I swear I didn't have a clue. I picked up a dog a couple of months ago that was on its last leg. The vet said I needed to wait until she gained weight to have her fixed. Well, I guess we waited to long. This morning I heard the cry of puppies. So what's the problem?
I have never had puppies before and don't know what to do. She cleared a space in the bamboo hedge and is in there with the pups. She took me to see them and it looks like two are dead.
What do I do? I feel like an idiot but I never knew she was pregnant. Help!!!

Oh, my..... How many puppies? I imagine you bring them inside. I don't know to much about puppies, but I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice here.

I think there are five. I heard that if you touch the puppies she will abandon them, don't know if that is true.
I would like to get her on the porch because we will have rain tomorrow and I want to bury the pups that didn't make it.

Make a bed for her on the porch, move the puppies but make sure she is with you when you do it. We grew up on the farm and had dogs and puppies all the time. We would find them wherever the mother decided to have them and move them to the barn or whatever shelter we let them use. If the mother knows you, she will not object to your smell on the puppies.

I would confine the mother while I put the puppies in a study box that is lined with towels warmed up from the dryer - towels should be warm and comfortable not scalding hot. I would then take both the mom and the puppies to my local vet to have them checked out. The first couple hours/days are critical to the survival of the puppies. It is important that newborn puppies are kept warm and dry. Your vet then can walk you through what you need to do for both the mom and the puppies. We always house our puppies in a quiet room (spare bathroom). We put up a pressure gate to keep the mom in the room, but she has room to get away from the puppies if necessary. Puppies are normally in a large oversized box about 4 to 5 inches high (low enough for mom to get in and out easily, but keeps the puppies all together. Box is lined with towels. As the puppies get older we open up on end of the whelping box so that the puppies can venture out in the room. If we have any puppies that are weak, we have hung a heat lamp from the ceiling of the room about 5 to 6 feet high to help keep the puppies warm.

So far so good. I have the four survivors in a box with towels on the porch. Momma dog is there with them. She isn't the gentlest creature in the world. She also needs a good bath. Can I give her a bath?
Thanks for all the help. This freaks me out!

I'd hold off at least a few days on the bath. She (and the pups) need to stay warm, and a bath won't help achieve that. And she needs some very good nutrition now with lots of calories, especially if she was underweight to begin with. A good puppy food (yes, for the mom) would be good. And keep her a good supply of fresh, clean water.
