RE: Have not tent camped in 30 years - update

I don't think that the ground has gotten any softer in the past 30 years. Consider picking up some interlocking foam floor pads to place under your tent. An air bed would be a good idea as well.
Enjoy Yosemite! I'm jealous.
Where can I get those foam pads?
Fill
Air Bed (or cot) outside of warmest months of summer: Bad Idea. Hollow tube inflatable with a 0.75 R value means sleeping on a heat sink, buy a ThermaRest (or other brand) self-inflating sleeping pad with a "thermo neutral" Rvalue of 5.0. If you have electric service, heating the inside air will overcome this and you'll sleep well indeed. A thick foam pad works the same as a sleeping pad as well as its cellular design prevents the heat-sink effect.

RE: New tent: want something a little larger this time

Jeff, it's your back, if you think 50# is reasonable I suggest a 2nd look at "Back to the Future" and bask in the nostalgia. No question about the quality of their products though...

RE: Have not tent camped in 30 years - update

Tent camping is worth a 2nd look...My own Grandfather did some Alaska-Highway tenting at the age of 79, so if he can we can, etc...Bears are part of the environment, and like cows, make fine hides, rugs, stews, etc...Fire up the BBQ and invite the cousins over country boy!

Whether the Q120 or the Q100, these are the "Mercedes Benz" of tabletop BBQs! We are hoping that lightning strikes our Weber Go-Anywhere so we can upgrade! :)

RE: Are CB radios still used?

A host of things ruined CBs, including the FCC. Solar flares made reception lousy for years, the FCC allowed more channels than 23 but cut transmitting output, and of course during the "fad" years the hobby was hurt by the arrival of non-hobbyists and low-quality low-price radios. Most move on to 10-meter rigs and a "real" license.

RE: Deep Fryers

There's no substitute for an immersed-element deep fryer, and you can buy smaller versions than our 1-gallon Calphalon for RV'ing. We don't have AC when we camp, so it's a 10" GSI Pinnacle fry pan and peanut oil for frying duties. Dumped the Lodge-type cast iron stuff long ago as there was no good reason to tote all that heavy iron. Consumer Reports just rated them this month as much worse at heating food evenly, difficult to clean and having uncomfortable handles. No wonder the stuff just hangs on my garage wall as a decoration now! :)

RE: Battery longativity

Not below 50% unless you go AGM, some of those can safely discharge down to only 20%! Having owned a few of them, I wouldn't go back to lead-acid batteries for the many advantages of AGM.

RE: New tent: want something a little larger this time

Heavy is a good word to describe the canvas tents you mention. 6 and 8-man Polyester tents with lots of vertical room are available from the usual quality companies (Big Agnes, Mountain HardWear, Sierra Designs, Marmot, REI, EMS, Etc.) that have none of the seepage issues of canvas and weigh half as much.

RE: Smokers - Electric or Charcoal?

I have a Meco Electric and it's easy to use, easy on temp control, and does a great job - which almost any smoker will if used correctly.

RE: rope lights

Seriously, they started out here. We get so high on camping that we need a good landing strip when we come down (for a soft landing). Besides, it's not camping without the Kenwood's Polk Atriums pouring Pink Floyd and a pair of programmable tubed LED special-effects lighting running off the Optima AGM...(Almost forgot to throw the WalMart ammo into the campfire...(POPS).

Might want to move this thread to another forum other than "tent camping". We like to stay under a 10X10 for campsite reasons! :)

RE: Battery pad that inhibits corrosion on the tray

Best way to prevent battery corrosion: Stop buying lead-acid batteries! AGM batteries don't degas or emit corrosives. Don't get me started on the many other advantages, but there are many, and they don't really cost more considering the longer lifespan and you can buy them for below MSRP. Just my humble experience here, no expert in batteries.

RE: Looking to cross the border in early October

"Nearly 3,200 people have been killed in drug-related violence during the first three months of President Enrique Pena Nieto's government, according to Mexican government data." You can live in fantasyland and denialville and that's your business. As I said, I live ON the border, my crewbuddys lost everything in their caravan and will never go back, my daughter's friend went down to party three years ago and has never been seen alive, many thousands have died (many were innocent victims), including in tourists areas like Cancun, Acupulco and others. Anybody with an internet connection can review the incidents and statistics. If you think it's all made up and phony, good for you. Like Israel or some other hotspots, without armed security and an adults-only caravan, we wouldn't ever go. God willing the day will come when it will be safe again, as it was one of our favorite driving vacations and so close by. When you've had to ration you electric due to sabotage, heard the bombs going off as the shrapnel went into the kids legs as they got off the bus, knew families were being slaughtered for asking for more for their crop, etc. you'll understand a little better how narcotraficantes operate. We now have warning signs along the southern border posted by the US gov't, and many booby-trapped areas within our own national forests, including the large one close to us. "It won't happen to us", we all have said that. I cannot say that, and I offer my opinion and warning to you as a border resident.
