Isn't that what we have all been sharing? Who would think otherwise? So many of us have "been there", some of us more often than others, but we (as in a collective group) have been in this position.... and it is always an extremely difficult decision. We share so much during this time.... this time of decisions, this time of farewells, this time of heartbreak, this time of our final act of love.
Once again, my thoughts are with you and your husband Carol....and of course with your Winston. Hugs from Oklahoma.

Carol and Jerry,
We have been where you are w/ our 16 year old terrier mix and to be honest, we waited too long. I was more ready than my husband the last few days. When we did make the decision (it was a Labor Day weekend,) the look that dear dog gave me as we were leaving the house was sooo pitiful. It was a big request for relief and I honestly told him "you will be fine in just a few minutes." And we was - we were not, but we did the best thing for him. It's not easy. Good luck - we are all thinking about you, I know.

All of us that love are pets have been down that rode. 2 years ago I had almost the same dilemma with a Collie Andy. I had canceled my vacation to stay home with him (Andy was not able to travel). He would seem to get a little better then have a set back. I can not tell you how many trips I made to the vet to visit with him. I did not want to make the wrong decision. The entire time I was at home on vacation I thought long and hard on what to do. To this day sometimes I wonder what if. In the long run I feel I made the best decision for Andy. I know this can be gut wrenching. All I can provide is moral support because the ultimate decision will be yours.

My heart goes out to you, your husband and Winston. The decision is so hard but having said that, you will know when the time is right..and only you will know when that is. We took our 12 year old Lab with us on our 2 week vacation this summer..earlier in the summer, she had two operations to remove a cancerous growth on her leg and the second time the margins came back clean. At times on our trip, I worried about her as she seemed a bit tired but overall I think she had a great trip.. and was with her daughter and her human family. When we got home, she trotted around the house with a huge grin on her face, She was happy to be home. Five days later she was dead. Apparently, she had a tumor attached to her heart which burst. Our vet tried to save her and did on a Sunday night, but the bleeding resumed and she died a few hours later at home with us at her side. Two hours before she died(an hour before our vet appt early in the morning) she died. My husband and I both knew then (two hours before her death) that we would have to put her down. But until that Sunday night, she was happy, eating, and hiking. Her quality of life was important to us... which, we think she had, had up until the last few hours of her life. Had I known what was going to happen after the vet saved her, we might not have taken her home. But at least she was with us..Good luck with your decision. I think you will know when the time is right for Winston. My thoughts are with you.

We saw the Vet this morning and explained our dilemma. We will decrease Winston's meds, completely eliminating the Prednisone. He is on a very tiny dosage now. This will let us know if he still has underlying problems that are there and on the verge of becoming disastrous. These are my words, not the Vet's but it is how I interrupted it. She reiterated that his disease is progressive, just how fast she can't say. Also, she noticed his eyes were not good. Of course, the whole time Winston was thrilled that she had an endless supply of snacks. His nose is still very good! On the downside for Winston she felt he needs to lose weight (he has been eating whatever and whenever since we became aware that his days may be limited)No more Sunday morning pancakes.
Now we will just wait and see how does this next week. We will adjust our schedule if we have to.
I am feeling optimistic. Thanks for all the new posts and PMs.I will let all of you know how he does.

Winston sure has a loving family looking after him.
There is no easy answer for what you are going through. Many folks here have struggled with this. You are not alone.
Please take care. And hugs to Winston tonight from Florida.

Good luck with Winston. Boy he sure has a loving family. All you can do is your best and work with your vet and see how things go. No matter what Winston knows you love him. Take care. Hugs

It is a very hard decision and once done can't be reversed if you carry doubt. Over the years we've lost many special furbabies; a few left us suddenly, while the others we were given the gift of opportunity to savor each remaining day. The only thing I can add that hasn't been said is when that time comes you'll know. Your heart will break while it agrees with your head and you'll know without any doubt it is time.
Since losing a furbaby quickly to an immune disorder it is a real roller coaster ride of a disease. God bless you and Winston.
