Saw on the news last night that Ford has again expanded its recall for fires being caused by cruise control. As I understood it, motorhome chasis thru 2003 were added to the recall which now makes it the largest recall in Ford history. I think the latest year posted was 2003 and they had seperate recall lists for the econoline and the motorhome chasis. Never a dull moment.

Clyde - thanks for the post - I had the fix done today. My chat with the service manager took longer than the five minutes for the fix.

Had mine done at first voluntary recall 4 years ago. Call the Ford dealer with VIN # and they can tell you over the phone if it is done or needs to be done. Do not call the 1-800 number, its automated and after 6 attempts they still could not get my VIN right.
Happy camper!

Do you know what they actually do to fix this problem?

As I understand it, they add a fused harness to the switch, so if there is a problem, it blows the fuse instead of starting a fire. I'm sure there's a much more technical explanation, but to the best of my knowledge, that boils it down.

The recall list I saw goes back to 1992 for the E350. Mine is a 1991 bought used a few years ago - am I safe? I don't really use cruise that much anyway.

You might still check with your local Ford dealer and be sure. Whether you use the cruise or not, on the models in question, it's a fire hazard. Not something I feel comfortable taking lightly!

from wht I understand the brake fluid leaks into the brake release switch on the cruise control and shorts it out causing a wire to catch on fire ,,

I think this is the same recall that I got on my Ford F250 pickup. The recall notice says that a fire can start even if the engine is off. They recommended parking the truck away from any buildings so it wouldn't burn them down if the truck caught on fire. I think that was supposed to incentivize me to get it fixed. The service guy walked out to my truck in the parking lot, raised the hood, fiddled for about a minute, then came back in and said it was fixed. Painless.

I just got one for my truck. Seems to affect a lot of vehicles with or without cruise control. Later, Dave.

Speed Control Deactivation Switch Recall (09S09)

Speed Control Deactivation Switch Recall (09S09)

Ford is recalling all remaining vehicles – approximately 4.5 million U.S. vehicles – equipped with Texas Instruments speed control deactivation switches.

While the data show the majority of the vehicles being recalled do not pose a significant safety risk, we are recalling the vehicles to reassure customers and eliminate any future concerns.

This recall affects older models, including discontinued vehicles. The majority is greater than 10 model years old, with some up to 18 model years old.
