You obviosly haven't read too many forums. I was going to reply in further detail, but I won't waste my time talking to people who know everything.

I've read enough to know that what I typed is as close to gospel as you will get on duramaxforum.com and dieselplace.com. As a Dmax fan and previous owner, I have done my research.

I'll give Hypertech another vote. If you add more than 75 hp I would really reccomend the TransGo Jr as a precaution. Especially if you drive it hard. I won't go into EGT but I can tell you I have a friend with 06' and 120K miles on a Dmax + Hypertech. Pulls a trailer delivering truck parts M-F. No problems with the engine. It has had 2 rear ends and 1 trans rebuild.

I would not use a programmer at all. None of them seem to be very friendly to the truck especially shifting is awful. I have tried several and gave up for various reasons. Edge had all kinds of problems. Two other downloadable tuners made the ride awful. The custom tuning has turned out to be a better option.

jferrell -

You probably didnt expect your simple question to turn into this kind of thread.

It may be the case that only 3 tuners were used in the posted shootout, but the tuner is only hardware. The tunes are what are important. They used 3 tuners and 3 tunes within each mfg - the most popular from my readings on the forums for the past 8 years.

They used 3 tunes from each programmer - thats 9 tunes. They used them on the big 3 diesel truck mfgs. Thats 27 tests. They provided road test, solo and towing, dyno and dragstrip test results. Now its about 100+. My comment is if someone feels cheated - go run your own tests and publish them.

My suspicion is this was not a trivial test procedure.

Tuners are great. You can leave your vehicle totally stock and gain lots of very practical useable power. You can honestly increase mileage.

I agree with those suggesting gauges because when you start pushing your vehicle harder (and you will ) you will better understand whats happening and when. EGT's are pretty instant. The gauge goes up like a tach but it takes a bit of time to heat the motor internal parts - thats what you want to protect.

I suggest finding a good GM/Chev diesel forum and ask around - toss out the upper 10% and lower 10% and keep focused on what your intentions are. You dont need to rebuild your motor to benefit from a good tuner. Just remember everytime you get on it, its your money - fuel, wear, etc...

If you do not plan on adding EGT gauge and larger exhaust, leave it stock.

I run the Predator in my 05 Duramax, and it works very good.

Adding anymore than 40 HP you are asking for transmission issues.

You can add 400 HP to this engine without ANY worries about the tranny. It is an Allison for crying out loud !!!!!

Do you think that a tranny that is used in a tank would get hurt by a hopped up diesel engine?????

I love how people think that just because it has the name Allison it's univerally the same trans used in class 8 trucks and now even tanks! It's a good transmission, but not bulletproof. Throw an extra 100 hp at it and watch the torque converter fail miserably.

The parts on all the big 3 trucks are closely matched. They do not put a 500 hp transmission on a 300 hp engine. Run any part for more than what it is rated and it will have an early failure. My truck is stock and will remain that way, if it isn't powerful enough you bought the wrong truck for the job.
