I'm also going to check out the various websites and look at what y'all are using. We have been buying direct and paying out of pocket also. It seems that the local medical suppliers want you to go to the doctor and get a new prescription. Last time we did that... spent $75 to see the doctor just to get him to scribble on a piece of paper. They tried to get DH to agree to a whole new sleep study, etc. He declined. All he wanted was to be able to replace the hose and masks as needed. ResMed is who we go through currently and they're cheaper than insurance charges. When DH had to replace his cpap we were able to use the original prescription. Local medical suppliers wouldn't do that.
Has anyone figured out why it's necessary to replace the masks every six months? What happens to them?
cts
it is not necessary to replace them every 6 months. that is what the insurance will pay for so of course the suppliers want to do it.
and my hospital supply will gladly replace mine every 6 months with no referral, doctor's Rx, etc.
I was told that medicare/insurance might periodically want a new sleep study to determine that one still needs to use CPAP. I haven't experienced this yet myself however.
When I wanted to buy a O2 concentrator I just had my doctor fax a RX to supplier and bought it.

Just looked at Direct supply website. Will have to show that to DH when he gets home. His poor nose is sore between the eyes. The upper part of the mask just seems to press a little more there for some reason. He's tried all kinds of adjustments. Even tried using bandaids once. The glue just made things worse.
The new gel type masks look interesting. It looks like they would just conform to your face pretty nicely and without pressure points. Anyone using the "comfort gel" types??

my first mask was comfort gel. felt fine. I just keep experimenting with a different one every 6 months. prefer the "freedom" of the nasal pillows ones however.

I just talked to a person at CPAPPro, they don't make a mouth piece that would work with upper denture out. they supply an extra set of nose pieces, but not the mouth piece. they say mouthpiece should be replaced every few months.

Sounds like DH would leave in dentures as usual...but having to get a new mouthpiece every few months sounds like a bit of pain in the neck. I don't think DH knew about that. I'll have all kinds of info to tell him when he gets home.
so you've used the comfort gel? It didn't hurt you anywhere? How are your experiments going?

I doubt you would have to get a new mouthpiece that often, unless you put it on a beaver who gnaws thru it all night.
comfort gel didn't hurt, I just tried the nasal pillows and like them, with my only issue being the strap riding up on the back of my head. if I roll over against it I can feel air getting by so I just wiggle it back into position.

W6PEA,
Tell the employees at Apria the Nasal Pillows will hold 30cmH2O. Mine held it for about 40 minutes. They can call the head man for Apria Respiratory in Sacramento, Robert (Bob) LaQuay at 916-286-3568. I emailed Bob a copy of my Encore Pro showing the Resmed Swift II worked fine. The SV initiated about 870 breaths for me at that pressure. I am titrated at 8 EPAP, 12 Min IPAP and 30 Max IPAP (because they don't have 35 cmH2O as an option).
I have the Medicare codes for various equipment. It can be found on the internet. Just google it. As you know, Medicare will pay for a new mask every 6 months and TWO nasal pillows a month. I also get 2 Bacterial filters a month, I can get two of the black foam and white
"Hepa" type filters as well. I don't get them, but Medicare will pay for it. (So Apria told me.)
"I got the same bovine excrement from Apria about not being able to switch masks. I went out and bought one from look here out of pocket that was three years ago. I have not had any problems since. Apria claimed that because of my pressure settings that a Nasal Pillow would not work. My setting is 20cm on Cpap. " On page 7 of the Swift II User manual, it lists Therapy Pressure as 4 to 20 cmH2O. When I ran the extreme pressures it did not wake my wife, nor me for that matter and I don't remember having any extreme leaks show up on the Encore Pro. So the Swift II HELD the pressure.
