RE: Workhorse Brake Recall Status

Quick (probably dumb) question: If the brake campaign has been done already on our MH, was that just an interim one and will WE be notified again for different calipers to be installed?

RE: Abbeville, LA to Tallahassee

Thanks for all the good information, including the speed alert and the lanes to be in. We will definitely take this route. We are not in Abbeville just yet, but do intend to eat there. We're staying at Betty's for the first time. Can't wait to get there.

Abbeville, LA to Tallahassee

Next week we will be traveling from Abbeville, LA to Tallahassee. We are in a 36 foot class A motorhome (gasser) pulling a small car. We are considering bypassing I-10 near Abbeville, and instead taking 14 to 90 (future I-49) and following that to I-310 south of New Orleans, eventually hooking up with I-10 on the other side of the city. It looks to be a more interesting route and the roads look good on the map, but I have fallen into that trap before. Any thoughts?

Bishop, CA to east side of Yosemite N P

Is there a safe east-west road to drive from Bishop, CA to the east side of Yosemite NP without driving north to Lake Tahoe and back down? We have a gas 36' motor home pulling a small car. We are clueless about California and are planning our trip for next fall. Thanks for any guidance!

RE: High Dollar RV Parks

kakampers -- I REALLY enjoyed your post about rising values at Retama, since we just bought lot 215 day before yesterday! (Phase II). I only wish we had done it a few weeks earlier before the February price increase!!! To say we are excited would be an understatement. I love your photos; we are in the process of designing our "coach house" now!

RE: Weather, Florida/Texas

It's been bad in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, too. We spent last winter in Florida and it was beautiful. All winter here they say it's VERY unusual to have this much wet and cold. This is our first winter in Texas, so I'll just have to take their word for it! The weather is very changeable, too. It was upper 70s, almost 80 the other day, then a fierce wind came through night before last, and yesterday it only got into the low 40s. Today, back into the 60s and it's supposed to be in the 80s next week. Weird, weird weather. I think it is because of El Nino, that is sending more moisture and clouds to this area. One thing that I notice is that all it takes is for the sun to peek out for it to become a beautiful day instantly.

RE: Help - We're Clueless about Southern Cal

We only plan to be there the month of December, then head for warmer temps in Arizona for January and February. Point well taken, though; we aren't used to taking altitude into account for weather!

RE: Help - We're Clueless about Southern Cal

Thank you all for your help. We're reluctant to rely on state or local campgrounds due to the economy in California right now; afraid they might decide to close them. I'll print out and keep the traffic flow info; thanks! Has anyone stayed at the Californian in Acton? Sounds like it might be a possibility, too.

RE: Anyone Else Cold In Florida

It's been mainly cold and rainy here in the RGV, too all winter. Nice days here and there. I don't think there's any escaping winter this year!

Oceanside sounds like a good possibility, thanks. Do you remember the names of the RV parks?

RE: Help - We're Clueless about Southern Cal

Right now she's in Van Nuys, and I assume she'll stay in that vicinity. Thanks for the responses so far; as I said, we're really clueless on this and just starting to plan.

Help - We're Clueless about Southern Cal

We are starting to plan for next winter's stay, in case we decide on a place that's hard to get into. Our daughter just moved to Los Angeles, so we would like to spend the month of December close enough to be able to drive to see her now and then. We are not familiar with traffic patterns, etc., and aren't sure which direction to look for a reservation out from L.A. We have a 2003 36' Class A motorhome and will be pulling a small car toad. We've heard about Malibu Beach RV Resort, but aren't sure if they have monthly rates. Would San Diego be too far? We have heard about Santee Lakes. We are Escapees, but the Escapee park in S. Cal does not take reservations. Any ideas for us as to what direction we should look into? We have two well-behaved dogs (whippets), and are more into an outdoor lifestyle with hiking, kayaking, etc., than activities-oriented retirement parks. Thanks in advance for any input.

RE: Freaking Out

Amazon is still hiring workampers for next year, just not using any temp agencies. They think they can save some money by hiring them directly. We worked in Coffeyville last fall. It is good money, but be prepared for physical work and long hours. We worked mandatory overtime, 11-hour days, five days a week. I lost 10 pounds while working there.

RE: Why do full-timers do this?

Sorry for the double post, but before we decided to keep our "little" house, we planned to seriously look at Retama Village, already had reservations at Bentsern Palm. We are here now and love it here. Haven't toured Retama yet, but that's upcoming. Be sure to look at the "beach house" photos in kakampers post.

RE: Why do full-timers do this?

Interesting thread! We planned for three years to full time, thinking we wanted no strings anywhere. By the time our large house sold (after 16 months) our situation changed and we also found ourselves with an empty tiny "rental" house that our daughter had lived in for 8 years rent-free and no longer needed. It's a tiny place, but has a large, pretty yard, is next to a woods, and the driveway is large enough for our 36' RV (no code violation). Most importantly, we own it outright, no payments. We thought about renting it out, selling it, weren't sure what to do. Then we decided that FOR NOW it made sense to keep it as a "glorified storage unit" and place to park for a couple of months per year to visit hometown friends, recharge travel urges, save some campground fees, etc. Our children no longer live in that area, but we do have friends there. We already paid for the lawn to be mowed, so we'll just keep that up. Only issue is that it is in Indiana, where we vowed we never wanted to spend another winter! We do love it there in the summer. Kind of hampers our summer wanderlust and we still have to reserve somewhere warm in the winter. The house is cheap enough that we don't feel guilty leaving it empty 7 or 8 months a year, and we still consider ourselves fulltimers. Not sure how long we'll keep it and use it this way. We might end up selling it if we find somewhere warm that we love even more. Since we're just starting out, we haven't investigated all possibilities.

RE: Any Suggestion's

We had always gone to Florida in the past and this is our first year to spend the winter in Texas. We are staying at Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort in Mission, in the Rio Grande Valley. We really like it here. It is a VERY popular place, with most folks returning year after year. It is very well managed, lots going on in the park. Pool tables, horse shoes, line dancing, weekly margarita hour, great wood shop, aerobics classes, swimming pool and hot tub. Sites are nice and beautifully landscaped. If you have a dog, the dog park is to die for - it's HUGE. We are very happy we chose to come here. Weather is 70s and 80s, sunny, some wind.

RE: Amazon terminates Express's 2010 contract

I'll be interested to see how it works out next year via comments of those working. I was in Coffeyville this season, and I can tell you that Express played an important part in sticking up for the workampers, buffering some of the bad feelings that were developing, etc. Express was not involved in the Reno, NV location, and the stories that came from there by those workampers were NOT good. They had to pay for their own camp site and were sent home before their shift ended so often that many of them were worried about breaking even campsite v. pay. I can't even imagine working that hard and not making a good profit from it. (The work is very physically demanding - I lost 10 pounds, and we were working 11 hour days five days a week). There is constant pressure to "make the numbers" even if you are working at top speed. Maybe it will be okay, but like I said, I'll be interested to hear from those who go back without Express looking out for their interests.

RE: Edisto Beach State Park, SC

Thought of something else: Try the barbeque buffet (it was only $9.25 last year) at Bo-B-Q. It's a little nondescript-looking place but highly rated by those who have been there. What a spread!! It was REALLY good.

RE: New Braunfels

We just left the Texas Hill Country and were surprised at how nice it is and how much there is to do in the area! Like others have said, don't miss Fredericksburg. We went on a winery tour the day after Christmas and there was live music at each stop. It was wonderful! We also checked out Luckenback, the Christmas lights in Johnson City, ate at Cooper's BBQ in Llano. The museum of the pacific war in Fredericksburg is not to be missed, if you have any interest in that at all. We have photos of our two weeks in the area on our blog site if you are interested: www.travelwithwhippets.blogspot.com Look under categories for Texas Hill Country and it will bring up the entries showing the activities we enjoyed there.

RE: Edisto Beach State Park, SC

We were there for two weeks last December and loved every minute of it! Our site was like yours, next to the marsh, and also very close to the ocean. We walked our dogs down the beach every day as far as the inlet and back. I knew ahead of time about the water situation from reading this message board. The dump station was kind of a pain, but we have a motorhome so we just conserved water and unhooked in the middle of our stay to drive over there and back. Being from the midwest, I was surprised at how much the tides affect the topography, both in the marsh and on the beach. We would definitely go back! To view photos of our stay there, go to www.travelwithwhippets.blogspot.com and look at categories under Edisto Island.
