Finding a route through Navojoa to avoid the traffic tickets isn't a big problem. The Periferico to the West side of town is closed (or was when we passed by it) so that's not an option. The way to go is:
1. Go past the Periferico turnoff and go over the big bridge.
2. Get in the LEFT lane.
3. Watch for a Best Western Hotel on the right side of the road.
4. At the Best Western you should see a sign indicating "Trafico Pesado Y Autobus" (Through traffic and buses) turn left. It is a fairly small white sign with black lettering and is not that visible but if you watch for it I'm sure you will see it.
5. Make the left turn and you don't need to turn off this road again till you come back to the Hwy. It's narrow but driveable! Just keep going straight on it. It curves south right away and then runs parallel to the main Hwy. You'll know you are on the correct road by the gazillion trucks coming toward you.
6. After a few KMs you cross a small RR crossing and you are at an S curve in the road and will come to an intersection with a Stop sign. Lots of traffic from the left and right, but you have to cross and go straight ahead.
7. Continue straight ahead till you get to a big curve to the right and it takes you right to the main Hwy. Watch for more signs saying Los Mochis to the left and Trafico Pesado to the left.
Turn left and you are back on the main Hwy.

Last winter we took the Periferico south and what a fiasco! When we headed north we went through town. No problem. There were other trucks and buses and I saw no signs that trucks or buses were prohibited. Smooth sailing and we even stopped at a Pemex in town. We would have drawn attention, two forty foot rigs with toads.
Did I miss the signs?

I plan on using Navajoa as a stop over, is the RV park in the Best Western still open?

That first bypass is a real pig! We did it once each way many years ago then never again. We now use the more sensible bypass route as described by the OP. We prefer this to going through town as there are no traffic lights until halfway through the city. There is almost always a policeman at the stop sigh mentioned, He will stop traffic it is difficult to get across.

A note that may clear up the use of the "west" or "south" bypass-- "Trafico Pesado" is Heavy Traffic. "Trafico Pasado" (with an a) is "Through Traffic" We noted on the way down that the sign indicated "Trafico Pesado de Cargo y Autobuses Los Mochis" This indicates to me that that bypass is for commercial vehicles going to Los Mochis. I bet the truckers were glad to see it closed! Guess the storm did some damage.

We have taken the western Periferico several Times over the Last 11 Years. It has always been a rough road , but does get You around the City. My guess is that a proper Bypass is going to be constructed along that route, likely a Toll road. It definitely needs to be Re Built and I'm sure there were several Washouts.

It looked pretty scary last winter. There's a nice park (50 amp, water that works, laundry) at the Universidad del Pacifico which is about 10 miles out of town towards Huatabampo. Unless it has changed its not well signed but it is on the east side of the campus, in conjunction with the new orphanage building. Take along some bedding or clothing for the kids and it will be appreciated.

Orphanage construction

The links don't work well but you can edit the browser address to get back to the home page. As far as I know they are still taking RVs.

As far as we know there is only one RV park in Navojoa and it is the pits. Don't know about one at the Best Western. The one we know is called Alameda. It is at the north end of town. There is construction equipment all over the place in various stages of disassembly. They do not maintain the old RV park but will let you park for about $10 as I recall. Only a few sites have power or water. These sites were built before large RVs so they will not accomodate larger rigs. They parked us in one of the interior park streets alongside a site. We could get 15 amp. Trees are overgrowing most site. Very tight. Pack of dogs roam the park but they seem harmless though noisy at times. There is a large Pemex a mile or so north that is a better option. Or take a little side trip to Alamos.

Last winter that bypass almost ate my toad!
I intend on driving right through town again unless the easterly bypass sign is visible.
I heard the same thing about how bad of condition the RV park was there
I will probably stay overnight at the Pemex that is right on the turn off for the bypass.
thanks for the info!
