Towing an FJ Cruiser, what about getting a tow dolly and just disconnecting the rear driver line. Then there is no modifications and the warranty would not be voided by adding a driveline disconect? I seethe FJ cruiser weighs in at 4300lbs and the tow dolly at 550lbs. Just under the towing limit of 5000lbs. Plus the tow dolly will have brakes , so no after market braking system. I only would need this setup once or twice a year.

I like my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Hook up the towbar, Put the Transfer Case in Neutral, the transmission in 5th or 6th gear, the switch in Off/Steering NOT locked, check the lights, and drive away.
Toyota Land Cruiser? Is that the one that they have been having trouble with the hood and/or front fenders cracking?

Went and test drove the FJ cruiser. Drove well, lots of power and good ride. But the visiblity was terrible. Starting with the compass, level on the dash blocking front view, didn't like the mirrors, blind spots all over the place and the spare blocks a good portion of the rear window. Fj cruiser is out, I'm sad.
The wrangler looked like just what it is a jeep. Not for our everyday driving. Bad to square one.

[quote=brobox]Hated a drive shaft disconnect?? Can you open a jar of peanut butter, or do you need help? A disconnect is as about as easy as it comes. Myself and thousands of others do not have a problem with ours. Why is it only you, on this forum, that seems to have ever had a problem with a simple drive shaft disconnect??

And you own a drive what????? Let me guess, it's a plastic, now orphaned car, with no ground clearance that is great for going to Wal-Mart and out to dinner on paved roads. Have you ever been off road to enjoy wildlife or go trout fishing in a pristine stream? Probably not. Drive what YOU want and let us drive what WE want. Or we can go to some of my off road spots and let's see how "pretty" your car is when we're finished. []

I don't always agree with Bumpy, and at times I find him downright annoying, but THAT, sir or madam, is just over the top too much! Besides, I agree that any toad I have will be able to be towed WITHOUT modification, or it will go on the trailer.
By the way, I'LL take that challenge. But, if you are driving an FJ, YOU can follow ME, so I can tow you when your Toy breaks. However, we would have to meet in Moab; I think Metal Masher would be an appropriate venue, and I can't afford to make the trip right now.

Das,
Even towing once or twice a year, the rest of the time you have to find somewhere to store the dolly when not in use.
Not to mention the extra hassle when towing.
Plus maintenance of the dolly.
IMHO, I like the Roadmaster setup I had done on ours.
Everything either stays on the rear of the MH or goes in the garage until we need it.
Also, the suggestion I extended to you in my previous post still stands.

Does the FJ Cruiser still require premium fuel?

Even the earlier FJ Cruisers would run on regular. Toyota had them EPA certified using premium fuel, so they had to list that on the spec sheet and on the gas lid.
The engine computer was designed to handle both grades of fuels.

I went through the same process this time last year. I thought the FJ would be a cool vehicle to tow behind our MH. Granted, it is borderline ugly at certain angles, but cool none the less. I went and drove one and I had the same response you did. The visibility from all angles was horrible. I think I can see better out the rear of my 45' MH than you can in the FJ. Ir needs some big mirrors or a camera to assist with backing up. But even with the poor visibility, I still considered it. Then there was the premium fuel issue and the driveshaft disconnect - a total unknown to me. In the end, I ran out of time and decided to go the easy route and bought a Jeep Wrangler Sahara. With the Wrangler, towing is a breeze. It's an easy and fast process to connect and disconnect. The down side is - it's a Jeep. It will have rust on it the day you drive it home, the sheet metal is paper thin, the engine has no power and the gas mileage is poor. That said, I really don't mind driving it. It's fairly comfortable and the visibility is excellent. If you get one, be sure to get a hardtop. The soft top is a pain to put up and down and is extremely noisy on the highway. I thought I'd drive it with the top down in the summer, but it's too noisy, windy and too hard to put up/down. Oh. And you'll need 2 cans of black spray paint (one high temp) to combat the rust on the muffler and undercarriage.

The wrangler is off the table and probably the FJ cruiser too. FJ cruiser will be too hard to get in and out of in a 5-10 years. So we are looking at the Ford F150. Lots of bells and whistles for the same price. No 4wd cause of the mpg. They re really discounting them, big time. Wonder if everythings going hybrid. I know I can't tow the F150 as it exceeds my 5000lb tow capacity.

Hi from MN - we tow a 2002 Jeep Wrangler behind our 2004 Newmar Scotsdale 35' gasser - 8.1 litre engine - - with auto tranny and four wheels down - no problem at all. In fact the Jeep is for sale - less than 24,000 miles on it - two tops - White - tan interior. And all professionally wired and hooked up for towing. We are gonna go with a mid-size pickup instead. Like a Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon.
