My Al-Ko 12"-6 lug drums had a tag stating a lug nut torque of 95 ft-lbs.
I check the torque before all trips. Part of my pre-trip inspection.

Thanks jjbirish for the reply to my post concerning lugnut torque. However I did not post those torque specs as fact. I went out of my way to state that I did not remember where I got the numbers, and they are what I use on my TT. I do thank you for posting the correct specs for my TT and I will torque them properly from now on. This is why I joined this forum. If someone has the wrong info there is always somebody to straighten them out. Again, thanks for straightening me out. nuff said

I must be the luckiest dude on the planet. I have been pulling trailers of all descriptions for nigh on to 40 years and have never even owned a torque wrench and never had any problems with trailer wheels, or even a flat for that matter. Maybe I should buy my first lotto ticket!!

Aquarius - my reply wasn’t meant to be smart although I guess it did sound that way… I think the nuf said prompted the type of response more than the rest of what you said… the fact that you check them at any torque you are at the top of the class in my opinion …
Robsouth - I have the same or more years towing, and more miles towing than not, and I have never found a lose lug nut yet either… I still check it with a torque wrench on a regular basis and if I didn’t have a torque wrench I would just check them with a lug wrench… I guess it is just habit for me but when I used to spend s lot of time in a RV service garage I managed to see quite a few ruined studs caused be lose lug nuts… saw several where the wheel left the trailer but they were all bearing related… one guy drove 60 miles on a blown bearing and there was nothing left to hold the wheel on at all, but it was still there… it was so hot the trailer caught fire when he parked it…
As far a torqueing wheels, in the forty + years of camping I don’t recall ever seeing any one check their lug nuts, as a matter of fact could count the times anyone checked their tires for cracking or PSI in the tires when hitching up and leaving… it think for some their check is - is the slide and awning in, ok lets get going then…

Kevin from K wrote: Not real confident of torquing often any more. Lost a rear wheel on our 3 month old 5er this weekend. Torqued the lugs to 120 fp right before I left the house. Made it 20 miles before the wheel came off on the on ramp to the highway. 5 of the 6 studs were mostly stripped, the 6 sheared off. Did a considerable amount of damage to the driverside rear of the camper. Was not fun changing out the drum and putting the spare on by the side of the road in rush hour.
These were aluminum wheels so I was really concerned about over-torquing them. I've been pulling trailers, boat, camper etc. with steel wheels for many years. Never torqued any of them. Just tightened them up snug like a car tire. Never once had a problem.
I might trade these aluminum wheels out for some good old steel painted wheels.
Factory wheels or dealer add on? I think the dealer may have over torqued the studs on initial installation. I could be wrong also. The biggest trouble is the air guns that can easily go 150 to 250 ft lbs in the hands of a novice.

IIRC that is also the range for my 14" TT wheels. I too torque to the middle of the range.
