Hello from a fellow ham....no callsign here because I am also an rv dealer and need to keep my identity hidden so I don't break too many of the posting rules.
I'd think REAL hard about that Norcold....
As irritating as this recall is, I still think Dometic is the better of the big 2. Norcold has been plagued with recalls for 20+ years. There are very few Norcold models that haven't had some recall issued.
Dometic has been pretty reliable over the years. Although, they did screw this up in a big way....roughly 900,000 units recalled.....YIKES!!
Anyways...do some research before you make your choice!

Camper Tech....it might not be actual ammonia, but the bottom line for the average camper (which most here are) is the ammonia smell and the yellow-ish stain kinda go together. You can slice and dice and mince words all you want. There is still ammonia, hydrogen and of course the chemical you referred to. When a fridge goes bad, it's either the ammonia that came out, or the hydrogen. Hydrogen is a odorless gas, but ammonia is not. Have you ever stuck your head in a fridge that lost it's ammonia charge? I have....more times than I care to.
I might be wrong about the chemical specifics, but you are 100% correct as the the extra sensor(S) added. There are two thermal cutouts installed. One is a 12v thermo disc attached to the burner tube externally, and the other is a fusible link similar to the atwood water heater sensors. Either of them reaching a specified temperature will shut off the 12v to the fridge and killing the unit, propane shut off, and the board de-energized.
For the record, I am not trying to start an argument, just educating the fine folks here as to the purpose and value of the recall. Dometic might be in the wrong for taking this approach, but I would rather they do that than nothing at all.
Happy TRails!

BALOO28...I've been an RV service tech for over 32 years. I have smelled my share of ammonia leakers....probably from makes you've never even heard of!!
Although I have been a service manager for over 25 years, I still keep as "hands on" as possible. I figure I can't keep my repair team straight if I'm not 100% capable of doing a job myself!!

Our dometic refrig was on the recall list rm2652 and so had the safety shield put on by a approved rv service dealer. Our check light kept comming on after the recall work, but after reseting it to on, it seemed to work alright untill this weekend where the yellow fluid appeared on the floor inside the trailor and apparently also in the back where the fire can start. We are not sure when it happened as we have not used it since the repair. The refrig does not work and is only out of warrenty 2 weeks. Our 5th wheel is a 2006.Dometic is not going to cover it.What kind of company are they? I have reported them to the Federal Trade Commision and the NTSA suggested I call my consumer relation for Florida, which I will do on Monday. Are they waiting untill someone gets killed?

Brokenskeet, sorry to hear about your luck, but as you already stated, you are out of warranty. Why should they fix it for free when it worked during the covered time period? Again, the recall kit does not prevent the cooling unit from failing, only preventing the hydrogen/ammonia spray from hitting the flame while on propane.

After speaking to Dometic concerning my refrigerator, they have settled on replacing the cooling unit however I am responsible for the labour. They said they were during this only because it was only 2 weeks out of warrenty. I believe it broke while still under warrenty, but because we were not using it, we did not notice it was not cooling and it actually broke possibly 2 months agoe. Any newer units out there, need to keep a good eye on their units while not in use so their warrenty does not expire.

I'm glad to hear they did something....but in the third year of ownership, parts are covered, labor is not.

I have a question about this recall. We just got this camper a couple months ago. We got it used, when I called the guy that we got the camper from he stated that he did not get anything on this recall, but when I looked on the internet my camper is under recall. I called a local rv dealer and they stated that they did not know anything about a recall. Called another and they said that since I am the 2nd owner, they would fix this, but I have to pay a service
visit. What do you think? I am completely new to the TT thing. I have camped all my life in a tent/popup....

My refer was on the recall list. I called my dealer,Camping World RV in Syracuse,NY, and they said they had the "kit",and i could bring in my TT at my convenience. We coincided the drop off with the local fall RV Show in Syr. and the dealer said we could pick it up after the show. I thought it would take longer and I was prepared to leave the TT. Actually, I thought the repair would be more involved than a simple metal sheild. I haven't used the rig yet, so we'll keep you all posted.

I made an appointment at Churchville NY. Camping World, 2 weeks in advance. Called the day before, and the day of to confirm. They inspected my camper while I was there. They didn't do the recall, because they didn't have the parts. I was quite upset, as I had taken a day off work to do this.I am a commercial refrigeration mechanic, and work with all types of systems. Would'nt you think I could get the parts and do it myself? I'm sure there is some type of liability issue though!
