RE: Cad Dollar at near par

Our first winter in Florida we paid over 50 cents extra on every dollar. So-o glad we could help out the business interests in Canada! I'm sick of years of paying inflated prices for everything we buy at home and elsewhere in order to pad the profits of corporations. It's time for Joe and Jane Public to get a break!
Outsourcing of jobs shouldn't be allowed. Buy Canadian and Buy American should be the rule whichever country you live in. Let the corporations downsize their greed!

Myrtle Beach north to Ontario

Isn't there a tricky route north that avoids all the big cities? We've always gone north and south to Florida via I-75, so this will be a change.

RE: Toronto RV Show

We were at the Fall Show in Toronto, and this weekend we were at the Ft. Myers Show down here but don't recall seeing any outdoor kitchens at either event. What do they look like?

Suggested stops..loop of S. Ontario?

We're planning a trip up along the south shore of L. Huron, crossing through Barrie area and maybe a bit north, across to the Ottawa River, down to the St. Lawrence and back south-west. We don't need to absolutely hug the waterways, but we're looking for something scenic anyway. Any thoughts for campgrounds? Probably take two weeks with staying here and there to enjoy the areas.

I'm going to try to print out that 'Link'. It looks like we need to really study that thing. Hope the guys at the dealership installed it correctly anyway. Something facing out rather than in or vice versa.
By the way, what's the 'hitch head'? Not the ball, I'm thinkin'.

I took a look at the Reese website and the "Reese Dual Cam High-Performance Sway Control" Model 26002 looks a lot like it.
Our tow vehicle is an '06 Escalade. Rated to tow 8000 lbs.

RE: Pointers Reese load-distrib. etc. hitch?

Thanks all! Will definitely read up thoroughly before we first use that trailer/hitch combo. We have all of the winter to do it, as the trailer and hitch are sitting up there in Canada. No photo possible, unfortunately. The attachments on the side of the trailer hitch area look designed to move/control the space shuttle rather than a 4,000 lb. trailer. That thing is 'a moose'! Wish it had come with some kind of instruction.
Meanwhile we're down here in our '05 Sunnybrook 5th wheel, enjoying some 'really cool' SW Florida weather. Freezing predicted tonight!

Pointers Reese load-distrib. etc. hitch?

Just bought a new trailer at the fall sales just before heading south. We've always been concerned about sway control, more now that this is a longer unit.
It's sitting back up there in the snow, wearing a new Reese load distributing, sway controlling hitch. Or so the dealer tells us. It cost a grand installed and looks incredibly strong. We had gone from a 17 ft. trailer to a 25 ft, both lightweight models. This new one is supposed to weigh around 4,000 empty. We drove home in really bad weather from the dealership and were pleased, but we don't know much of anything about the day to day use of this Reese hitch. I guess it's the third ring in the chain for something or the fourth ring in the chain for something else. I'm looking specifically for pointers on that regular, hitching up, unhitching stuff.
Also our SUV has some automatic load-distribution in the back end, goes up and down on its own. Is this a complication or a help?

RE: Went Home For Christmas

We're home for Christmas and loving it! O.K. I am. Hubby puts up with it. But we're off to the kids' place today for a great Christmas and will brave the airports on Sunday to get back south. I'll miss home and family..and even snow..but, man, it's cold out there! Won't miss that.

RE: Avoiding alligators

Never had a problem with fire ants bothering our dog down here in Florida, but he fell into a river once, (a difference of 'opinion' between his leash and someone's patio chair)where we had to swim him out around a short fishing pier and around to the ramp to get him out. We were sweatin'! And he wasn't too happy either...not a 'water dog'. No gators, fortunately, but he was a near 100 lb. Dobe, so only the larger ones would have thought to take him on...I guess...despite all the frantic splashing he was doing. There was one bad result though, he got an intestinal bug that the vet said would surely have come from the dunking in the river.
We did have occasion to be standing out on a fishing dock one evening with a small, yapping dog, and watched a medium size gator slowly swimming towards the sound. When the little dog left, the gator turned away.
Ocean swimming seems the best idea. We've been at Venice (without our Dobe) and watched many dogs enjoying the water. No Dobes or Rotties there that day.

RE: Crossing the border with food.

Definitely shop when you get down here. It's not worth any possible hassle, and food's cheaper anyway. Selection is more 'interesting' also. We like Winn Dixie (cheap) and Publix (more expensive), but whatever floats your boat. Get W.D.'s discount card and customer discount cards at any chain you're going to frequent.
Oh! We have had dog food confiscated by U.S. Customs, so watch out for that.

RE: Whats with the Weather in the RGV??????

Sea dog, I was talking about the El Nino effect..cooler, wetter weather expected in the south this winter. So far it seems as if we've already had more rain than we had all last season in our part of SW Florida, but the sun keeps coming back and temps are usually in the 70's or 80's. Three days of 80's are predicted early next week. This area has been suffering through a multi-year drought, so the water's welcome, but our county is on a flood watch today. That's how much rain we've been getting with this last system. We're through with it by noon today, and I'll be glad to see that Florida sunshine again!

RE: Whats with the Weather in the RGV??????

It's kind of funny that they call 70's a 'cold front' here in SW Florida. We're in such weather right now. I prefer it to the humid 80's that we've had so much of for the past month. For the next several days we're to have daily highs from low to high 70's, breaking back into the 80's Tuesday or Wednesday..briefly? So far we're having more cloud and rain than last season, but still lots of sun and heat too. We'll see what happens deeper into December and then January with the strange weather predicted for the south this winter. This morning our weather forecaster took the time to mention some inches of snow possible soon in Houston??! Guess we'll count our blessings.

RE: Cape Canaveral campground in Feb - suggestions!

We camped at Disney and just drove over to the Cape one day for the tour. No launch at that time. Our thoughts were that there was lots more to do at and around Disney anyway, and the Cape wasn't too far away for a one or two day visit. (Tickets purchased online allowed two days of admission, but we didn't end up using our second day.)
The negative to that in your case might be getting over to a good viewing area if you're not already camped in one. I'm sure traffic is nuts on a launch day.
We got our booking at Disney (in late March/early April) by just calling and calling, since we decided just a week in advance.

RE: Are we breaking a law?

I wouldn't ask anything at the border. Your total vocab. should be along the lines of 'Yes sir/No sir'. We got royally chewed out one year just for using the word 'live'..as in: We're going to 'live' down south for three months. We were never to let the guy hear us say 'live' again. (Can't remember the last time somebody said they never wanted to hear me say some word again. I think I was five! And it was a much worse word!) It seems we don't 'live' in the States, we are GUESTS!!! (Hm-mm. Do 'guests' not live?) Anyway, I'd get the answer to your question from other sources. My own opinion (of no particular value at all), is that you're fine.

RE: Access to cash for Canadians in USA

We just take cash down (2-3 hundred for 3-4 months)and find it stretches extremely well since we use our TD U.S. Dollar Visa card for just about everything. We've had to buy more only once or twice in eight seasons. Most years we bring some of the original cash home for use the next year. If we do have to use an ATM once, what are we out?..a few bucks over what would have been the 'best' rate? Can't really work up a sweat about the possibility.
But you remind me that it's time to top up what we brought home last year. We're outta here in ten days!
