It's just something the phone companies pushed on the more sheep-like kids to make more money, then adults wanting to appear youthful picked up on it. And,of course, the people who like to be sneaky and use the phone where they shouldn't.
I accidentally opened a text message once, had to pay extra for it, and since then have refused to open any more. No idea how to send one, nor would I even if I knew how. If someone doesn't have the courtesy to speak to me, I see no reason to be charged to get their stupid text message.
It's a phone, fer chrissakes! It has no need for texting ability, music, games, or any other silliness. And it certainly doesn't need to be used in a vehicle while the user is driving!
I'm no kid and I use texting quite often. I stay in touch with my nephews and the wife and I text during the day. All texting is is e-mail with a cell phone. You would think Wal-Mart invented it to listen to some people on here. Why are you even on a computer "texting" to everybody on rv.net if you don't believe in texting?

Texting is stupid but e-mail is not stupid? But texting is simply e-mailing, just done on a cell phone. I can't see how one can be stupid and the other great.
Correct me if I am wrong(I have never TEXTED in my life) .. but texting is normally done with two people and they MOST TIMES immediately respond.
Emails are mostly done where an IMMEDIATE response is not done most times.
THAT'S the diff.

I would not agree to that statement. I send a text knowing that they will get back to me when they get a chance.
If I send a coworker an email and know they are at work, I expect one back quickly. Our email system is set to check every 2 minutes.

That's because texting is faster than e-mail and it goes to the phone that's on your hip and you get alerted that a message is there. Otherwise, it's simply e-mail with a phone. You can reply instantly back and forth with e-mail too if both parties are sitting at a computer. I do it all the time at the office if I don't feel like walking up to another floor.

"Why are you even on a computer "texting" to everybody on rv.net if you don't believe in texting?"
Because I don't have everyone's telephone numbers.
Why do many people still have calculators on their desks if they have a cell phone? Why have a stereo if your phone plays MP3? Why even have a TV? Or a game system? Or a PC? Because a phone is still a phone. It may be able to do most of those tasks, but not nearly as well as a dedicated device. A call is still quicker and easier than a text, and more personal and accurate. I still will send Christmas and birthday cards, not just ecards.
And back to the original topic of the thread, there is absolutely no excuse for texting while driving. At least 99 and 44/100% of the texts to and from drivers are not important enough not to wait until the vehicle is parked, and the rest that are important should be sent from a stationary vehicle that is off the roadway - for safety of the driver and everyone else in the vicinity and to allow the texter to concentrate on the message that is so terribly important. I often see some proctocephalic pull out of a parking lot, then whip out the cell phone to start texting while driving. If the message must be sent at that very moment, why not send it before starting to drive?
