RE: RV Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

You have to remember that this is an opinion zone, not a fairness or accuracy zone. All sorts of weird "truths" will pop up from time to time. Need to take with a grain of salt.
Spoken like a true piece of ... salt!

"Even though it cost us $250 in fuel, our four day mini vacation was money well spent with friends, new scenery and a break from our busy lives. Hans "
You only go by once and to short your experiences with friends, no matter how far, can't be replaced and a few cents more or less in fuel prices just don't count!
Happy trails

RE: RV Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

Just filled up the smart car with 18 bucks worth of diesel. 1.28 per litre or about 4.80 US PER US gallon. Hasn't really gone up much here in the last 5 years. Maybe 16 cents a litre. It'll drop here after the long weekend....and then go back up for the next long weekend. :). Gas is about a dime more right now.
Smart car, smart people!
I've been hammering the Volt lately and may have to put 4 or 5 gallons in it sometime in the next couple weeks. LOL
Been buying Diesel though as wife is planting about 70 or so flats of flowers this year and the truck can handle about 48 flats at a time.
Have not gotten the TT out of the dealers yet as was to cold then planting season happened. soon though we will head north to the UP to cool off. Fuel up there is generally 10 to 20 cents higher.

RE: RV Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

When I went on the drilling platform tour in Morgan City, LA, we were told that a new level 6 drilling platform cost about $6.5 BILLION each. Prior to the moratorium there were 24 in the Gulf. These level 6 platform are about 4 acres in size and have 7 levels or about 28 acres of floor space. WOW. They also said that about 90% of the gross profit went into the "upside" or exploration. This is expensive to drill in the few places that are still OK. The Deep Water Horizon was in water 6,000 feet deep and then drilling down and additional 2 miles below the surface of the bottom. We have billions of barrels onshore and in shallow water that are "off limits".
I have linked to some interesting photos of the drill rig photos below. This tour is publicly available if you are ever in that area.

The gulf states are restrictive because tourist don't like looking through the oil platforms to see the sunrise or set.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

Thanks for the tip on mint! We recently had a mouse issue in the house, so it's good to have another trick up my sleeve. And I wonder if mint is invasive in CO conditions? I would LOVE to have something to invade the natural areas of my property...currently, the things that are taking over are all sharp (yucca) or have thorns (thistle, etc.). Mint sounds like a great invasive from my perspective - soft and useful if needed!
Northern Michigan is every bit as hard in the winter and we have it by the basket full!

On second thought, I think I'll just buy some mint oil to dab around the basement.
Mint is a weed in In. look for it this summer , highly invasive

So I guess Big Oil's purchase of the Obama administration accounts for the high retail prices. And here I thought BO didn't promote fossil fuels. I really enjoy you opening your mind to us tomman. A bit scary to look inside, but enjoyable, nevertheless.
I don't see a pipeline do you?
Could be one but not today or tomorrow!
Bought off, I don't think so.

RE: 10 Worst States for Retirement!

I've been in most states for a day or a few months. Seen the poverty of the south and the lonlyness of the west. All things being equal Ithink if you've save some, stayed some, and loved some you'll either stay where you were born or if there is nothing there for you you'll stumble around until you lite somewhere.
Personally we have family here in southern Michigan, we 20 minutes from Tiger field, the lions field, 3 casinos, several theaters and playhouses', several concert arenas and great waterfront several great and I mean GREAT lakes and 100's of restaurants. There is crime if you are look'n for it never ever needed a weapon to walk the streets. Great seasons to be here and some to be else where. Great water for drink'n, great air and plenty of touristy places.
Don't like the politics, taxes or the roads but it is still a great place to be retired, something to do everyday and not having to go somewhere measured in hours but in minutes!

RE: What effect is Sequestration having on the parks?

I wonder how expensive National Park campgrounds really are to maintain. Most of the NP campgrounds were built by the CCC back in the '30s. It's public property, there are no taxes, business licenses or other similar expenses. The public ones depend on volunteers as camp hosts. They collect the money and clean the sites. Fire rings and picnic tables last for decades. Garbage pickup and restroom cleaning takes maybe an hour or two and is performed by employees who make less than $15 dollars an hour.
For example, Norris campground in Yellowstone has 100 campsites and charges $20 a day (about the same price Xanterra charges for their comparable concession-operated campgrounds, with all of Xanterra's additional expenses and its need to see a profit). That means Norris is grossing close to $2000 a day, and as I pointed out has a minimal operating cost. I would say that campground operation is clearly self-supporting and probably subsidizing other operations in the park.
Gee, I think you are on the fringe............... Who cleans up after a group of pigs? Who fixes the plumbing, hot water (where available) does the roads trails and goes to find the lost? Who fights the fires? Who mans the headquarters, the info centers. who studies the wildlife? Who takes care of them in hard times? Who cuts trees and such after the storms................................... it goes on and on and they are under staffed!

RE: Camping in this economy

We will take a "major" long trip if gas is around $3.50 and if it's a dime or so higher, we'll cut back on the distance.
So you are saying if you would do a 5000 mile trip ok but if gas goes up a dime you cut back?
5000 mile @ 10 miles per gallon = 500 gallons at a dime more = 500 *.10 = 50 bucks !
Wow!And even if that trip was nothing but driving every day it would take at least 10 days at 500 miles per day, so that would equate to $5.00 per day. That is almost a quarter pounder with cheese meal. At that rate I would cut back too.
Are you talking about the same 5000 mile trip as the other guy? What 5000 mile trip?
I guess you didn't understand the word "if" in my calcs.

RE: What effect is Sequestration having on the parks?

It would interesting to know how many of our elected officials RV and camp at our wonderful parks.
These parks were set aside by folks like Teddy Roosevelt and such, these people seen the beauty and wanted this country's folks to see them too.
I think it is a slap in those forefathers faces not to just keep those parks open but not to improve them so more people can enjoy them.
Sometimes we don't understand that there are those who have never camped or RV'd in the wonderful areas for them we should be sad.

RE: RV Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

you were taken at $5.00. at least according to govt. figures the median price of diesel was, 2011- 3.84; 2010- 2.99 ; 2009- 2.46; 2008- 3.30; 2007-2.88; 2006-2.70.
bumpy
Bump there were plenty of stations back then that got well over $4.75 for diesel!
I had to look hard for a lesser price in May of that year.

RE: RV Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

Yesterday I filled up the 7.3 at $3.599, the lowest price I've paid since I can remember. And I was happy. Isn't that just sick!?! :o
Let's seen in 2008 in June I was paying $5.00 for diesel in many parts of the west.
Here it is 5 years later and you paid $3.59............ Break out the band!
When I retired in 2006 I used $5.00 for fuel even then as a benchmark for our vacations and stuff when doing the math for the long haul of retirement!

We've got 2 types of liquid hand soap dispensers in the house, the plain liquid soap and "frog farts" bubbly soap.
I just have to ask, What the heck is frog farts bubbly soap?
LOL!! The question that has been going through everyone's mind!!
Just Google it. It is a soap made in Canada and doesn't contain farts....so they say

You're right, Tomman. But congress has been shoving unwanted weapons, bases, etc., down DoD's throat since the beginning of the Republic. God forbid some congressman's district should lose a defense dollar.
You were fortunate to see that one before the Mod deleted it, LOL.

RE: Camping in this economy

Mik68, The Canadian portion might be the expensive part as their fuel is considerable more and on the west coast everything is more money. Don't get me wrong Canada offers a lot more uncluttered and unrestricted areas for adventure.
We've never done the Vancouver or la portion but did Michigan to Seattle back to Michigan and I am quite sure we didn't use up that much money. We took about 5 months. Use RVreviews.com to find campsites that are reasonable and have good ratings.

RE: Half ton towing

The safety of your family should be the overriding reason for the 2500 truck. I've towed to the limit before and it just isn't worth it. The truck is to the max of its range and the drivetrain is beyond that IUMHO.
Oh there are idiots everywhere thinking they are saving something by going over the top, they only fool themselves. Just take a look at the differences in the drivetrain as to brakes, trans, and rear end, which one are you going to trust?
