fuster...you bring your 8.1 Litre with a 5er...and I'll bring my D'max with the same 5er and we,ll take a little drive from Pincher Creek, Alberta to Castelgar, BC and we shall then see, who passes who going up a cpl of "little" hills (35-40km @ 8-10% grade), they have along the way.
I dont care how good your tune is, you aint passin this or for that matter just about any 3/4 ton diesel up those hills my friend.

A few hours ago: 745 miles, 33.7 gallons of fuel. That's about 22MPG from a 4WD SuperCab 1-ton pickup. Gotta love the old 12-valve 6BT!

OK - Need some advice: 08 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with 5.7L Hemi - all stock. Engine runs great! 63k miles after 15 mths, pretty much all highway miles - 0 issues / no problems at all, except for mpg when towing! At 70 - 75 mph, I average 16 - 17 mpg. While towing (aerodynamic 23' toy hauler @ 5,500 lbs) at 65 mph it drops to 9 - 10 mpg. Too upside down to trade for diesel -- considering: Cold Air Intake; Performance Exhaust; and Toneau Cover -- intake and exhaust from Mopar to keep my extended warranty in place. Already use synthetic oil & fluids.
You guys think I can get 2 - 4 mpg with these additions???

I think you should save the mod bucks toward the replacement tuck.
2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. Due to EPA regs, I believe your Hemi, like mine, is already about as efficient as it'll ever be. It's running as lean as it can safely run and tuners that you didn't mention advance timing which increases combustion chamber pressure. Your mileage sounds like mine and is pretty good from a 345hp gas V8. I would save that money for other things. LIke the Harley...

I did the mods that you mentioned, as well as a superchips tuner. MPG did not change but I did get better throttle response from the tuner, as well as better shifting. But IMO not a big enough improvement to offset the costs of all the mods.
I would leave it alone as the other said.

Thanks for the comments - just curious, by reading this forum it appears 18 - 20 mpg highway and 12 - 15 mpg towing are reasonable numbers for ~6.0L diesel, and 300,000+ miles is common. Have I accurately stated these opinions?

I'd say your numbers are in the ballpark for a trailer your size and a diesel truck that is a few years old. Newer trucks(2007 and up) I would deduct 10% because of all the new smog junk on them.

The new trucks mileage is fine when towing. It is worse than older trucks when unloaded due to emmisions. Joelgonias mileage seems very good. I have a friend who's 98 5.9 went down to 5-6 towing a 24' boat. 9-10 are numbers you can live with once you get used to towing MPG.

Hey guys not to step on anyones TOES. I have a 99 1 Ton Silverado with the 7.4L vortec. It has been tuned by Blackbear performance. I have a 35 foot carri-lite 5th wheel. Fully loaded about 10,500 so 18,000 combined weight I can pull 75mph anywhere and get 10-10.5 miles to the gallon. Gas motors can make big power and get fuel mileage if you TUNE them. According to blackbear I have upwards of 550 foot pounds of torque and over 400hp with the tuning and mods made. And reliability my last TUNED dually I put 500,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. The NEW diesels such as the cummins and the new Duramax are turning into DOGS with the particulate Diesel filters they are going backwards in mileage as I know several people using them that have seen the mileage fall off. Prior to 2007 that wasn't the case. The newer Silverados with the Allison automatics make trailer brakes pretty much not needed. Would I pull without brakes absolutely NOT. Just my opinion.
