RE: More info on 1/2 ton pulling TT

It isn't so much a question of what is possible - it is really about what is pleasurable.
For a year I towed a 5500# (dry) trailer with a F-150 4.6L V8. The truck had a max tow of 6900# so I thought I would be ok.
Cruising on flat highway it was ok....but going up any sort of hill was an exercise in stress management. 35-40mph up hills was standard. I began to hate towing my beloved TT!
I just got the truck in my sig and we took the TT to the coast last weekend. It was such a different experience. 55-60 on cruise control pretty much no matter the grade. Your really do forget the TT is even back there and you can focus on talking with the DW and DKs.
Just my 2 cents. IF you are really serious about RVing and you want to take you TT out several times per year - find a good used diesel and forget the stress at work ;)

2010 F-250 Diesel - Horrible CR Review....

I was literally planning on pulling the trigger on a new 2010 F250 FX4 Diesel tomorrow.
I have owned a Ford F150 XLT (1999) for 11 years and it has been PERFECT. 160K miles without a major problem and hauled my 2000# camper then towed my 5500# trailer.
Given this experience with Ford I only quickly viewed the Dodge and Chevy 2500 models and then went straight to the Ford dealer.
I just noticed, however, that the Consumer Report review for the 2010 F250 is terrible. 10mpg (is it really that bad??), poor reliability ratings, poor ride, handling, braking .
What's up? I dont mean to start a brand war...but can someone either steer me clear of this truck or help put my mind at ease?

RE: How do you store your TT?

I store my Prowler at an RV storage lot. I have an ADCO trailer cover and covers for the wheels.
It sits on level gravel with the leveling jacks up. Batteries disconnected. Fully winterized (now) after freezing solid back in early December. Exact extent of any injuries still not fully known from that episode.

RE: Eternabond On A New Trailer

Do you need to scrape off the old adhesive before applying Eternabond? The video on their website specifically shows and says that if you clean it, you can apply EB right over the old adhesive.

RE: TT rear view camera - installed w/pics

Question - what is the primary intended use for the camera?
Is it for backing up and parking the trailer? Or is it primarily for passing/changing lanes.
I know it would be helpful to both...but what is the goal?
Thanks!

OT - Test drove new TV candidate #1 today...

2009 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LTZ V8 Duramax with the Allison transmission.
Boy....sure was a different ride than my current TV. I wasn't towing anything...but you could just feel the power and torque. More than enough to tow my 5500 lbs of TT - with room to upgrade to a larger TT or a 5th wheel later on.
Very comfy. Very smooth.
The dealership has been cut off by GMC so they are not getting any 2010s. The salesperson wasn't willing to wheel and deal much (offered 10% off MSRP!!! HA!)....but it was the test drive that I was looking for.
I could be very happy with that rig. Ram 2500 and Ford F-250 diesels are up next!

RE: Skyline Malibu Opinions

There is a dealer here in Oregon that had several Skyline Malibu trailers on the lot when I was looking.
In fact......he still has it for sale.
http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/rvs/1554106685.html
There are a couple others out there as well. Seems like the going price these days is $16,500(ish). So - seems reasonable to talk a dealer down do $15K.
When I looked the model they had was an '07, and it was quite a bit more expensive....but....at that point the economy hadnt collapsed yet.
I had some very very minor concerns about the quality of the unit. Found some moldings that were coming off....some of the simulated wood paper coating on the cupboards was starting to peel off, the graphics on the outside were starting to peel. Very minor stuff....stuff that likely would have been fixed at the dealer walkthrough.
To tell the truth....I paid only a little less than that for my '06. Had I been able to get a new '08 for $15K I probably would have gone that route.

RE: Dead water pump

Same boat as you.
My TT pump froze solid. It took less than 12 hours in sub freezing temps to freeze it.
When things thawed I check all the water lines and did not find any breakage from freezing, but I am pretty sure the pump is shot (it did not work or sound normal after thawing).
Good news is that water pumps are about $60 and literlly take 20 minutes to replace.

RE: Let's see if we can do this without a picture.....

Ah Ha!
So...if I get a propane hose with an air fixture then I can run propane appliances off of the propane tanks on my TT?
I often use a coleman stove and a propane BBQ....would be nice to not have to buy the little green (expensive) bottles.

Let's see if we can do this without a picture.....

Winterizing my TT and I was on my back looking for the hot and cold water low spot drains.
I noticed a strange metal (brass?) pipe with an air hose ficture on the end (similar to the picture below):
http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00jMRatHLJvuoQM/Japan-One-Touch-Type-Coupling-for-Air-Hose-YJ-SP-.jpg
Right above the air hose fitting is a valve with a lever to open or close the pipe.
The pipe runs alone the botton of the trailer and has pipes that run up into the trailer. A couple up into the kitchen that I could see.
Any ideas? Is this for pushing water out with an air hose?
I looked through the owners manual and didnt see anything.

RE: Finally winterized.....only minor damage....

Hi,
I hope you added some antifreeze to the sink traps!
Yep. I got them. Used a gallon distributed between all of the traps and drains.
Thanks!

Finally winterized.....only minor damage....

Warm weather finally coincided with my murder work schedule (plus a key xmas present) to allow me to finally get out to the lot and winterize the TT.
I used this air compressor:
air compressor
And this attachment from camping world"
Attachment
The threads of the attachment fit right to the end of the compressor.
I ran the compressor off of a B&D 400W inverter that I attached to my RV batteries. The need here is because I cannot get my RV to my house. I live at the top of a long windy road and I would have to back it all the way down if I drove it up here. So....this all needed to be done at the RV lot with no shore power.
Inverter:
Inverter
I opened the hot and cold low water points. Opened up the faucets. drained the hot water tank, and then engaged the bypass. Drained what was left in the fresh tanks. Black and grey were alredy dry.
I let the compressor charge to 100 PSI then opened the output to 30psi and let the 2 gallons discharge. Then did it again for good measure. Anti-freeze in the traps, drains and toilets.
I think I got it all.
The one casualty of the freeze appears to be my pump. I had some water left in the fresh tank so I ran the pump to see if it was still working. Instead of the beefy purring noise it usually makes I got a swishing noise and no pressure at the faucets.
Luckily that is only a ~$60 repair.
Keep your fingers crossed I dont find more when I go to use it in the spring!!

Got a new air compressor and attachements to blow out my lines. Straight off "the list" but the DW knew I wanted it ;)
Anyone else?

Minimum air compressor size for winterizing?

I am hoping to find a DC air compressor big enough to blow all the air out of my lines in winter. I have a huge (75G?) air compressor at home - but it is enormous, the trailer is at a lot, and I want to see if I can engineer this process on-site.
There are several DC pumps out there that claim 100 PSI.....but they are small and appear designed for inflating car tires and water toys.
Anyone able to winterize with an air compressor that runs off DC power?
Thanks!!

RE: Just a tad late on the winterization......

i'm right there with you. We were planning to use our trailer soon and didn't expect it to get this cold so soon, so I didn't winterize yet either. Hopefully it will warm up soon an we'll be ok, but we'll see. It's not supposed to get down to 12 in Portland.
We4Nolans -
I got to my TT after about 48 hours of freezing temps and the lines/pump were already frozen solid. I was afraid the water heater would be frozen, but it was not. So I think I got lucky there as that would have been expensive.
Hopefully it will warm up soon so I can check for damage....

Just a tad late on the winterization......

Well.....I had a long business trip planned. Getting ready for that, and being away from home, I didn't bother to even check the weather.
While I was gone the temps in Portland Oregon dropped below highs of 32 (lows in the teens). I had not yet winterized because I am planning on using it next weekend for a family event.
So......when I got back into town I raced over to the lot....hoping to not find icicles hanging from the bottom of the camper and ice flows across the linoleum.
I drained the hot water tank. Quite a bit of water came out...so it wasn't frozen solid. I also checked and it didnt appear that there was any visible bulges or damage. No broken pipes in the compartment either.
I check the pipes for the intake, pump, under the sinks, and to the outside shower. No signs of broken pipes, although it appears the pipes are all frozen. The pump did not work and I could not get any gurgling or anything.
Black, gray, and water tanks are all empty.
What can I expect to find when this thing finally thaws next week (supposed to warm up)? Will the pump be shot? loose fittings?
Appreciate the help.
