by individuals that couldn't handle the sitution well.
When I was 16 my dad had me pull out a car onto the street from a driveway to get ready to load it onto a trailer. The car was sitting in the guys garage for several years and was to be used as a low budget race car. What we didn't realize was it had no brakes! First tried brakes with no luck then tried parking brake again with no luck. My next thought was throw the shifter (auto) into park but that didn't happen it seemed stuck into drive. Finaly after going several blocks (in Saint Paul, MN!) was able to find a stretch of no parked cars and ran her along the curb to stop her.
Got to say it was one of the scariest things in my life. My dad figured I'd gone about 7 blocks in all. It was a highly dense populated area. The amazing thing was another block would have been all downhill for a while! Recall circling a few blocks that seemed flat and in my panic recall hitting the gas a couple times so speeds could have been up to 15-20 mph or more. At the time only had my drivers license for a couple months!
A while back remember a story of a woman in a BMW 7 series who wrapped her car around a tree with a couple kids on board. At least one of the occupants died and her defense was that the car sped up to 80+mph on it's own. Reports showed of the some 2 million BMW's in the US this wasn't very plausible so she got sentenced for vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to the big house.

RE: Let the fun begin, Part 2

Hope that fixed your problem. IMO, way to much money to spend on a pick to leave you stranded.
I had to do a PCM on the F250 at 225K miles. It was out of a junk yard truck. Recently had to replace that one at 275K miles. Took the one out of the F350/175K miles and put a donor PCM in it for $150 shipped!
The first PCM failure made the SES come on and the truck ran really bad. Second PCM failure was cold start issues and when it did start it would lope a bunch until it go warm.
Sort of nice to have the 276K mile truck fire right up not plugged in at -20 again. It's like a new truck again!!!

RE: Head scratching going on - Fords SD payload numbers

A lot of posts have been made from owners of F450's having a hard time finding an insurance company that will insure there new pick up. Perhaps this is what's lead to low number of F450 sales leading Ford to cut some of the "nice" options out of them.
Keep in mind this is the same company that killed one of the greatest SUV's ever. How many other SUV's are out there that weigh 4 tons, can carry up to 9 passengers, have a 44 gallon fuel tank, diesel motor, real 4x4, and still get up to 20 mpg? Even though Ford said it made about $10K per unit they had to kill it off.

RE: Stuck in 4x4 low

Had this happen on a F150 once. The truck had 35.5K miles on it and it was something wrong with the electronics in the 4x4. What could have caused the failure though was an inch of ice on the entire underside.
Dealership paid for the repair truck was traded 3k miles later.

RE: $1.4B Loan to Help Nissan

Anybody see the documentery "Who killed the electric car"???
GM tried to make an electric car many years ago and had all the technology to do so.
What I found most interesting is who bought the pattents to the battery technology that would have made a long range electric car feasible.
Who even knows if the Volt will go into production and it's government owned!!!

RE: Why the low F450 GVWR?

An early report from Ford on the 11 F450 was that it was redesigned to be 600 pounds lighter, go faster, and get better fuel mileage than the previous F450.
A lot of posts on the tds were of owners with the F450's complaining about horrible fuel mileage with the 6.4. They could have gotten the early ones with 4.88's.
Wonder what type of fuel mielage the new motor will get? The 6.4's were known to get the lowest out of the big three.

RE: Step Bars

I put Westin on the 99 F150 and every time getting into the truck would hit my foot on the truck.
Bought the 99 F250 used with MAAP s.s. nerf bars and the first thing I liked about them was how far they stuck out from the truck. They are easy to stand on getting the ladders of the truck and best this is they've been on the truck for over 8 years and are still in very good condition. Looked at them before buying the Westins for the old truck and they are a lot more money but now know why they cost more.
Guessing they've been on the truck right after purchase and I bought the truck with them on it at 40K miles currently got 276K miles on her.

RE: How much should it cost to replace an engine?

I've had a good luck with a $750 junk yard 5.8 V8 for my wifes old 95 Bronco. We paid a mechanic $500 to do the swap and another $200 in parts.
My brothers g-friend has not been so lucky with junk yard motors. She's got one of them I6 aluminum Trailblazer motors and the first one failed at 120K miles. The junk yard motor failed 40K miles later (under 100K on motor at time of failure), and the third junk yard motor failed 20K miles after that. To top things off the bell housing was recently replaced due to being cracked. The saddest this is she still owes on it!
I have heard only bad things about Jasper rebuilds for Ford Super Duties running Powerstrokes.
My luck with a Ford rebuild was a auto tranny for the F250 which was $2K and got 169K miles out of it.

RE: F350 front seats

Nice leather jump seats go for $300+ on Ebay. You will have to detach the two front seats to replace the jump seat as they share the same bolt.
My wife likes the heated seats in her BWM a lot more than the Excursion. Funny thing is both are same year the X and BMW are both fully loaded but the strange thing about the BMW is it's only got 3 wiper settings.

RE: Big tow capacity on the cheap

It would be tough to source a 99+ Super Duty in your budget but you could find some decent 94-97's.
A V10 Ford would work good too.
Good Luck!!!

RE: F350 front seats

You may want to find a nice set of front seats and just leave them in there. Unless you get seats from the exact same year as your truck the plug to run the power will more than likely be different as was the case with mine.

RE: F350 front seats

I found a very nice set of power heated Lariat front seats on Craigslist for a mere $217. Had to drive about an hour to get them. On Ebay the seats in the same condition were going for about a grand plus shipping.
You could try Craigslist, Ebay, and junk yards. Most big junk yards are tied together so you can request a search for a specific part.
My guess is you have a permanant center counsil which does not flip up into a seat? My Excursion is this way. Nice bucket seats but only two up front.
If you have an older Ford (99-02/03) the seat belts are mounted to the top. The newer style seats have the seat belt mounted in the seat. I was able to make a swap like with with no real issues in the F250. You will have holes in the headliner but they can be plugged, you have to be creative thought! To my knowledge most all Ford Super Duty/Excursions interchange, but could be wrong. I know the bolt pattern is the same in my Excursion, F250 x-cab, and F350 crew cab.
Good Luck!!!

RE: Ford Excursion

They don't have the most cargo payload capacity and the tounge weight is limited compared to a 3/4 ton pick up. Don't have the hard numbers in front of me. More than likely others will post that.
It's sort of like a 3/4 ton but Ford installed softer leafs and shocks on the Excursions to soften up the ride a bit. The receiever hitch is also rated for less weight than the Super Duty's. You can install 1 ton leafs and better shocks, rear sway bar, air bags which would all help it tow really good. One thing that's though however is changing the reciever out for a stronger one.
I've towed with my diesel Excursion several times and won't go into specifics but can say it can and will tow quite a bit more weight than what Ford rated it for. The drivetrain is that of a Super Duty so there's plenty of power pulling even large trailers.
I feel the Excursion when mated with 4x4 and the famous 7.3 Powerstroke V8 makes for one if not the best suv tow vehicles around. Of course Ford killed it after 2005 MY.
Mine has 211K miles and runs like new. Never touched the motor or tranny.

BTW, there are no trolls on this thread, all posters are senior members. If the thread was started by a new member that's one thing.
Again, to the OP, that's one nice rig you got there. Don't even want to guess what something like that would set a guy back. Bet it's more than my rental house! Bet you could have got a parking lot full of Tundra's for that.

RE: Bet you'll be able to get a cheap toad soon

That's a very interesting read. Thanks for posting that gouda. We're in the same boat that is not knowing how to post with the line under it that brings you right to the site. I'm too afriad to be called an ignorant troll so won't bother posting a link on this site.
The things companies and people do to save a buck. Of course some things can and will catch up with you even if you are the worlds largest auto manufacturer.
Your right it will be a very interesting week or two for Toyota. A friend of mine works as a Lexus service writer and says things are not going well there. Keep telling him the Lexus lock washers should keep all the Toyota bolts in place!
BTW, nice rig!!!
Also Gooseneck, easy for you to say, you own one of the best built longest lasting vehicles on the road!!!
