I've seen several references to spraying a bleach solution on the campground spigot to disinfect it. I'm still here without having done that all these years but figure it falls in the might help can't hurt category.

But I wonder about alternatives to a bleach solution. Downsides I see to the bleach deal are a limited shelf life so I'd have to remember to make a new batch and it can mess up your clothes pretty good (don't ask). What about Lysol or something?

I'm trying sodium dichlor for sanitizing my fresh water tank, will also sanitize my hoses at the beginning on the season.. thought about using a spray bottle on the spigot but have to figure the amt to put in the spray bottle (it's 1/4 teaspoon per 40 gallons - so like 3 grains of sodium dichlor per bottle hahahaha) maybe I will just opt for a lysol wipe or something...

Plain old hydrogen peroxide will work just fine and it doesn't need mixing nor does it need replacing every 24 hours like mixed bleach/water does.

I just turn spigot on and run some water out, sort of wash off threads. but I don't think that a full strength clorox solution in a sprayer would lose enough strength thru a season to matter much.

I keep a spritzer "pen" of alcohol based hand sanitizer in the water bay and another in the waste bay. The water bay one is used to spray the faucet and hose fittings before hooking up.

Pretty much a waste of time to spray spigots. Bleach would need to remain in contact for a period of time to be of much use. You're right though, it won't hurt anything as long as it DOESN'T stay in contact for long but it is highly corrosive if it does. That's why they recommend bleach be diluted when used to sanitize water systems.

Try household hydrogen peroxide. Just be sure to store it in an opaque spray bottle.

Get a package of disinfecting wipes. Kind of like baby wipes only made to disinfect surfaces.
Handy for the campground restrooms as well.
But I must say, I am still here after 56 years of never disinfecting any public spigot or facility.
Can't remember ever getting ill after their use.
