The driver side battery of my F350 diesel has a plastic cover on the battery that prevents one from checking the water level.

Anyone know what gives here? Can I take this cover off without risk?

I believe that the cover covers up some electronics that need to be protected. It is a pain, but haven't found a better alternative than to pull the terminals to remove it.

Sure you can, you just need to keep the wedge in place to hold the battery. You need a long socket extension to get to it if you want to replace the battery. (I just did this) The wedge is between the battery and the fender.

The cover has two snaps on each side (North South, not East West)

There is nothing under that cover besides the battery. On my cover like yours, there a tab holding the Positive cable up.

Looks like it will pry off with a screwdriver. Let us know what you find.

Just tried a second time to remove that driver side battery cover, trying the techniques you suggested. NG without removing the battery cables, which I do not prefer.

The driver side battery looks like the other one, in other words caps over each of three cells to add water. Also each battery has a plastic "eye" that shows some color based on the level of the water. The passenger color looks the same as the driver, so I must assume the driver battery is likewise OK for now.

Lord knows why they made this cover so difficult to remove for normal maintenance. I plan to ask the tech about this at my next 15k service, coming to a wallet like mine soon.

More to come....

The cover is not hard to remove, you just have to dissconnect the cables. Pretty straight forward, pull cables remove clip and pop clips and up she comes. The eye in the battery are not for water level. They are for state of charge. Green okay red low black dead. I never trust them. You shouldnt have to check the water level in them. They aint quite like the batteries in the camper.

OK OK OK. Maybe I will remove the battery cables. I hate the possibility of sparks in my hair. And reprogramming the radio and transmission.

Seriously tho, I haven't seen the question of dual batteries in a diesel addressed in the manual. Any danger removing the + cable of one battery while the other is connected? Or take them both off first, in either order? I tread carefully in these simple areas, as one can make a complex costly mess very quickly.

Thanks for the reply.

You are going to need a very long socket extension to get the drivers side batter out. Once you take the cover off (should take about 1 min or less) you need a long socket to get to the batter wedge retainer.

Just an FYI.
