Now to go off on a tangent.

In Canada we have 5 major banks. Credit unions & caisse populaires (northern Ontario & Quebec) make up the rest of the banking industry.

There are many, many independent banks in the US besides the "majors". I think w/ their size the Cdn banks can pick & choose which companies they deal w/. I know the feds did front them some money earlier this year, however none of "our" banks have failed or needed bailouts. In fact they have made money (albeit less than in previous years) this year.

Credit goes to collective Canadian governments for putting useful regulation in place and for declining to take it away.
