A fellow in the campground told me he uses heating oil instead of diesel fuel in his truck. I don't intend to try this, but has anyone ever heard of this before? He claims to increase his MPG by 2-3 when pulling his fifth wheel.

In most jurisdictions, heating oil is diesel fuel..........

heating oil and diesel fuel are the same except for the dye they put in diesel fuel, and if your buddy gets pulled over by DOT he is going to jail and getting one hell of a fine. Heating oil can only be used on offroad farm equipment

Very interesting. From his comments I got the idea he dodesn't want any witnesses; "just go behind the building, fill up, move my truck and then go inside and pay."

What is the reason for the dye in the diesel fuel?

Red Dye in the fuel is to show that no road taxes have been paid on it. Both are the same, although I am not sure that heating oil is required to be ultralo sulpher. It is a major fine if you get caught running dyed fuel on the road, not hundreds but probably thousands. A motor home may get away with it, but a pickup with a 5th wheel or a ball in it is a prime target. If you are to cheap or stupid to buy the taxed stuff getting caught just once will put you way behind in the game. You are getting the benefit from the tax. Do the right thing please.

Sorry to hijack the thread with a tax rant. I don't like them either, but we all benefit from them.

The dye in the fuel indicates to those that "Dip the tank" that it's for off road use only and road taxes have not been charged.

Around here people have done the opposite in times of need and burnt Diesel in their furnace. As other said.. it's pretty much the same thing..

About the same but the fine for getting caught running off road fuel on the road is very stiff. Around here a farmer got caught a few years ago and the fine was a couple of thousand dollars.

And to make matters worse, it's not a fine, but an "administrative penalty", and there is no appeal.

Aside from the potential fines or penalties of getting caught running it, if it is truly "heating fuel" it may not be filtered as stringently micron wise as other diesel fuels. I wouldn`t use it simply for that reason.

If you mixed half diesel and half heating oil, would they be able to tell?
