RE: americana 4 season fifth wheel

PedroFun The Harley Hauler sounds like a 2nd trailier. There has been issue with it not being legal in some states. It amounts to double-tow. Check it out more before you jump on it.

RE: Reviving Dead Batteries? Is my old converter overcharging?

Batteries should be float charged at about 13.2 volts and this should not boil dry the batteries. Higher float voltages, more likely the electrolyte will be boiled out and ruin the battery.

RE: Blue Ridge parkway

Some improved areas of the Parkway do get plowed. The Peaks of Otter area with it's lodge is kept open year round. Rt-43 which follows part of the Parkway from MP 86 to MP91 is plowed by VDOT. As weather improves, the Park Service plows from MP91 to MP106 to enable visitor access to the Peaks from Roanoke. Also, MP 85 to MP78 gets plowed for FAA access to their radar station on Apple Orchard Mountain. MP61 to MP64 is plowed for local access across the James River.
I think a general rule is if there is no financial interest to keep a section of Parkway open, then it closes when travel is hampered by ice/snow/rock slides, saving resources.

RE: drive to Douthat state park via Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway doesn't go near Douthat (VA) State Park. Douthat is a few miles north of I-64, Clifton Forge, VA.

RE: Solar panel wiring

Wire directly to the batteries thru a protective fuse that can serve as a disconnect if need be.
You should also connect a thermal sensor to the batteries to sense the battery temperature. Connecting to the solar charge controller, it will vary the float voltage slightly to ensure a full charge, or to prevent over charging.

RE: Richmond Va RV Show????????

If you are happy with what you have, not in the market for a new RV, it is not worth the long drive. But if you need an excuse to get out of the snow every chance you get, come on down. Today's 12" snow fall will be gone by then :-)

RE: solar for multiple units

Richard, You can do it! There are two ways to approch your idea.
1- use new panels with the same output voltage and just parrallel them through a disconnect cable before the solar charge controller in the 5th wheel. The controller needs to be able to handle the added current in the 5er. You will need another charge controller dedicated to the camper.
2- use new panels that don't match the old ones connected to a charge controller. The output of the controller is ~13 volts. Connect this directly to the batteries in the 5er, or the camper. Make this setup portable including the charge controller so it could be connected to any RV via the Berg electrical connector that plugs into the tow vehicle. There is a pin connection that has the RV battery positive circuit.
Make a protective cover for the portable panels from 1x2 wood around the parimeter and cover with 1/4" plywood. When the cover is removed it can be attached to one end of the panel and set as a "A" frame on the ground facing the sun. Use cables with connectors to allow easy setup and take down for travel.
I did this years ago when I had but one panel and used it as a portable solar setup. My friends used it too since it had the common RV 7 pin electrical connector.

RE: terrible foot pain

Once you loose the feeling in your feet, then you don't know when something is wrong. Then you are in real trouble because bones will break and then only when the foot is deformed or has a bleeding ulcer do you know you have a problem. Get professional help now and save your foot.

RE: Fifth Rail Mounting

Troy, See if you can find the installation instructions for the rails and brackets you have. Usually there is a stout bracket at each end of the rails to the vehicle frame under the bed. If you can mount them anywhere unrestricted, the front rail will have the frame bracket attached to the front edge bolts. And the rear rail will have the brackets attached to the rear edge bolts. After installation, you might want to spray (black) paint over the brackets and bolts/nuts under the bed. This will protect from weather and show any movement later on if something loosen.

RE: Floridian driving the Blue Ridge Parkway w/TT

The Parkway will be slower - speed limit is 45 mph and less in some places. You will want to pull off in many places to enjoy the views and local attractions such as visitor centers, etc. Don't be rushed, enjoy !
In Shenandoah, the speed limit is 35 mph and some of the turns and grades you will drive will cause you to be in a low gear to control your speed as you can't get a running start at a hill with a sharp curve at the bottom. But SNP and the Skyline Drive is well worth the visit. Again, don't get rushed and enjoy. Big Meadows is very popular CG, but Loft Mountain CG in the south district is prefered by many because the camp sites are more isolated from one another and bigger. Big Meadows is more commerical with a big lodge and very fine Byrd Visitors Center.
No trailer hook-ups but there are dumping stations on the Parkway and Skyline Drive.

RE: battery leads both yellow!!

Lights will work either polarity, electronics will get fried if wrong polarity.
If you can't see which wire goes to the frame (battery negative), then use an ohm meter and check for continuity to the frame after shutting off all electrical circuits.
Never do "arc" testing. A good way to blow something up even if you were right.

RE: Use Honda 2000i while in motion?

You better try it ahead of time to verify the low oil sensor doen't kill the Honda when when the vehicle is in motion. I can't run my EU3000 while in motion for this very fact when going around curves and on hills.

RE: Pressure pro tire pressure monitoring system

The center on the dash may not be the best location for the receriver. Try moving it nearer the side window or higher before using a repeater or external antenna. If more is needed, the repeater with more electronics would be my last choice. You don't need more things to fail. Use a passive (non-amplified)external antenna mounted under the vehicle.

RE: Television Translators

Here is another option to calculate the "local" stations and ability to receive them Antenna Web Enter your location and verify on the map because they will center on your zip code. There are only two stations 14 miles away KMOH-DT 6.1 (channel 19) from Kingman, and K30BQ (translators have channel number as 2nd & 3rd digit of callsign) NBC from Mesa, AZ.
Go back to the home page of Antenna Web to see the antennas required to receive the stations identified for your location.
You really need to find a friend/family member on a TV satellite and get a 2nd receiver on their account (less than $10 a month). Get a 2nd receiving dish off E-Bay to make a stand-alone system.
Good luck!

RE: Television Translators

You might try this site to find the stations, distance and direction.
Observe other TV antennas in the area to see which way they are aimed and how big and how high they are mounted to receive TV signals in your area.
If you are at Moonriver RV resort, then your location is N34-58-09, W114-36-11 if you need to re-calculate propagation paths on another web site.
