RE: Brainstorming Custom TC build

How about a long straw on the low expansion foam to fill the tubes. Maybe some 1/8 in foam tape between the al tubes and the inside panels to break the conductivity. Find a commercial spray foam insulator and have them spray it for you. I had it done to my house , really stiffens it up. R 10 per inch for the stuff I got , Carolina Foam. How about skin like a cargo trailer and glue it to the framework. Get an aluminum roof and double seam it to the top of the side aluminum . Take a look at how semi-trailer roofs are done. You can get the roof from a semi-trailer shop. You might be able to get a piece big enough from a repair. Normally when damaged they replace the whole roof as 1 piece, you might be able to buy the removed piece cheap. Take a look at how reefer trailers are built. Good luck

RE: more ignition hot wire for solenoid

check it at the 7 pin connector should be 12 volts only with key on. This should appear in the camper harness with the tail lights. I mounted the relay in the camper instead of under the truck hood. The under hood heat can cause these power relays to fail. My camper had the wire for the 12 volt hot just hanging loose in the compartment with the batteries.

RE: need ignition wire for my solenoid for new charging system

I used the trailer hot from the seven pin ,it is only hot when ignition is on. I put the relay in the camper near the battery. The cable from the truck runs under the hood, tied to the frame and comes up between the cab and bed. I put a connector there to separate from the truck . I ran 2 #10 wires from the positive battery post on the truck battery ,through a 40 amp fuse, in flex conduit , to the camper connector. I used a 20 amp 120 volt cord cap and plug to disconnect. 1 wire to each blade. It has worked fine.I then ran the wires from the cord plug into the battery box area and connected to 1 big lug of the solenoid relay. the other big lug goes to the positive battery post. 1 small lug goes to ground.the other small lug goes to the camper connector wiring for the trailer hot wire.I also put a bypass switch in the 12 volt line to isolate the truck feed if needed. If you wanted you could wire in a 12 volt hot to the solenoid feed wire to power the relay without the truck running. This would let you draw from truck batteries while stopped .I also put a disconnect switch in the circuit between the batteries and the 12 volt loads, to be able to isolate the batteries from the converter. I use a battery tender to maintain float voltage ,instead of the not smart converter I have. Getting the parts together to do our 5th wheel the same way.

RE: Things to look for when buying used truck camper?

check under cushions and mattress for signs of a leak.Check around wings and inside compartments for water damage. When I was shopping for one I found several that had been setting in water and had rot on bottom, must have been holding water in front of truck bed. Most 8 foot campers with a shower are real cramped for space. As others have stated no shower usually means no water heater. Also sink drains to ground through garden hose drain. Water heater can be done with portable propane instant heater, as this is what we use.Still lets you have hot water in sink for washing dishes or shaving , or wash cloth baths. Couple of hundred bucks online , $30 for an outside shower enclosure if there is an outside shower. Ours did not have one but easily installed for $50 .If metal covered skin, look for bulges or popped fasteners, signs of shifting walls or dropped damage. Be cautious of jacks that look to have been torn off, and repaired. This might have weakened frame or caused cracks. Make sure the jacks work freely, very expensive to replace if messed up. Very important to make sure you get a camper that your truck can handle. It costs a lot to add air bags, springs ,sway bars and other things to modify a 3/4 ton truck to be able to SAFELY haul an over weight camper. You can spend days researching the comments on this board about this subject! Think about the future when you are shopping , I bought a used truck camper last year, already upgraded to a 5th wheel, just not enough room for us in 8.5 foot when confined due to weather. Also an other thing to think about is size of people using the camper. I'm 6'4" 230lbs. There is not much room in the toilet closet if you know what I mean. Our TC was fine for a couple of nights , but storage of weeks of food and clothes takes up lots of space.

RE: Smoked brisket

I always marinate mine for a couple of days in a liquid steak marinade. I use the seal-a-meal and vacuum out the air. it seams to help force it into the fibers of the meat better. Then I dry it good with paper towels and put on the rub.Sear it on hot fire for a couple of minutes ,then Smoke it in-direct heat with apple wood for about 12-15 hrs . After about 4-5 hours wrap in foil , always turns out tender Jeff

RE: Being stealthy when boondocking

I made my black out shades from some cheap Walmart roller window shades cut to fit and held on with adhesive back velcro strips. Small strips of the fuzzy part of the velcro stuck on the window frames Tthe black outs seal tight to the frames. Easy to roll up and tie up with a small velcro tie string.I even made a cover for the vent in the bunk to block out the light from above.

RE: Water from lakes and creeks

People all over the country use lake water for non-potable use, but not for drinking. There are a lot who have cisterns for storing water collected from roof drains. These are fine for showering , flushing, dog washing and animal watering, but not advised for drinking or dish rinsing. I once bought a house with a cistern and knew nothing about water treating. The first night we moved in and drank the water , I have never been so sick in my life. I called the county health inspector to come and check the water, he said it was terrible, DO NOT DRINK. That I would have to pump out 10000 gals water and rinse the tank with bleach solution have new water hauled in and retest.,I called my dad in a panic , didn't have the cash for all this stuff. He came by with a gallon of clorox , a big box of baking soda and a sump pump. And a six pack. Put pump in cistern and started circulating water , poured in bleach baking soda , drank six pack and said call the health inspector back. The next day the guy retested the water and said "boy you really cleaned that out fast, that water is perfect". So yes you can drink lake water, if treated. Our local tap water comes from a lake, and it is treated with all kinds of chemicals to make it sanitary.

RE: Wrapping Meat to freeze?

The locker plant that processes our beef uses vacuum sealing for all the meat. I just cooked a round steak from 2 years ago with no freezer burn . The vacuum seal bags also let you defrost in a sink or tub ow water in just a few minutes. Check with a local meat packer to get your meat from them.

RE: Help - another lost new guy

How about putting the Alaskan on a trailer chassis and using as TT until cash comes along for new rig? You could put it on a gooseneck trailer and not have all the problems of a light truck amd a bumper pull. Look around on Craigs list and find a good used trailer and have a welding shop make it the length you need.

RE: Boliy pro 3600si generator

Sounds just like mine did over the weekend when I ran it to excercise it. I t really sputtered for a few seconds until it warmed up a bit, or it just had not fully filled the carb with gas . I usually turn off gas valve and let it run dry, till it sputters, then turn it off. So far I'm really happy with it. I have it mounted on the back porch I built, setting on a couple of rubber mats to absorb vibrations a bit. have strapped down with a couple of ratchet straps for transporting. With exhaust pointing away from truck , you can hardly hear it inside with 1500 watt heater load on it. Taking a trip to Florida in a few weeks, we'll see how it does then under a longer run.

RE: Laptop Traveling Software?

DeLorme street atlas is how we roll. The lt40 device to connect to the laptop is the best we have found so far. Have used it to locate Walmarts before when needed an emergency prescription filled. The GPS radar search allows you to find places of interest near your route. Listed addresses and telephone numbers for businesses ,hotels, campgrounds, fuel stops, and other interesting places.Have found it to be pretty accurate, not perfect, but close enough most times. We use a 200 watt inverter in the power port . The Lt-40 powers from a USB port on the pc. We are currently using an Acer 11 netbook sized laptop. Also play music from Windows media into truck stereo , sure beats carrying a bunch of CD's. We have an Altell air card that has not let us down either. We have used it many times to locate a campground on the street atlas program, then go online to book a spot.

RE: Need help with my air conditioner

Get a volt meter and check for correct voltage at the compressor terminals. If no voltage at compressor then check thermostat, start relay, capacitors. Not uncommon to find terminals burnt off at compressor. Sometimes they can be repaired with new wire terminals if the compressor is not destroyed.could be overload is bad or burned up. Might have a freeze switch bad .
