From the previous posts it appears the people that don’t go poopie in their RV are numerous. We encountered a couple that followed this practice. Nicknamed him NO Number 2. I didn’t understand, he insisted on a Thetford Aria toilet for his RV? This toilet has a full size elongated bowl and accepts common hardware store seats and lids. Go figure?

When we're on the road we only need to dump once a week or so. On those nights I will not need to dump, I take a cheaper site and it's often a site that's closer to the river, lake, etc. Also, I connect my sewer hose only when I intend to dump. Why give ants and such another avenue into the motorhome.

I heard some fellow rv'er mention the sun's deterioration of the hose if connected....another mentioned crows liking to peck at the hose...someone else expressed concern over sewer gas buildup or some such thing, and, this one really had me giggling....something might crawl up out of the sewer....
I don't have a greywater holding tank, so I hook up.

The only time I won't hook up to a sewer is if the connection is higher than the sewer outlet on my fiver and I can't get the proper angle in order to dump sewage. This happened to me once and I thought I could get away with it by pulling the release valve and manually raising and lowering the hose while dumping. Guess what? This tactic doesn't work because it creates some kind of vacuum in the system that eventually causes the sewage to exit the holding tank somehow and collect in the belly of the RV (if the underside is enclosed).
Fortunately for me (and my neighbors) I didn't attempt to dump black water, just gray. As I drove away from that site gray water seeped out of my fiver's underbelly and eventually dissipated along the road.
LESSON: Always make sure your sewer hose has a downward angle to the sewer connection.
