Waving is a habit I acquired from years of motorcycling on several brands. In rural areas, like where we live, it is common to wave at other vehicles, if you drive a pick-up. I notice that when we are on the back roads in other parts of the country you will get a wave of a passing vehicle when you are driving a pick-up. We started traveling with the trailer two summers ago and if I have been waived at on the highway from other RV’ers I missed it. Reflections from the windshields in a lot of cases will keep you from seeing the driver of another vehicle.

I'm still waving. Hope springs eternal. My husband laughs at me, but every once in a while some one waves back. Montana got the most waves.

On our way to Morro Bay today 2 drivers in the motorhomes waved back at me. Something else happened that I had never seen before. We were going into a curve and met a motorhome that blinked his lights 3 times at us. My DH said maybe he was just saying hi but 3 blinks used to mean there was a highway patrol or police ahead. Sure enough when we got around the curve a highway patrolman was checking everyones speed.

DW and I just had this conversation a few weeks back. We were driving down the road and was discussing the way motorcyclists wave to other cyclists (arm extended down, two fingers extended with a one or two flick of the wrist). I told her "We need to develop a wave that RVers can use." I came up with a modified Hawiian wave (thumb extended, index/middle/ring fingers curled in, pinky extended) with a twist of the wrist. We were traveling from Arkansas to Wisconsin and every RV we met, I used the new developed RV wave. Needless to say, my wrist was pretty sore by the time the trip was over.
Maybe we should "officially" adopt that wave here on the forum. What do you say?

I was thinking about an iPhone app, or little wireless device, for RV'rs that "beeps" as we pass each other and displays:

"Sally and Tom from FL (rv.net: Mile_Man)"

You know, where technology once again takes out the social interaction.

In my area, if you wave and they wave back...they're a neighbor. If they don't wave they're not from the area.
When traveling I usually get waves back from trailerites. Very seldom from a motormome. Wonder why!?

I think waving in general, is more prevalent in the South, and out in the country,if you get around the big Cities, DC, Norfolk, Charlotte, Atlanta, you find a lot more of the middle finger waves, around here, we wave at everybody, no matter what they're driving, it may be an index finger wave, or a full hand wave, but it's a wave, no matter if they wave back or not.

I am a waver too, if I happened to be one who did not wave back at you, it was unintentional and we were not being rude, and I don't take it that the other RVer was being rude. I was distracted or the tint on your windows made you hard to see. Sometimes I see a person wave at me and by the time I wave back, it is too late....you did not see me wave, then I feel bad. Personally, I will try harder to pay more attention. If you see Sooner Schooner on the highway, please wave.

We drove about 8,000 miles last year, and tried waving to oncoming motorhomes similar to ours...a Class A. We probably waved maybe three dozen times when lighting and traffic conditions permitted them to see us. We got return waves about a third of the time, were ignored a third of the time, and we got quizzical looks a third of the time, as if they didn't have a clue why we were waving at them.

Now, waving to these oncoming drivers is no small feat, considering I'm driving at near a-mile-a-minute speed, in three lanes of traffic, towing, and all the while answering calls on the cell phone, snacking bits of fruit in a bowl on the doghouse, working the MP3 player with 5000 songs, reading the GPS system and keeping up with the talk radio traffic announcements. I wish they would better appreciate my efforts by acknowledging me in my motorhome.

I used to wave a lot, but nowadays I have to use the free hand for "texting" while on the road. Maybe I should look up once in a while while driving down the road to see if anyone is waving. I'll make that a new years resolution, Wave more and Text less... Nah!!
