Thanks for any info.

Larry,

Because my mother lives in Laguna Hills (1/2 way between SD & LA) for the last 10 years, we have driven from Dallas and back twice each year. Once during the summer and always in January for her BD (she is 98). We've been 3 times this year. We just got back from there last Friday (10/23).

During January, we always take I-20 to I-10 to I-8 to I-805 then up the I-5 and off at El Toro.

In all of those 20+ trips, we have only had 1 bad drive (home). A couple of years ago, in Febrary, we hit a horriffic ice storm all across NM and west TX. Because our Suburban has 4-WD, we made it fine. I'd have probably stopped in the MH.

I would not worry about bad weather. It is what it is. If you hit a bad driving condition, pull into a town or rest stop and wait it out. It'll all be gone the next day.

Lemmie know if/when you come through Dallas. I'd love to drive down to I-20 to meet you both.

Tim

Thanks Tim, I will be sure to get in touch as we come through Dallas. Would like to meet you and the DW. I really appreciate the help you have given toward the Miata. It has been a joy to tow and tour in. We really enjoyed driving the Pacific Coast Hwy from San Simeon to Carmel. Touring the beautiful coast with the top down was great.

Just curious...

You live in NW Georgia. Why not just hop up to Chattanooga and take US 72 to Memphis and then take I-40 straight out? I-40 will bring you in on the north side of LA.

I took a similar route from Huntsville, AL to Redding, CA back in 1999. Great views and no LA traffic.

My concern is the weather while driving. I traveled alot of that route in May. Some of the terrain is high. That means below freezing temps along with chance of sleet and snow.

Should you decide the I40, be advised Arizona, due to budget problems has closed 13 rest areas. All the rest areas on I40 in Arizona are closed.
