Good question! Why not spend your money in this country and help our economy to recover.
I can empathise but really your on the wrong forum my friend. This one is for international travellers.
It's a legitimate complaint. I won't be spending any dollars in Mexico for the forseeable future, because I now have my place in Guatemala where that problem doesn't exist.

Why punish ourselves? If we love going to Mexico, to quit going would be that old cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face kind of thing. In five years of spending at least half a year there at a time, we have only been hit once for mordida, and we just refused to pay. When we became aggressive about it, they backed right off. What can they do? Report you for refusing to pay a bribe? No way. They were afraid of being reported for asking.
As for helping our economy.. . Just because we spend time in Mexico doesn't preclude us from traveling in the US as well. It doesn't have to be an either/or choice. Sure, there's lots to see here. There's lots to see there, too. It is also a nice change of pace. Some of us just want to live in a bigger box than others.

I know this may get deleted, but there is one thing I have never understood. We all live on the same continent. We are all Americans. Yet we spend more money chasing down criminals in other countries that could give a rat's behind about us than protecting our borders here on the continent. Imagine if we had spent 800 billion dollars plus on the Americas what we could have accomplished; education, commerce, eliminating poverty, reducing or eliminating the need for illegal immigration.
I'll never get these comments of spending money at home when rving outside the U.S. is a drop in the bucket compared to all the waste outside the Americas on people we can never change or convince otherwise. We have all the oil and natural resources from the top of Canada to the tip of Chile and we don't take advantage of it. JMHO

Glad to hear you are out there travelling. We will possibly be checking out Guatemala this year but only on a "walk across" visit. Any suggestions for a crossing point would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me so as not to hijack this thread.

When in Mexico you're playing they're game with their rules. I'll just stay in the U.S.

You're right. Why would it be any other way?
Going on 23 years in Mexico. Came here with little less than 2000 dollars. Finished my studies here, started a school, bought a house, made friends and family, pay my taxes, follow the rules, and help others. What else could anyone ask for. Have never had a problem of any kind.
There are over 200 countries in the world one is not necessarily better than the other. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. My godson has lived in Germany for 20 years, a niece in South Africa and Bangladesh, a brother in Puerto Rico. They say they wouldn't trade their new countries for anything in the world. To each his own.
The system works here. It's different but works just fine. Here you have to work hard, there are no handouts.

My question is this: for all of those people who say they wouldn't, for whatever reason, go to Mexico, why are they monitoring/posting on a forum that is dedicated to travelling in Mexico.
