After a number of trips overseas, I am not too shocked at the price of fuel. It has been this $$$ (or should I write euros....) for a long time. The other thing you notice when overseas is how small most cars are and how must stuff in a city is accessible via bike, foot, or public transportation. They have adjusted to the high price of gas.
Now it is our turn to "adjust". We will get to the point where we will take a bike (or walk) to the store instead of launching the monster SUV just to pick up a gallon of milk.

A simple proposition......pay in real time, or don't play.
I have a sweet tender nature, however I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions.

Really a pretty simple answer, I don't think anyone has a choice, adjust or not, you need to work, you need to eat, you need to drive

We can't "adjust" as easily in America, as most Europeans have. Apples and oranges, to think we can.
You mention Euros/Europe. Much of their populations live and work in an enclave environ. Many of their goods and services have always been localized. It's a much different way of life there geographically to commute or to procure goods and services for most individuals.
We didn't invent the automobile in America, we just made it affordable for everyone. Our country has been built and predicated on sprawling suburbs now for half a century. My self-employed RT work week commute is never less than 500 miles in any given week, and usually closer to 1,000 miles a week. In America, it's more often more out-of-pocket, for one's commute, goods, and services.
Any American that wants to drive and "launch their monster SUV," that's their right and personal choice, and I'm all for it. They just have to pay the price.
