Up, I was driving on I 40 today after a rally. I went by the location of the first set of signs showing the road closed as they were setting them up. I got to drive a bit more than I wanted to today... Oh well.

Thanks to all for the information about the closing of I 40. We are in Maggie Valley and will be headed home Tuesday. Can anyone tell me about how Hwy 74 to Chatterton is. We are driving a 40 ft DP with a toad. Thanks for your help

Hello, I'm a little familiar with the area, my wife has family up that way. You have 2 options the route that you were speaking of and you can also take 74 to 441/23 to 64 thru Murphy, N.C./ Cleveland, TN. Long drive either way.

5:00 Asheville news. NCDOT say's it'll take 2-10 million dollars to clean the rock slide up over a 3 month period...It is "speculated" that it will take 3 months for the clean up...slide extends over 100' up the side of the mountain and spilled over a 150' across and up and down that part of I40,( well into the West bound lanes)). They say they'll have to build a road up the side of this mountain so that they can get heavy equipment in to remove and/or blowup some of the "housesize" boulders that are laying across the road and that are still sitting on the side of the mountain, still very unstable at this time....You can go to WLOS.com and see more than several recommendations for alternate routes...BE FOREWARNED; If your going to be towing on any of these "alternate routes" and your not sure what your going to run into, check with some of us that know the area so that we can help you get on the right roads if your towing a larger TT or 5er or driving a large Moho............

Thanks to all of you for your help. We will try 74 to Chattanooga. Think it might be to much grade on 441 over the Mt.

Can't tell by your sig what your towing or drving, but your probably right. The road over the mountain is curvy and a tad on the narrow side. I'd play it safe and go the route you've chosen. Much as I hate to do it, when we go to Sevierville next month, if the road isn't open, we'll take I26 to I81 to I40, "better safe than sorry".

We are in a 40 ft DP with a toad, BIL is pulling a 36ft fiver. Do you think Hwy 74 is doable with these?
