I know this sounds like a stupid question but when you are traveling around with a dog how do you tour things? I am assuming the dog will not be allowed in places...do you leave them behind in the camper? We are doing a cross country trip on the southern route leaving the beginning of Jan. and planning on taking our dog (golden retriever) with us but really have been trying to figure out how we are going to manage this... any suggestions!!!

We have taken a couple of coast to coast loops...and have dealt with the dogs in a number of ways depending on the situation and weather conditions. They are very well behaved, and very use to traveling and camping.
left them in the trailer
left them in the truck (canopy)
left them for the day at a local boarding kennel.

We have never left them for longer than 5-6 hours at the very most.

Have a good trip.

Having a dog limits you on doing lots of things longer that a few hours. Our dog like to travel and if we can drive and it is cool enough, she much prefers to go with us in the car. This works out for many things. However things like all day cruises are just not possible unless she is boarded which we have never liked to do. In the past we have left them home with a dog and house setter.

Same for us. Above all, we adjust our plans to fit their needs.

Don't have a dog, but friends have left a recorder going in the RV to see if the dog barked or howled, etc. They did this for just an hour or two to test the pet. If they were gone more than 6 to 7 hours, they looked for someone to "pet sit." They checked with the RV park and they had resources.

We do a variety of things.

If the weather is nice and what we're doing is conducive to bringing the dogs with us, then they come along. We get them out when possible, they stay in the car when they can't. On a recent trip to Cape Cod, we brought them on the ferry to Martha's Vineyard with us. We knew it would be a long day, much too long to leave them crated in the RV. So they came with us, we brought their food, biscuits and water along, and they did just fine.

If we can't bring the dogs along and are only going to be gone a few hours, then they stay in the RV. They're crated, the TV and AC fan are left on for white noise, and they're each given a Kong toy stuffed with chicken and cheese or something similarly yummy.

A couple of times we've boarded them for a day, but that's the very last resort as it stresses them out much more than the first two options.

Same here.

We take Hershey for a good long walk before leaving him alone. We also close the blinds so he can't see outside and turn on the TV. He does very well and we only had one complaint when he was a puppy! (This was from a guy who said our dog was keeping his cat awake.)

We have 2 well trained Golden Retrievers and did a 21 day trip across Canada/US last year and never had a problem. They even came with us on the Tram in Banff. We would ask at restaurants if we could bring them on the patio while we ate and never had any objections. Other than stores that sell food, I only shop where my dogs are welcome, as they are with me all the time. We have a local Home Hardware that has a sign on their door, advising patrons to bring their dogs into the store and not to leave them in their vehicle. Guess which hardware store gets my business? I never leave the dogs in the RV during warmer weather, in the event that the air shuts down (blown fuse, someone unplugging by accident, power outage, etc)and will leave them in the (ventilated) truck or RV during cooler weather, for only short periods of time (1 to 2 hrs).

We just returned from our first vacation without the dogs in 3 years and I missed them terribly and wish I would have taken them. We get much more exercise when the dogs are with us and tend to travel at a more relaxed pace (stopping for walks more frequently). They haven't left my side since we returned home, 2 days ago. Take your dog with you and enjoy your time with him/her, while you and your dog are both healthy enough to enjoy it.

Yep, same as above. We golf and leave them in the unit while we do so.
