She is wondering what will be available for her when we start semi full-timing. I have found a few websites that offer audio book downloads. She thought the Cracker Barrel had a Book program. DW gets hers on Ebay and has been happy with her purchases. She will collect up a bunch after we have used them and resell them on EBAY... I loved it. I think they still let you rent in any location and drop off in another. You can download the audible files to your ipod, your Blackberry or Palm, and even some TomTom GPS models. Via TomTom, you can broadcast the book over your vehicle radio. You can do this too with devices that connect your blackberry or ipod to your tape player. You can also access your on-line bookshelf via your blackberry and download the book directly, otherwise, you load to your device via your comuter/laptop. I like playing the book over my TomTom because the voice directions and the book are coordinated- when the TomTom needs to speak directions, the book pauses, so they are not both "talking" at the same time. But I'm alone in the car for that. If I was with others, I'd probably use a different device with earbuds, unless everyone wanted to listen to my book. I've got hundreds of books in my electronic bookshelf now, but no clutter. For the same reason, I also use e-reader. I download books to my Blackberry or Treo and read them on the device screen. I can carry a dozen books right on my phone. Nothing to take up extra room in my briefcase. I can read in the dark without a light. I can change the font size. It did not take long to get used to reading on the small screen, and I'm an avid reader. It's at ereader.com and the prices are quite good- most of the books I buy are under $7- less than a paperback at the grocery store. Public libraries are now starting to offer these electronic books- both the audible and print style, so check with your library. You can even access them from home without having to go into the library to do the download.
