RE: 2006 Chevy 1500 Crew Cab

I pulled a 7000 GVWR trailer with a 2007 1500 crew cab 5.3 liter with a 3.73. It did pretty well on flat land and some small hills, however if I was loaded with two preteen Grand kids and their gear in addition to the DW and myself, I could tell a difference especially in the mountains.
I would suspect that you could do ok with the 3.42 geared Silverado if loaded lightly, however it would not be my choice in gearing, I don't think you will be happy with it.
I ended up trading for a 2500 Duramax and am much happier with the towing. I think what ever you choose, you can learn a lot on this forum based on others experiences.I have had three Silverados and had good experiences with all of them.I have also owned two Fords that I liked. You just need to get the tow vehicle that will allow you to tow safely and with comfort without worrying about being overloaded or straining to get up the hills.

RE: HELP!!! GVWR vs UVW

I would not take the salesman's opinion on tow capability. If they allow you a test tow, that is fine, but I don't believe you will be happy with the towing after you load your camping items in your trailer and truck and experience real world towing. It's not pleasant being borderline or over in towing weights.

RE: Trailer Plug In

I will also add: If you have trouble getting 12 volts to the 7-way plug to charge your trailer battery from the truck, and the fuse is ok, then you may have to connect a wire to the stud at the under hood fuse panel. There is a wire taped to wiring harness down under the master cylinder that needs to be connected to the stud. You may find the article pertaining to this on a search of the forum.
This is what I had to do on my truck.

RE: water heater plug

I agree with j-d, don't use brass on an aluminum tank. Teflon tape works well.

RE: 1st Trip With New 09 Duramax

I went from a 1500 gasser to a 2009 2500 Duramax and agree with the OP.

I just enjoy driving mine, whether I'm towing or not, but it sure does show off its abilities when towing.

RE: Does anyone use their C-PAP while camping?

Last year we camped with the grand kids in a national forest campground and there were not any electric hook-ups. I carried along a battery jump starter that also had a 12 volt receptacle. My cpap is 12 volts, so I found an adapter that would fit my cpap and then just plugged into the jump starter receptacle. It worked fine for two nights, then I had to charge it with my tow vehicle for a while when we drove around. Worked great.

RE: Anybody have/use a portable icemaker?

We have one that we use in our travel trailer and have found it very handy, especially when the grand kids are along.
We purchased our at Target also.
It makes ice very fast, however the cubes are not real hard.
Does a good job otherwise.

RE: Amicalola Falls

I rode through the campground last year just in my truck. Like the others said the road to the camping area is short, but very steep and it seemed to me that some of the campsites would be fairly tight for trailers over 26-28ft. It is a nice campground once you get to the top, however I did not notice any larger trailers there that day. I saw several pop-ups and a couple of 19-21ft trailers.I suppose the campground office could give you more details on possible size restrictions if any.I do know the steepness of the road will get your attention.

RE: Now a TT is in the family

Your trailer looks a lot like my 1994 Sunnybrook 27FK that I bought a couple of years ago for 4500. It had always been under shelter and used very little. The only thing I had to do was replace the water pump where someone failed to winterize it properly. The seller had even installed new tires and a battery prior to selling.
We as well as our Grandkids have certainly enjoyed ours, and I'm sure you will also.
It's also fun to make it truly yours with the various modifications you can make.
Have fun!!!!!

RE: get ready to see a flood of FEMA trailers destroy the market

I've seen several of these FEMA trailers "For Sale" by individuals lately on Craigslist. They are usually barebones and have regular 115v house hold refrigerators. Most of the ones I've seen have an asking price of 5-6000 dollars.

RE: Stone Mtn, Ga

We live close to Stone Mtn park and enjoy taking the Grand kids to the park because of all the activities that are available, however for camping we prefer to take them to Unicoi State Park just north of Helen,Ga.
Hard Labor Creek State park is nice, but not a lot of activities for kids in the area.
I think if you have never been to Stone Mtn Park, you will enjoy the campground and the park because of the memorial hall, history museum, and Crossroads.

RE: Chevy trailer connection 12 volts ??

On my 2009 Duramax the fuses were in place. The only thing that was required was to connect the wire to fused stud. The wire is taped off below the master cylinder and is probably labeled, mine was. A search on this forum should show photos of the studs and how to connect.

RE: 7 way trailer plug

I have a 2009 2500 Duramax. I did not have power to my 7-way plug.
The taped wire just below the master cylinder needs to be connected to the fuse terminal post under the hood. Can't remember if its #1 or # 2, but the wire terminal only fits the correct post. Your fuse will already be in place.

RE: Nylon Plug on Hot Water Heater

I had the exact same problem on my water heater. I purchased a 3 piece easy out set at our local Home Depot and removed mine with no trouble, however I also like cmartin7143's idea with the hot screwdriver. I believe that would also work.

RE: Looking for a new TV - recommendations needed

Having towed with both a 1500 1/2 and 2500 3/4 my preference based on what you are currently towing and the possibility that if you decided to get a slightly heaver trailer in the future, then my vote would be for a 3/4 especially since it is not your daily vehicle. My 3/4 is not my daily driver, however I don't mind driving it in traffic a all--as a matter of fact, I feel safer in it that I do in the smaller grocery getter car.
My preference is a diesel, however I don't think you would go wrong with any of the big three as long as you get the right motor and transmission for the load, gas or diesel.
If you may be thinking of a 5th wheel in your future, I would probably go with a one ton or larger based on the projected trailer size/weight.
Good luck in you decision, you will get a lot of good info here.

RE: Towing with Silverado 1500

I towed my 27 ft 7000 GVWR trailer for a while with a 2007 1500 crewcab 5.3 with 3.73 gears and Equalizer brand hitch.
I felt like it did a good job pulling, stopping, etc as long as it was just my Wife and me and I did not load my trailer and truck too heavy. If I was loaded with enough firewood for 2-3 nights, the two grand-kids and their stuff, and some extra food etc in the trailer then I could tell a big difference in pulling, and handling. Also some of the N. Georgia hills were kind of a slow go, but it pulled them.
I was torn between keeping the 1500 or go with a 2500 because it seemed hard to justify changing vehicles. I finally felt comfortable with the decision to get a larger tow vehicle. I traded for a 2009 2500 Duramax/Allison. The difference in towing the same trailer is remarkable and I don't regret my decision what so ever. The 2500 is much more stable and powerful and is a pleasure to drive towing or not.
With that being said, since you don't want a different tow vehicle at this time, I feel as long as you adhere to your weight limitations you'll be ok towing with what your are considering, the hills could be a challenge.
Good luck with your decision.
