...Well thank you And Nah it's not odd at all. 99% of my time is spent away from my computer doing things that people my age do. School, drumming, hanging out with friends, etc. I don't just sit around all the time reading RV forums. In fact, I spend very little time on here. I just happened to come across this topic last night. The reason I like to browse around here is because I enjoy RVing just as much as anyone, just because I'm 18 doesn't mean I can't enjoy that. That is the reason I like to browse around these forums with a bunch of people way out of my age range Anyway, I suppose it's ultimately the OP's decision. Whatever is decided is what's right for them.

A nice well-thought-out answer, Tyler.

The minimum age for myspace according to their rules is 14, so the 11 y.o. broke the rules for the website by signing up.

I wouldn't trust a 11 y.o. online without me watching constantly. We have set set list of websites the younger two are allowed to visit and keep an eye on her.

I don't look forward to the day that my son figures out what out there on the internet. I couldn't imagine going through teenage boy hormones with the internet available. I sure wouldn't have been able to resist going and looking where I shouldn't.

We live by principles rather than rules. So rather than having kids sneaking behind my back doing something I said no to, I don't say no randomly. My job as parent is to help my kids get what they want, in a safe way.

Both kids have had unlimited internet access for years with no parental controls or net nanny. They started with Neopets accounts way back when. Daughter has flicker and stickam accounts, son had a WOW account. Neither have MySpace or Facebook, their choice. Neither are interested at this time. If they were I'd help them set it up.

There are dangers on the net, but there are dangers in the neighborhood as well. So we talk about why it's not a good idea to give out any personal info, location, school, etc. It is possible for kids to navigate the net safely and without restrictions. My kids know my goal is to help them get what they need and want in life, so they easily accept an answer of no when I have to say no; they know I have a good reason for it and are more willing to listen to the reason.

Pat, no apology necessary. My comments weren't intended as a correction but more of an explanation as to why. Believe me, if it weren't for my own son being so similar, I probably would have questioned it too!

Any kid, mine, yours, or anyone elses can easily set up a hotmail email account and password from school or the local public library without their parents knowledge.....

If I were a sneaky teen, which I was, my mother would have only been given ONE email account and password info (the internet was not even an option when I was growing up}

Just glad my daughter has no interest YET!

I'd leave them alone with it and just make it clear that you have access to their account to monitor it. Just one small step in allowing you to gain trust in them and their decision making. Stopping them from using it will only convince them to do a better job of hiding things from you in the future.

Yeah, no kidding...Hotmail, Yahoo, gmail, etc. This isn't new...I remember high school, I saw the clandestine PO boxes, I heard the carefully-worded conversations. I watched teens spend hours to carefully encode notes that parents could see & be none the wiser it was plans for a kegger. Heck, I made $100 teaching a couple of classmates a cipher...I just didn't bother to tell them they could have found it in the library. (Like I did.)

Heck, I watched my girlfriend (now my wife) spend hours pushing another girl, getting her to climb cargo nets, ropes, & trees to overcome a near-paralysing fear of heights. (There was a trellis outside her bedroom window...she DID make the prom.)

This high tech world makes parenting harder than ever. There is a fine line between being safe and smothering. I hope I can find that happy medium.

Thanks everyone for you thoughts. I have learned from all of you and all of your opinions are valuable to me.

Camp on my friends..........
