RE: Big Bend NP Texas

Is it too hot to visit in the summer?
I'm sure it gets very hot. We were there early March last year. The temperature in Rio Grande Village got up to 97-98 degrees. Up in the basin it was 10-15 degrees cooler.

You might try contacting Trailer Life magazine's RV Action Line. They seem to have quite a bit of influence in matters of this type. It is also free.

RE: FYI - visiting Great Smoky Mountains NP

Which tool stores do you go to? I haven't been up there in a while. I went to Smoky Mtn Knife Works several times, but its not really in Pigeon Forge.

I don't remember the names. The best one is across the street from the Old Time Pottery store across the river from the main drag. The other is in the outlet mall with the red roofs.
There is also one now out by the Smoky Mtn Knife Works. I don't go in the knife works anymore. I have more knives than I will ever use up.

RE: FYI - visiting Great Smoky Mountains NP

...
In the summer, its 5 or 6 miles of trafic gridlock. The rest of the year, it isn't too bad. We avoid it as much as possible. Tourist Trap does not begin to describe Pigeon Forge. I would rather be water boarded at Wall Drug than drive from Sevierville, thru Pigeon Forge to the Gatlinburg entrance of the Smokys on a 4th of July weekend.
Brad
Yeah, I pretty much agree. There is a couple of pretty cool tool stores I always hit while the wife is checking out her stores. Calhouns also serves pretty good food.

RE: drive thru "Crazy Woman Canyon" in Wyoming ?

I would like to drive thru Crazy Woman Canyon in Wyoming with my rig (3500 GM dually with 990 Artic Fox on board). Have any of you made this drive with your camper on the truck? The Forestry service info suggests SUV and Pickup are OK but no trailers or large RV's. Any advice will be appreciated.
I did it in 2007. I drove "down". I did not have my camper then, just a bed cap. There are places where the road is really narrow with seriously overhanging rocks. I recall at least two places where it may be a challenge getting a full size camper through.
In spite of going down at a slow speed, first gear, and having no camper my brakes on the then Chevy 2500 HD got pretty hot.
It is a very interesting and spectacular drive.

......I wrote to them today, not answer but it is Sunday.
:h Huh!
Give them a call. I had one jack act flakey. It ran fine in one direction but not the other. Called and a new powerhead was sent under warranty. I sent the bad motor back which they repaired and returned. I now have a spare motor.:D

RE: Faulkner's Grave or bust, part 4, final,

Last year about this time we went to Big Bend NP. I specifically detoured to Luling to try City Market.
It was Sunday afternoon and they were closed! Big disappointment. Sounds like I must try again.
Enjoyed your posts.

RE: 4 cyl. RV alaska

Depending on your route up to the beginning of the Alaska Highway you can avoid any extreme elevations. The highest elevation on the entire Alaska Highway is around 4500 feet. I don't recall anywhere else we went in Alaska being any higher. Almost anywhere in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, western Nebraska, etc is higher.
Take your time and enjoy the trip! We certainly did.

RE: TorkLift vs HapiJac

I went with the Torklifts (no drilling required) as I didn't want to drill a bunch of holes in my truck bed. I also like the idea of the mounts bolting directly to the frame.

RE: Eliminating my Land Line

MJ does require a monthly fee, although it is very low. OOMA has no monthly fee for basic services (Caller ID, Call Waiting and a couple of others).
Jim
There is no monthly fee for Magic Jack.
I agree that you don't actually pay by the month but it can be calculated on a per month basis if you desire to do so. MJ even has a commercial touting a per month charge ($1 something). When I bought the MJ the purchase price included 1 year of service. After that you will need to purchase additional service.

RE: Mysterious vent

Is it anywhere close to your batteries? I had one TT with the battery inside the TT in a vented box. The vent tube went to an outside vent that looked just like your photo.

RE: Eliminating my Land Line

I am currently using OOMA and Magic Jack. Both work very nicely with a good (broadband) internet connection. I just recently installed the OOMA with the intent of eliminating my monthly bill from ATT after proving to myself the internet phone is acceptable. So far it has been just as good as the landline.
OOMA does not require a phone LINE. It does require a phone (any normal telephone will work) that plugs into the box. The box converts the dialing tones and analog voice to be compatible with the internet. You use the phone just as you do when connected to a landline. OOMA does NOT use your computer in any way except for installation and setup.
Magic Jack seems to work just a well with the same quality internet connection. MJ does require your computer to operate as it plugs into a USB port. You can use MJ with standard computer headsets (analog or USB) or plug a standard telephone into the RJ-11 jack on the MJ itself. The MJ is great for travel.
MJ does require a monthly fee, although it is very low. OOMA has no monthly fee for basic services (Caller ID, Call Waiting and a couple of others).

RE: New Lance 825 2 way frig conversion to 3 way frig?

Inverter, great idea... But getting back to the inverter... I am leaning toward the inverter. I am trying to decide weather to go sine wave or modified sine wave... a unit that I can hard wire into the batteries and use for laptop use also, maybe something like a true sine wave 300 watt unit, like this: (http://www.outsidesupply.com/300-watt-pure-sine-inverter-12-volt-gfci.aspx) for $189. Or maybe something larger or maybe just using a transfer switch and buying a huge inverter and converting all AC outlets to DC?? Looks like the possiblilies are unlimited.
I recently installed a Xantrex Pro 1000. It is a MSW with built in transfer switch. I wired it into my AC distribution with some minor mods (does not power my converter/charger or hot water heater). This is a nice unit and cost about the same as the device in your link above.
I think most (all?) of the items in your camper will work just fine with a MSW inverter.

RE: finally took the plunge

....If running off the batteries in the TC will it eventually drain the Truck batteries?
If your 08 Chevy is like my previous 01 2500HD then yes unless there is an isolator already in the camper it WILL run down all your batteries under the right circumstances. I "tested" my Chevy in Tombstone, AZ once. Immediately after that trip I installed a relay which powers up only when the truck is running. I have done the same with my current Dodge.
Enjoy your new camper!:B

RE: Diesel cool off ?

I don't worry about it. My Juice/Attitude has a built in turbo timer which shuts down the engine when the EGT drops to a set temperature. The set point can be easily adjusted.
The cool down time will be not only a function of how hard you pulled before shutdown but also the ambient temperature i.e. under exact same conditions it takes longer to cool down when the outside temperature is higher.
